Although significant Geonim from Babylonia and Palestine during the eighth and ninth centuries have been identified, the extent to which their writings reached Europe, and the channels through which they passed, remain somewhat unclear. A fragile consensus suggests that, at least initi- ally, rabbinic teachings and rulings from Eretz Israel traveled most directly to centers in Italy and later to Germany (Ashkenaz), while those of Babylonia emerged predominantly in the western Sephardic milieu of Spain and North Africa.1 To be sure, leading Sephardic talmudists prior to, and even during, the eleventh century were not yet to be found primarily within Europe. Jewish community and civic commune in the high Middle Ages'' CHRISTOPH CLUSE 1. The following observations do not aim to provide a comprehensive phe nomenology of the J ewish community during the high and late medieval periods. Rather 1 wish to present the outlines of a model which describes the status of the Jewish community within the medieval town or city, and to ask how the concepts of >inclusion< and >exclusion< can serve to de scribe that status. Using a number of selected examples, almost exclusively drawn from the western regions of the medieval German empire, 1 will concentrate, first, on a comparison betweenJewish communities and other corporate bodies (>universitates<) during the high medieval period, and, secondly, on the means by which Jews and Jewish communities were included in the urban civic corporations of the later Middle Ages. To begin with, 1 should point out that the study of the medieval Jewish community and its various historical settings cannot draw on an overly rich tradition in German historical research. 1 The >general <historiography of towns and cities that originated in the nineteenth century accorded only sporadic attention to the J ews. Signed: 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is primarily a cultural history of abortion in the early medieval West. It is a historical study of perceptions, rather than the practice, of abortion. The span covered ranges from the sixth century, when certain localised ecclesiastical initiatives in the form of councils and sermons addressed abortion, through to the ninth century, when some of these initiatives were integrated into pastoral texts produced in altogether different locales. The thesis uses a range of predominantly ecclesiastical texts – canonical collections, penitentials, sermons, hagiography, scriptural commentaries, but also law- codes – to bring to light the multiple ways in which abortion was construed, experienced and responded to as a moral and social problem. Although there is a concerted focus upon the ecclesiastical tradition on abortion, a focus which ultimately questions how such a tradition ought to be understood, the thesis also explores the broader cultural significance of abortion. Early medieval churchmen, rulers, and jurists saw multiple things in abortion and there were multiple perspectives upon abortion. The thesis illuminates the manifold and, occasionally, surprising ways in which abortion was perceived in relation to gender, sexuality, politics, theology and the church. The history of early medieval abortion has been largely underwritten. Moreover, it has been inadequately historicised. -

Patterson* Abstract: In 589 a great flood of the Tiber sent a torrent of water rushing through Rome. According to Gregory of Tours, the floodwaters carried some remarkable detritus: several dying serpents and, perhaps most strikingly, the corpse of a dragon. The flooding was soon followed by plague and the death of a pope. This remarkable chain of events leaves us with puzzling questions: What significance would Gregory have located in such a narrative? For a modern reader, the account (apart from its dragon) reads like a descrip- tion of a natural disaster. Yet how did people in the early Middle Ages themselves per- ceive such events? This article argues that, in making sense of the disasters at Rome in 589, Gregory revealed something of his historical consciousness: drawing on both bibli- cal imagery and pagan historiography, Gregory struggled to identify appropriate objects of both blame and succor in the wake of calamity. The fourteen papers presented at the seminar are included in this volume. The seminar was followed by a public symposium “Lessons from the Past: Climate, Disease, and Famine” in which five participants of the seminar presented and discussed issues related to the seminar to an audience that included 245 scholars, students and members of the public. Two additional papers presented at the symposium are also included in this volume. The seminar was organized by the IUSSP Scientific Panel on Historical Demography and hosted by Reitaku University. The seminar received support from Reitaku University and was held in cooperation with the Centre for Economic Demography, Lund University and the Population Association of Japan. The public symposium was organized as part of a series of events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Reitaku University. The topic of the seminar was timely not only in the academic sense, but also in a practical sense, with the simultaneous worldwide outbreak of H1N1 flu. -

THE BA’ALEI TOSAFOS OF GERMANY 12th - 13th CENTURIES The history of Jewry in Germany is closely bound with that of France. The cultural ties between the French and German Jewish communities existed for centuries. Travel seems not to have been hampered between the academies of the two countries, even during the Crusades. The development of the French Tosafists academies, with their unique approach to Talmudic studies, was paralleled in Germany, although the work of the German scholars has come down to us in a different form from that of the French school. Where the thoughts of the French scholars exist for us largely in the collection of Tosafos, the German scholars’ words have come down to us in a more individualized form - in halachic works of individual authors. These works differ from the French Tosafists not only in individualization, but in content and purpose as well. The goal of Tosafos is the elucidation of the Talmudic texts per se, without attempting to apply the implications of their studies to practical halacha. However, the main thrust of the works of the German school is halachic application. To the German scholars, the Tosafist method was a vehicle to arrive at halachic conclusions relating to practical questions of law. The father of the German Tosafists was R. Yitzchak ben Asher I (d.1133), known as the Riva. The Riva studied in Mainz, and later became a pupil of Rashi. After spending a few years as a merchant, which sometimes involved business trips that took him as far as Russia, he repaired to Speyer where he gathered many disciples who later became the leaders of German Jewry. -

Bishops and People Looking for Local Religious Life in Late Antiquity
DOI: 10.46586/er.12.2021.8775 Entangled Religions 12.1 (2021) License: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 er.ceres.rub.de Bishops and People Looking for Local Religious Life in Late Antiquity MAIJASTINA KAHLOS University of Helsinki, Finland ABSTRACT The religiosity of late antique and early medieval communities in the Mediter- ranean world has been vigorously examined and debated. This religious life has been called (among many other terms) ‘popular Christianity,’ ‘local Christianity,’ the ‘second church,’ ‘Religion zweiter Ordnung,’ and ‘the third paganism.’ In my article, I analyse late antique religious life from the viewpoint of encounters—between the ideals of the ec- clesiastical elite and the people’s local cultic practices. These practices, embedded in the local communities, varied by regions, but we can see similarities in the interaction of bish- ops with their local population. I will show how the ecclesiastical writers portrayed local cultic practices in negative terms as another religion (‘paganism,’ ‘idolatry,’ ‘demonic/ diabolic practices’), divergent from their own (‘Christianity’), or even as a distortion be- yond ‘proper’ religion (‘magic,’ ‘superstition,’ ‘sacrilege’). In my analysis, I discuss and test various approaches that scholars have developed to understand the tensions between the bishops and the local people: David Frankfurter (local religion), Rubina Raja and Jörg Rüpke (local lived religion), and Nicola Denzey Lewis (magic as lived religion), Lisa Kaaren Bailey (lay religion) and Lucy Grig (popular culture). My focus is on the western Mediterranean world from the fourth to sixth centuries, and the cases of polemical en- counters I analyse come from the writings of North Italian, Gallic and Hispanic bishops (Paulinus of Nola, Maximus of Turin, Philaster of Brescia, Caesarius of Arles, and Martin of Braga).
