Review The use of water resources for inland fisheries in South Africa JR McCafferty1, BR Ellender1, OLF Weyl2* and PJ Britz1 1Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, Rhodes University, Grahamstown 6139, South Africa 2South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB), Private Bag 1015, Grahamstown 6139, South Africa Abstract The contribution of inland fisheries to food security, livelihood provision, poverty alleviation, and economic development in developing African countries is well documented, but there is surprisingly little literature on the history, current status and potential of South Africa’s inland fishery resources. This presents a constraint to the management and sustainable develop- ment of inland fisheries. A literature review of peer-reviewed and grey literature was thus undertaken which is presented as a synthesis of knowledge on inland fisheries in South Africa. We track the chronology of literary themes on inland fisheries from the colonial era to the present, provide an overview of the recreational, subsistence and commercial sub-sectors, the production potential of inland waters, interventions to promote fishery development, and attempts to value inland fisheries. The review summarises the current state of knowledge on fisheries resources, outlines potential sources of data, highlights relevant and important information, and identifies knowledge gaps. The literature survey reveals an urgent need for research covering the biological, social, economic and governance aspects, if inland fisheries are to be developed in a rational and sustainable manner which promotes South Africa’s national policy goals. (Monogenea, Diplozoidae) is described from the gills of Sikukia gud- geri Smith, 1931 (Cyprinidae) collected from Jinghong Basin, a tributary of the international Lancang-Mekong River. This is the first diplozoid species from S. gudgeri and its description increases the number of Paradiplozoon species recorded in China to 25. The new species is distinguished from congeners by a combination of morphological and molecular features. The anterior end of the median plate is thickened in the marginal area and a narrow rectangular trapeze spur connects to the anterior jaw through two separate anterior joining sclerites. The posterior end of the med- ian plate sclerite is invaginated with a smooth strip-shaped posterior joining sclerite. Comparison of a newly obtained sequence of rRNA ITS2 with 18 other congeneric sequences from GenBank provides support for separation of the new species. Toxicity tests were conducted for the determination of different concentration of ZnO to Oreochromis mossambicus (250mg, 500mg, 1000mg, 1500mg and 2000mg) for a period of 14 days. The behaviour, haematological and biochemical parameters such as protein, carbohydrate and lipid of Oreochromis mossambicus exposed to ZnO nanoparticles for a period of 14 days were observed for control and exposed to different concentration (250mg, 500mg, 1000mg, 1500mg and 2000mg) of ZnO nanoparticles. The hematological parameters such as RBC, Hb, Hct and WBC in ZnO nanoparticles treated fish decreased when compared ABSTRACT to control. Total protein, carbohydrate and lipid was decreased in zinc oxide nanoparticles exposed fish when compared to control.
