Attractions for young people in Hull:

One of the many amazing attractions for young people in Hull is Lazer Quest. Lazer Quest is the game hide and seek with a high-tech twist. However, this fabulous day out is only recommended for children aged seven and over. Another fantastic attraction is Big Fun - a large indoor play area with four monster slides and five very safe trampolines. This brilliant indoor play area also includes a smaller play area for children aged four and under. An attraction we would highly recommend for children who like to be with their friends is Hollywood Bowl. This is an extremely modern and up to date bowling area which also includes an arcade.

Hull’s main attractions:

The Deep - the world’s only submarium - is the perfect day out for the whole family. It holds a whopping 3,500 fish including Europe’s only pair of green sawfish. With opening times of 10am till 6pm, you have all the time in the world to explore this wonderful aquarium. is the perfect place to shop, eat and visit the Vue cinema.

Malet Lambert Summer School 2013 Magazine 05 YOUR HULL By Zarra Farrer

Hello and welcome to our magazine, about Hull. Here you will learn about the fantastic attractions for young children and older people.

Attractions for young people

The amazing East Park is a great place to visit. Here there are numerous things to do such as riding the splash boat, seeing the animal collection of snakes, tarantulas, millipedes, beetles and many more things. At Pearson Park there is a brilliant terrarium and a pond.

Main attractions in Hull

The Deep is the world’s only subarium. The different types of fish include clownfish, sharks and many more. There is also a Hull fair that is one of the largest travelling fairs in Europe. The fair is one of Hull's biggest traditions, as well as one of its oldest, having reached its 700th anniversary in 1993. Carrying on with such tradition, the fair is opened by the Lord Mayor of Hull on the first evening, normally at 5 pm. It first opened from 9th to 23rd March 1278.

My tips for visiting Hull

Visiting the brilliant city of Hull is the best feeling ever, so I hope you enjoy Hull as much as I do!

WHAT IS HULL? By Holly Davidson & Bethany Jefferson

We think Hull is better now than it ever has been. Hull has lots of new places including clothes and shoe shops. All the schools look wonderful with all the new play areas and things to sit on.

Hull fair is brilliant and fantastic for young children and adults as well. Adult rides are extremely scary, however on some rides children can go on them with parents. For small children the rides are really fun and they aren’t scary. Also at Hull fair you can buy food, drinks and play games like hook a duck!

In Hull, the Toy Shop is a great place for children to go because there are lots of great toys. However, it may be expensive and you may only be allowed toys as a treat.

Swimming is good for you because it keeps you fit and keeps children healthy and happy. At some of the swimming pools in Hull such as Woodford, there are slides that are great fun for children. The Woodford leisure Centre is an amazing place for children.

The cinema is good for a day out and there are films for everyone. Furthermore the films that are out now are: The Smurfs 2, Despicable Me 2, Monsters University, Grown Ups 2 and a lot more. These films are outstanding! Bowling is also good for a day out! Therefore, we would recommend going there - although we don’t go often.

The Deep

The Deep is one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world and is home to a whopping 3,500 fish. The Deep also has Europe’s only pair of green sawfish, spectacular sharks and rays. The Deep is a 5 minute walk from and is close to the City Centre. If you want a fun day out then The Deep is definitely the place to go! At the Deep you can see the amazing story of the world’s oceans through stunning marine life and fun, interactive presentations. The Deep is an environmental and conservation charity dedicated to increasing the knowledge and understanding of the world’s oceans.

Hull Fair

This carnival of merriment is the largest travelling funfair in Europe and one of the oldest. Local tradition states that the changing of the calendar in 1751 led the locals to believe the loss of eleven days affected their fair. “Give us back our eleven days,” was the cry as an enraged mob charged around the streets of Hull, calling for the return of their eleven day festivities which they believed to have been lost due to the calendar change. The outraged masses got their wish and from that year onwards 11th October, or the Friday nearest to it, became the official date for Hull Fair.

KC Stadium

The KC Stadium, or KC, is a multi-purpose stadium that cost approximately £44 million to build! It’s called the KC as Kingston Communications sponsor the stadium name. The stadium is currently used by Hull City football club and Hull FC the rugby league side. The KC stadium has a current capacity of 25,586! Musical acts have also performed here such as The Who and Elton John. It has also played host to large sporting events such as international rugby matches and two exhibition Twenty20 cricket matches between CCC and a Lashings World XI.

Some students may have questions buzzing all around their minds; What do I do? Will they like me? Will I get bullied? What if I get lost? Well this article is here to explain what high school is like and to answer a few of your queries. There are also a few handy and helpful tips.

I suppose some students wonder ‘well what makes high school different from junior school?’ To start off with, students have a lot more independence, although some students don’t use this independence properly therefore they get punished. However, they get a reasonable punishment I can assure you! You also have lots of varied lessons (on different subjects of course). Furthermore, students meet a lot of different teachers; this helps students to socialize with different people and allows them to know how they should act towards new people.

Here are 10 amazing, brilliant and fantastic tips to help you through high school:

1. You need to socialize and make friends, it’s a skill of life and you won’t feel so intimidated by other people. 2. Get help straight away if you’re being bullied mentally or physically, even if they have just called you a name, TELL SOMEONE! 3. Do your homework – You don’t want detentions! 4. Study - Good grades, good life! 5. Try to stay focused in lessons; your grades depend on it! 6. Try to be on time, again you don’t want a detention and you may miss something important! 7. Keep your grades up! 8. Keep organized - tidy things, tidy mind! 9. Keep your planner updated, you don’t want to forget anything important! 10. Show your school spirit - life is what you make of it!

Those are the top 10 most helpful and handy tips to high school!

High school can be worrying I know; but you only get one shot at it, so make it count! Think positive thoughts as it’s really not as bad as you think! Believe in yourself, anything can happen.

Malet Lambert Summer School 2013 Magazine 09 HIGH SCHOOL By Kiana Tait

Moving up to High School can be a very scary thing, therefore read this article to feel better about school. As you move up you will notice a few differences.

Fantastic Differences

Malet Lambert High School, which is bigger than junior school, is a school for 11-16 year olds. There are a lot more people in high school, however you might not talk with all of them. You will have different classes, more subjects and more choice.

Fears

As you move up you may have some personal feelings about it such as: being scared, excited, nervous or you may even feel a little bit sad about leaving your old school. Although you feel that way, some people might be feeling a lot more grown up or even feeling the same as you. Remember, the teachers are there to help you and make you feel a lot happier.

Preparing

To prepare for moving up to high school you could visit the school for a tour, meet the teachers and communicate. Furthermore, you might want to join clubs to make friends. You may want to ask pupils who already go to the school for more information. You should get ready by buying the right things.

10 Malet Lambert Summer School 2013 Magazine OPPORTUNITIES By Danielle Acey, Jessica Acey & Alisha Ellerington

The first day:

You may feel excited or nervous but you need to remember you’re not the only person whose first day it is. If there is a whole group of people staring at you don’t think negatively of this...try talking to them to make new friends. On your first day you may know very little but after a few days you will get to know your way around the school.

Changes at High school:

At primary school you probably only have one teacher that teaches you except maybe for sport and music. At high school you will have a lot of new teachers and classrooms to go to. Also, you will always have to be prepared for every lesson and be there on time!

New stresses:

Although going to high school can be exciting and fantastic you will feel a little stressed sometimes in the day. Here is a list of when you may feel stressed:

If you're lost and confused That you may not be with your old friends Lonely and unhappy Anxious and afraid Worried that you will not fit Tired and worn out from everything you’ve been doing

How to cope:

Stay in contact with your old school friends and don’t try and show off in front of people.

12 Malet Lambert Summer School 2013 Magazine ANIMATOR ction By Zane Greaves and William Longton Se 3 This guide will tell you step by step about how animation works. Step one: First there is pre-production, this means you get a storyboard and you think up ideas, until you come up with the story and how you are going to position the cameras.

Step two: Once you’ve got your ideas you put them on the table until you come up with the actual story. Once you have the story, the storyboard will be used so you don’t forget the scenes and what you have to do with them.

Step three: After the storyboard is approved it is sent to the layout department. They then sort out the costumes, the shape of the plastering, the drawings and everything that will need to form part of the animation.

Step four: Model sheets show you the form of the character and the scenery.

I hope this article has helped you to see how you would start to produce your own animation.

18 Malet Lambert Summer School 2013 Magazine HULL IN 2017 By Bethany Drury ction 5 Do you wonder what our world will be like in 2017? Well if you do, keep reading and find out Se how Hull will change massively in the next 4 years! We know our city as Hull, however in 4 years time our city may be called the ‘city of culture’! As part of this, many religious buildings will be built so that there will be more places for people to pray.

Also, because the city is changing, the council will want to ask young people and adults reading this magazine what would be a good replacement for closed down shops and centres? Being a young person writing this article, I got the chance to interview other young people, to find out how they think they could help make Hull the ‘city of culture’. I was told by the young minds that they would build a superstore that includes many clothing ranges and accessories for religious people. Also they wanted to have a zoo themed children’s diner. Last but not least they thought of building an Indian drive in on Holderness road.

To make this city a safer place, I think that the Deep should be moved to a different place because it is placed right on top of the river , if it was moved there would be a lower risk of people falling into the river. As a shopper I think that the town centre should have many more shopping facilities for the young and old. CULTURE CITY By Chloe Hill & Rebecca Lambert

Will Hull be the future ‘City of Culture’? A lot of people that think that in 2017 Hull will be a cultural and brilliant city to live in. Here are some ideas the public have.

There are lots of people on the internet saying there are too many takeaways in Hull. Here is one of the many quotes I found:

A kebab shop owner stated that “There are too many takeaways in Hull; everyone is now complaining that they’re gaining weight when they are the ones eating too many takeaways.”

This problem can be solved for the fantastic future ahead, by changing some takeaways to different cultural restaurants and making them healthier.

The public also say they would like more buildings in Hull such as: shopping centres, libraries, swimming baths, all age clubs for young people and a pub in each neighbourhood.

Hopefully things will change in Hull and in 2017 it will be the ‘City of Culture’!

Malet Lambert Summer School 2013 Magazine 19 OUR FUTURE By Oliver Thorn

Earlier in June this year, Hull put forward a bid of £11 million to try and be the ‘City of Culture’ in 2017. If they get to be the ‘City of Culture’ they will be holding 1500 events, 25 festivals, 12 artist residencies and projects reaching into the streets throughout the city. This article will tell you what improvements the city will benefit from.

Although people say that the KC Stadium is absolutely amazing, it could be improved further if there was more seating as Hull City A.F.C (now known as Hull City Tigers or Hull Tigers) have been promoted to the Premier League. Therefore, more people will be able to watch Hull City against teams such as: Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea. If the stadium is extended enough it could be used in the future as an Athletics Stadium as well as a football and rugby stadium.

In addition to that, primary schools in Hull could be built or expanded as the population of Hull is increasing and if people from different cities and countries come to live in Hull, we will need more schools for their children! OUR FUTURE By Elouise Short & Olivia Falconer

Hull is a lively city with lots of shops and a marina. However, in the future we feel there are changes that need to happen. These are:

A series of skyscraper flats that house over 14,000 residents should be built. This will reduce the amount of homeless citizens in Hull and bring more people to the city. We also need more houses for people who have big families.

Hull is a multi-cultural city therefore we think there should be improvements in the amount of Christian churches and Muslim mosques. This is a necessity with the mix of religious beliefs in Hull.

For our younger residents, we think Hull University should be more appealing and there should be an entertainment arena, for bands to play in during the day.

Because of the rush with transport to work, we feel that there should be an underground subway, to help with the outstanding train and road traffic.
