Progress “Republicans have formed a total wall of opposi- tion against progress on voting rights,” Schumer said just after 4:30 a.m. “That’s what we have come to: total Republican intransigence.” His remarks came after a marathon voting session that paved the way for Democrats’ big-ticket spend- ing goals before the Senate adjourned for its August recess. “After ramming through this reckless taxing and spending spree, here in the dead of night, they also want to start tearing up the ground rules of our de- mocracy,” McConnell said, “writing new ones, of course, on a purely partisan basis.” Democratic leaders have said the voting legislation would serve as a powerful counterbalance to a wave of new restrictive voting laws approved in Republi- can-controlled states after the 2020 election. But the effort stalled in the Senate months ago. Liberal activists have advocated for the elimination of the fi libuster, though a handful of moderate Demo- crats, including Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, have rejected such an approach, denying Democrats the votes needed to make the change. That’s where the early Wednesday push to take up the legislation came. “These are important points to build a case that Re- publicans are going to fi libuster everything and are bad-faith actors on this topic,” said Adam Bozzi, a longtime Senate aide who is now helping lead a $30 million campaign to build support for the bill. President Joe Biden has faced increasing pressure from the party’s base to get more involved in the fi ght over voting legislation. Many activists say Biden has only paid lip service to the issue, instead prioritizing a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package, which the Senate approved Tuesday. With that done, they hope he will be more engaged on the issue. “The White House must now prioritize voting rights legislation with the same level of urgen- cy and commitment as the bipartisan infrastructure bill,” NAACP President Derrick Johnson said. “Time is running out.” ARAB TIMES, THURSDAY, AUGUST 12, 2021 INTERNATIONAL 7

WASHINGTON, Aug 11, (AP): President Joe Biden’s ad- ministration is moving at home and abroad to try to address concerns about rising energy prices slowing the nation’s re- covery from the pandemic-induced recession. National security adviser Jake Sullivan on Wednesday called on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to move faster to restore global supply of petro- leum to pre-pandemic levels, and the White House asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate the domestic gasoline market for any anti-competitive behavior that could be increasing prices. The joint actions come as the administration is increas- ingly sensitive to rising prices across the economy as it faces both political and policy pressure from inflation. “Higher gasoline costs, if left unchecked, risk harming the ongoing global recovery,” Sullivan said in a statement. He said the administration was pressuring OPEC and producers allied with the cartel to more quickly undo the production cuts put in place at the start of the pandemic. Biden’s National Economic Council director, Brian Deese, asked the FTC head, Lina Khan, to “monitor the U.S. gasoline market and address any illegal conduct that might be contributing to price increases for consumers at the pump.” The FTC is an independent agency and may take advice, but not direction, from the White House. Wednesday’s report from the Labor Department showed that consumer prices jumped 0.5% from June to July, down from the previous monthly increase of 0.9%. They have increased a substantial 5.4% compared with a year earlier, erasing much of the benefit to workers from higher pay. CHICAGO, Aug 11, (AP): Boeing easily beat rival Airbus in orders for new planes last month, but Chicago-based Boeing trailed its European rival in delivering planes to airline customers. Boeing said Tuesday that it took orders for 31 planes in July while 17 others were canceled, resulting in a net gain of 14. That compared with two orders for Airbus. It was Boeing’s sixth straight month of positive net or- ders after seeing cancellations exceed orders for most of 2020. Boeing has reported 270 net orders so far in 2021. Brazil’s Gol ordered nine 737 Max jets last month and Dallas-based Southwest Airlines ordered six. Boeing delivered 28 planes in July, including nine 737 Max jets sent to Irish airline Ryanair. That fell short of Airbus, which delivered 47 planes last month. For the year, Boeing has delivered 184 planes - more than all of 2020 - despite another halt in shipping its 787 jet because of production fl aws in the fuselage and nose. Last month, the company said it will cut production of 787s. Deliveries are critical for aircraft companies because buyers usually pay much of the purchase price when they get the plane. Fighting drug shortages Groups make own cheaper medicines NEW YORK, Aug 11, (AP): Impatient with years of inaction in Washington on prescription drug costs, US hospital groups, startups and nonprofi ts have started making their own medi- cines in a bid to combat stubbornly high prices and persistent shortages of drugs with little competition. The efforts are at varying stages, but some have already made and shipped millions of doses. Nearly half of US hospi- tals have gotten some drugs from the projects and more medi- cines should be in retail pharmacies within the next year as the work accelerates. Most groups are working on generics, while at least one is trying to develop brand-name drugs. All aim to sell their drugs at prices well below what competitors charge. “These companies are addressing different parts of the prob- lem and trying to come up with novel solutions” to produce cheaper medicines, said Stacie Dusetzi- na, a Vanderbilt University health pol- icy professor. “People should be able to access the drugs that work for them without going broke.” While some of the projects are solv- ing supply problems and reducing med- ication costs for hospitals, drug price experts are split on how much consum- ers will benefi t. Dusetzina said the efforts could bring needed price competition, at least Kesselheim for some drugs. Hall & Oates to hit stage Nicks cancels all 2021 gigs over coronavirus

LOS ANGELES, Aug 11, (AP): Stevie Nicks has canceled fi ve forthcoming performances at music festivals, citing coronavirus concerns, she said in a statement Tuesday. Nicks had been scheduled to headline one day each of BottleRock Napa Valley in California and the Jazz Aspen Festival in Colorado in September. In Octo- ber, she was to have played two days of the Austin City Limits Music Festival and one day of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The dates were all the shows she had planned for 2021. “These are challenging times with challenging decisions that have to be made. I want everyone to be safe and healthy and the rising Covid cases should be of concern to all of us,” the 73-year-old singer said in the statement. “While I’m vac- cinated, at my age, I am still being extremely cautious and for that reason have decided to skip the 5 performances I had planned for 2021.” Most of the festivals them- selves are moving forward Nicks with replacement headliners. Country star Chris Stapleton will take Nicks’ place at BottleRock. “Because singing and performing have been my whole life, my primary goal is to keep healthy so I can continue singing for the next decade or longer,” Inductee Stevie Nicks performs at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on March 29, 2019, in New York. Nicks canceled appearances at fi ve music Nicks’ statement said. “I’m devastated and I know festivals where she had planned performances, citing coronavirus concerns.
