    Civil War Heritage Day Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands, New York Saturday, September 13, 2008 Tours, Music, Events: 10 am - 5 pm Reception and Parade for President Lincoln! 3:00 pm On February 18, 1861 , Jefferson Davis was sworn in as President of the Confederacy and a celebration was held to mark the establishment of the Confederate States of America. On February 18, 1861 , Abraham Lincoln had been elected President of the United States but had not yet reached Washington. On February 18, 1861 , Abraham Lincoln was in Albany , New York. Albany’s Mayor George Thacher met Lincoln at the train station, and they rode in a carriage to the Capitol. As the carriage proceeded down Broadway and turned right to go up State Street, it passed Stanwix Hall, the current residence of John Wilkes Booth. Undoubtedly, Booth watched with almost all of Albany as the new President went by. Another spectator was Clara Harris, daughter of Senator Ira Harris. Clara and her fiancé Major Henry Rathbone would be reunited with President and Mrs. Lincoln at a later encounter with Booth. On June 7, 1862, in the midst of the war, the Trustees of Albany Rural donated a section named the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Plot. One hundred and forty-nine Civil War Veterans were buried in this plot and at least 600 more were buried in family plots throughout the cemetery. The Grand Army of the Republic Civil War Monument at Albany Rural contains the names of 648 Albany City residents who “ Died in Action.” The bronze plates on the monument were cast from a melted down Civil War cannon.

    2017 Tour Guides CAROL BALDRIDGE Carol has been an archivist at both the American Philosophical Society and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. After leaving the archives and book world to raise her sons, Jake and Sam, she morphed into a 3rd grade teacher at Chestnut Hill Academy. Her interest in cemeteries started with trips to family graves with her mother and grandmother where stories were told for each person visited. With an abiding interest in Philadelphia history, Carol is adding Laurel Hill to her volunteer schedule. BILL BARKER Bill has enjoyed portraying Thomas Jefferson at Colonial Williamsburg since 1993. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Bill’s interest in Thomas Jefferson reaches back to his youth. He enjoys researching the American world Jefferson knew with an interest in the role the man played and continues to play in our American identity. Bill is a student of history and an actor. He is passion- ate about both and brings them together in a way that allows people to be transported back in time to feel, hear and taste what it would be like to mingle with Mr. Jefferson. Mahr, Apalachicola, Florida December 2013 ii ABSTRACT The Pierce site (8Fr14), near the mouth of the Apalachicola River in Franklin County, northwest Florida, was a major prehistoric mound center during the late Early and Middle Woodland (about A.D. 200-700) and Mississippian (about A.D. 1000-1500) periods. People lived there probably continuously during at least the last 2000 years (until right before the European invasion of Florida in the sixteenth century) and took advantage of the strategic location commanding the river and bay, as well as the abundant terrestrial and aquatic resources. Besides constructing several mounds for burial of the dead and probably support of important structures, native peoples left long midden (refuse) ridges of shells, animal bones, artifacts and blackened sandy soils, which built up a large and very significant archaeological site. Early Europeans and Americans who settled in the town of Apalachicola recognized the archaeological importance of Pierce and collected artifacts. But since the site and its spectacular findings were published by C.B. Moore in 1902, much information has been lost or misunderstood. Recent investigations by the University of South Florida were commissioned by the property owner to research and evaluate the significance of the site. There is evidence for an Early Woodland (Deptford) occupation and mound building, possibly as early as A.D. 200. Seven of the mounds form an oval, with the Middle Woodland burial mounds on the west side.
