The article considers the earth dam of the run-of-river unit – Kuibyshev hydroelectric power station on the Volga river (Russia). The main parameters of the earth dam, peculiarities of its erection and operation are described. The article notes the importance of ensuring a high degree of reliability of water structures constructed near major cities. It is especially important to monitor the condition of retaining structures with long service life. The factors influencing the change of the initial design conditions of operation of the Kuibyshev run-of-river unit dam are discussed. The results of examination of the geometric parameters of the body of the dam, performed at different periods of its maintenance, are analyzed. Examination results revealed significant deviations of the elevation marks of the earth dam surface on the upstream side from the design values. Possible causes of the discrepancy between these parameters and the design solutions are considered. The conclusion is drawn that the most likely reason for these features of the dam design lies in the initial incompleteness of construction. The measures for carrying out repair work to improve the reliability of the earth dam are being recommended. 1 Introduction At present, ensuring reliable operation of retaining water structures is a very urgent requirement for both operating enterprises and design organizations [1, 2].

Thus, the aim of this study was to propose a method to assess ecological drawdowns from power station reservoirs. An example of its application for the Volga River downstream area is presented. The efficiency of the quantitative assessment of ecological water discharge from the reservoir of the Volgograd hydroelectric power station is analyzed and discussed in relation to the improvement of the environmental condition of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain, which covers an area of 6.1 × 103 km2. It is shown that a decrease of spring-summer flooding worsened significantly its environmental condition, i.e. biodiversity decreased by 2-3 times, soil fertility declined by 25%, floodplain relief deformation occurred and the productivity of semi-migratory fish decreased by more than 3 times.

  • The Soviet-German Tank Academy at Kama
The Secret School of War: The Soviet-German Tank Academy at Kama THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Ian Johnson Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2012 Master's Examination Committee: Jennifer Siegel, Advisor Peter Mansoor David Hoffmann Copyright by Ian Ona Johnson 2012 Abstract This paper explores the period of military cooperation between the Weimar Period German Army (the Reichswehr), and the Soviet Union. Between 1922 and 1933, four facilities were built in Russia by the two governments, where a variety of training and technological exercises were conducted. These facilities were particularly focused on advances in chemical and biological weapons, airplanes and tanks. The most influential of the four facilities was the tank testing and training grounds (Panzertruppenschule in the German) built along the Kama River, near Kazan in North- Central Russia. Led by German instructors, the school’s curriculum was based around lectures, war games, and technological testing. Soviet and German students studied and worked side by side; German officers in fact often wore the Soviet uniform while at the school, to show solidarity with their fellow officers. Among the German alumni of the school were many of the most famous practitioners of mobile warfare during the Second World War, such as Guderian, Manstein, Kleist and Model. This system of education proved highly innovative. During seven years of operation, the school produced a number of extremely important technological and tactical innovations. Among the new technologies were a new tank chassis system, superior guns, and - perhaps most importantly- a radio that could function within a tank.

THE REPUBLIC OF NOVGOROD (‘ LORD NOVGOROD THE GREAT," Gospodin Velikii Novgorod, as it once called itself, is the starting-point of Russian history. It is also without a rival among the Russian city-states of the Middle Ages. Kiev and Moscow are greater in political importance, especially in the earliest and latest mediaeval times-before the Second Crusade and after the fall of Constantinople-but no Russian town of any age has the same individuality and self-sufficiency, the same sturdy republican independence, activity, and success. Who can stand against God and the Great Novgorod ?-Kto protiv Boga i Velikago Novgoroda .J-was the famous proverbial expression of this self-sufficiency and success. From the beginning of the Crusading Age to the fall of the Byzantine Empire Novgorod is unique among Russian cities, not only for its population, its commerce, and its citizen army (assuring it almost complete freedom from external domination even in the Mongol Age), but also as controlling an empire, or sphere of influence, extending over the far North from Lapland to the Urals and the Ob.

  • Cartographic-Geoinformational Estimation of Spatio-Temporal Erosion Dynamics of Arable Soils in Forest-Steppe Landscapes of the Russian Plain
332 Erosion and Sediment Yields in the Changing Environment (Proceedings of a symposium held at the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, CAS-Chengdu, China, 11–15 October 2012) (IAHS Publ. 356, 2012). Cartographic-geoinformational estimation of spatio-temporal erosion dynamics of arable soils in forest-steppe landscapes of the Russian Plain OLEG YERMOLAEV & ALINA AVVAKUMOVA Department of Landscape Ecology, Institute of Ecology and Geography of Kazan Federal University, 18 Kremlyovskaya, 420008 Kazan, Russia [email protected] Abstract The intensity of soil erosion in the forest-steppe landscapes of the Russian Plain was assessed using a cartographic method and GIS. The aim of the research was to devise a method for analysing the spatio-temporal dynamics of soil erosion intensity under conditions of high agricultural production. The intensity of anthropogenic erosion was assessed for the period from 1970 to 2007. These years cover the period of highest intensity of agricultural land use (USSR) and the subsequent period of agricultural loading reduction experienced during the transitional economy of Russia during the 1990s. Spatio-temporal analysis of soil erosion was conducted by the creation of vector thematic erosion maps, generated using the “overlay” cartographic approach. The change in soil erosion contours was estimated for each key soil type. Key words soil erosion; GIS; thematic maps; dynamics; river basins INTRODUCTION The forest-steppe landscapes on the east of the Russian Plain possess favourable agro-climatic resources. In particular, the local soils (chernozems) are fertile and have therefore been used to help support intensive agricultural production. About 70–80% of the local total river basin area is occupied by cropped land.

326 Sediment Dynamics from the Summit to the Sea (Proceedings of a symposium held in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, 11–14 December 2014) (IAHS Publ. 367, 2014). Suspended sediment yield mapping of Northern Eurasia K.A. MALTSEV, O.P. YERMOLAEV & V.V. MOZZHERIN Kazan Federal University, Department of the Landscape Ecology, Institute of Ecology and Geography, 18 Kremlevskay St, Kazan, Russia, 420008 Kazan, Russia [email protected] Abstract The mapping of river sediment yields at continental or global scale involves a number of technical difficulties that have largely been ignored. The maps need to show the large zonal peculiarities of river sediment yields, as well as the level (smoothed) local anomalies. This study was carried out to create a map of river sediment yields for Northern Eurasia (within the boundaries of the former Soviet Union, 22 × 106 km2) at a scale of 1:1 500 000. The data for preparing the map were taken from the long-term observations recorded at more than 1000 hydrological stations. The data have mostly been collected during the 20th century by applying a single method. The creation of this map from the study of river sediment yield is a major step towards enhancing international research on understanding the mechanical denudation of land due mainly to erosion. Key words suspended sediment yield; GIS; thematic map; watershed boundaries; Northern Eurasia INTRODUCTION The mapping of river suspended sediment yield is the most significant challenge for the experts working in the fields of hydrology and geomorphology. This challenge can be attributed mainly to the sparse network of hydrological stations that systematically observe sediment yield.

This leads to the formation of new shorelines, which are highly dynamic regarding erosion and deposition processes. The present work aims to assess the direct human action along the largest reservoir in Europe—Kuibyshev (Russian Federation) and to analyse threatened cultural heritage sites from the coastal area, with the help of historical maps, UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), and topographic surveys. This approach is a necessity, due to the oscillating water level, local change of climate, and to the continuous increasing of natural hazards (in this case coastal erosion) all over the world. Many studies are approaching coastal areas of the seas and oceans, yet there are fewer studies regarding the inland coastal areas of large artificial reservoirs. Out of the total number of 1289 cultural heritage sites around the Kuibyshev reservoir, only 90 sites are not affected by the dam building; the rest had completely disappeared under the reservoir’s water.

ABSTRACT This paper is concerned with the shallows of water reservoirs, which are located between the shore line and the deep water area. The intermediate loca tion of these shallows is the reason that their for mation, especially at large amplitude of water level oscillations, is a very complex process. At the same time the role of these shallows is subject to con siderable discussion in the relevant literature. Comprehensive investigations of water quality at present include not only the technological aspects of pollution control (waste treatment, water purifica tion, etc.), but also the relevant ecological problems which in turn are closely related to social problems and to the conditions of human life. This paper describes the role of reservoir shallows, taking into consideration the entire spec trum of the aqove mentioned aspects. Special stress is given to the filtering role of shallows; they act as natural filter~ protecting water in the reservoir against the nonpoint source pollutants of agricultural origin which are difficult to control. The degree to which the reservoir shallows can act as the "natural filters" depends on their structure, which in turn depends on the regime of water level oscillations in the reservoir.
