Grandmama had her doctorate in Special Education. She suffered from Manic Depression, but did some of her best work when she was manic. She actually wrote a bill, which passed, allowing children with learning disabilities to receive the same education as any other child. She developed the Special Education Program at Troy State University. She was an amazing, caring, and loving lady. She had no enemies, and anyone who met her, loved her. She accepted everyone, regardless of color, gender, or social status. She was definitely a southern lady. She enrolled me in etiquette school when I was 13. Things like that were important to her. After retiring, she re-married and moved to McLean, VA. There, she taught Sunday School at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church In McLean. She volunteered at the Washington Cathedral for a while, and taught English to International students. She passed away May 8th, 1999 of a Glioblastoma brain tumor. One of the things that sticks out in my mind was what someone said about her at her memorial service. People were sharing stories about her, and this young man told a story about Grandmama always giving him sun catchers. He said that the thing that she didn't realize was that SHE was the sun catcher, always bringing cheer and happiness in other peoples lives. She and I were always close, and everyone says that I am more like her than anyone else. [4]

He met my grandmother...Fannie Florine Harrison...when he lived in Clarksburg, WV and they were married in 1919. They had an infant son, Richard Harrison Fleetwood, who died just a couple of weeks after he was born in 1925. My father, Edgar Allen Fleetwood Jr., was born in 1926 in Clarksburg and is the only child. Edgar Allen Sr. died in 1941 after he was hit by a taxi as he walking the family dog...he died about a month later. My dad was in boarding school at the time...Greenbrier Military Academy...and my grandmother was just devastated. [Nancy Fleetwood Miller]
