La información que aquí figura se basa en los datos de que disponen los organismos del sistema de las Naciones Unidas y en los datos obtenidos del Gobierno de la República Árabe Siria y de otras fuentes pertinentes. Los datos facilitados por los organismos del sistema de las Naciones Unidas sobre sus entregas de suministros humanitarios corresponden a los meses de agosto y septiembre de 2019. II. Acontecimientos principales Aspectos destacados: agosto y septiembre de 2019 1. Pese al alto el fuego en Idlib anunciado por la Federación de Rusia y el Gobierno de la República Árabe Siria los días 2 y 30 de agosto, respectivamente, durante el período que abarca el informe se siguió informando de bajas civiles, incluidas las muertes confirmadas de civiles. -

Introduction and Methodology Since the popular uprising for freedom began in Syria in March 2011, SNHR has taken it upon itself to document the wide range of violations being perpetrated daily against the Syrian people, such as killing, enforced-disappearance, arbitrary arrest, destruction, indis- criminate bombardment, and torture, with SNHR shedding light on the most notable viola- tions it has recorded as being committed by the parties to the conflict in Syria in hundreds of reports. The Syrian regime, and its militias, were the only perpetrators of violations at the start of the popular uprising, and remain the main perpetrators to date, with the Syrian regime being re- sponsible for the majority of violations. Subsequently, other parties have emerged gradually such as the armed opposition, extremist Islamic groups, Democratic Union Party forces, international coalition forces, and Russian forces. The first two years of the popular uprising saw the largest proportion of massacres of an ethnic and sectarian nature, with the Syrian regime and its militias being responsible for the majority of these massacres. -

Queries or requests for any other use, or if a more substantial copy is required, should be directed to the owner of the Intellectual Property Rights. 2 Abstract The Latin principality of Antioch was founded during the First Crusade (1095-1099), and survived for 170 years until its destruction by the Mamluks in 1268. This thesis offers the first full assessment of the thirteenth century principality of Antioch since the publication of Claude Cahen’s La Syrie du nord à l’époque des croisades et la principauté franque d’Antioche in 1940. It examines the Latin principality from its devastation by Saladin in 1188 until the fall of Antioch eighty years later, with a particular focus on its relationship with the Armenian kingdom of Cilicia. This thesis shows how the fate of the two states was closely intertwined for much of this period. The failure of the principality to recover from the major territorial losses it suffered in 1188 can be partly explained by the threat posed by the Cilician Armenians in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. -

The majority of humanitarian assistance both in Syria and worldwide is provided as in-kind aid. However, over the past decade a transi- tion has occurred and cash-based approaches, including both conditional and unconditional cash-transfers and voucher programs, are becoming increasingly common. The cash-based response within Syria to date is small when compared to in-kind assistance and geographic coverage has been somewhat limited . In light of the significant challenges to providing assistance in Syria, there is a need to shift the program- ming focus towards sourcing assistance from within Syria rather than importing in-kind assistance; inter- ventions to support job creation, rehabilitation of industry and local markets; and empowering beneficiaries by responding to their feedback on which type of assistance is preferred . -

WEEKLY CONFLICT SUMMARY | 27 April - 3 May 2020 SYRIA SUMMARY • NORTHWEST| Hayyat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) faced protests after opening a controversial commercial crossing with Government of Syria (GoS). A fuel tanker explosion in Afrin killed 53 people. Infighting between Turkish- backed armed opposition groups escalated in Jarabulus, Aleppo Governorate. • SOUTH & CENTRAL | Clashes between As-Sweida and Dara’a militias continued. Attacks against GoS personnel and positions continued in Dara’a Governorate. Israel attacked pro-Iranian militias and GoS positions across southern Syria. ISIS killed several GoS armed forces personnel. • NORTHEAST | ISIS prisoners attempted to escape Ghoweran jail in Al- Hassakah Governorate. Violence against civilians continued across northeast Syria. Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) faced increased attacks from unidentified gunmen and Turkish armed forces. Page 1 of 6 WEEKLY CONFLICT SUMMARY | 27 April – 3 May 2020 NORTHWEST SYRIA1 After announcing plans to open a commercial crossing with GoS territory, protests erupted against HTS (see figure 2). Civilians protested the crossing over fears of normalization with GoS and of spreading COVID-19. On 30 April, Maaret al Naasan (Idlib Governorate) residents protested at the crossing and blocked commercial trucks attempting to cross into GoS areas. HTS violently dispersed the protests, killing one. Following the protests, HTS brought reinforcements to Maaret al Naasan. The same day, HTS announced that it had suspended the opening of the commercial crossing.2 On 1 May, protests continued against HTS across Idlib and Aleppo Governorates in 10 locations.3 Smaller protests were recorded in 2 May in Kafr Takharim and Ariha in Idlib Governorate. -
“I Lost My Dignity”: Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in the Syrian Arab Republic
A/HRC/37/CRP.3 Distr.: Restricted 8 March 2018 English and Arabic only Human Rights Council Thirty-seventh session 26 February – 23 March 2018 Agenda item 4 Human rights situations that require the Council’s attention. “I lost my dignity”: Sexual and gender-based violence in the Syrian Arab Republic Conference room paper of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic Summary Sexual and gender-based violence against women, girls, men, and boys has been a persistent issue in Syria since the uprising in 2011. Parties to the conflict resort to sexual violence as a tool to instil fear, humiliate and punish or, in the case of terrorist groups, as part of their enforced social order. While the immense suffering induced by these practices impacts Syrians from all backgrounds, women and girls have been disproportionally affected, victimised on multiple grounds, irrespective of perpetrator or geographical area. Government forces and associated militias have perpetrated rape and sexual abuse of women and girls and occasionally men during ground operations, house raids to arrest protestors and perceived opposition supporters, and at checkpoints. In detention, women and girls were subjected to invasive and humiliating searches and raped, sometimes gang- raped, while male detainees were most commonly raped with objects and sometimes subjected to genital mutilation. Rape of women and girls was documented in 20 Government political and military intelligence branches, and rape of men and boys was documented in 15 branches. Sexual violence against females and males is used to force confessions, to extract information, as punishment, as well as to terrorise opposition communities.
