MAD PROFESSOR 40 YEARS OF DUB IRIEMAG.COM REGGAE. MAD PROFESSOR 40 YEARS OF DUB Photography by: Richard Aldred So, just how sane is the Mad Professor? On the content of his character and the results of his recordings, he is one of the sanest record producers. To understand the sanity of Mad Professor, we have to go back to FOLLOW his early childhood. Mad Professor Neil Joseph Stephen Fraser (1955) was born in Guyana, a small country in the northern part of South America. As a child, there wasn’t’ much technology around. The only thing in his house with technology Featured Album was a light bulb and a radio. One day Neil asked his mother, “how does the light bulb work?” She said she didn’t know and that he should go to the library and get a book, which he did. Neil went to the library and got a book. He then asked her what is the man doing inside the radio? She said there’s no man inside the radio. Neil replied, yes, there is. Sometimes he talks, and sometimes he sings. She said, “Look, there’s no man in the radio.” So one day, when she went to work, Neil took a screwdriver and went to the back of the radio and opened it up and said, “Oh, she was right. There’s no man in the radio.” Instead, there were resistors, capacitors and 40 Years of Dub dials, and all sorts of things. When she returned home, the back was still off the radio, so she told him to go October 15, 2020 to the library and learn about the radio. So Neil went to the library and got a book, and he taught himself WEBSITE electronics and built a radio before the age of 11. ariwa.com Neil would earn his nickname, Mad Professor, from his friends at school, amazed by the experiments he carried out as a youth. You could say that his curiosity as a child set him on a path to Dub Madness! IRIEMAG.COM Having built a radio and telephone system at the age of 10 years, it was no surprise that his interest and subsequent career in electronics, along with a love of Motown, Philadelphia International, Treasure Isle, and music of all types, propelled him onward.

  • The Aura of Dubplate Specials in Finnish Reggae Sound System Culture
“Chase Sound Boys Out of Earth”: The Aura of Dubplate Specials in Finnish Reggae Sound System Culture Feature Article Kim Ramstedt Åbo Akademi University (Finland) Abstract This study seeks to expand our understanding of how dubplate specials are produced, circulated, and culturally valued in the international reggae sound system culture of the dub diaspora by analysing the production and performance of “Chase the Devil” (2005), a dubplate special commissioned by the Finnish MPV sound system from Jamaican reggae singer Max Romeo. A dubplate special is a unique recording where, typically, a reggae artist re-records the vocals to one of his or her popular songs with new lyrics that praise the sound system that commissioned the recording. Scholars have previously theorized dubplates using Walter Benjamin’s concept of aura, thereby drawing attention to the exclusivity and uniqueness of these traditionally analog recordings. However, since the advent of digital technologies in both recording and sound system performance, what Benjamin calls the “cult value” of producing and performing dubplates has become increasingly complex and multi-layered, as digital dubplates now remediate prior aesthetic forms of the analog. By turning to ethnographic accounts from the sound system’s DJ selectors, I investigate how digital dubplates are still culturally valued for their aura, even as the very concept of aura falls into question when applied to the recording and performance of digital dubplates. Keywords: aura, dubplate special, DJ, performance, reggae, recording, authenticity Kim Ramstedt is a PhD candidate in musicology at Åbo Akademi University in Finland. In his dissertation project, Ramstedt is studying DJs as cultural intermediaries and the localization of musical cultures through DJ practices.

Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps. Junior Kelly – “Urban Poet” Label: Irievibrations Records Produced by: Irievibrations Records Distribution by: Groove Attack Digital Download Release: 09-10-2015 Junior Kelly, who is among Jamaica’s finest Conscious Voices, Songwriter extraordinaire and Reggae Music’s most prolific exponent, is set to release his 10th studio album for Austrian based label Irie Vibrations. It is scheduled for release on October 9, 2015. Junior Kelly feels confident that this album will be a game changer similar to his mega hit “Love so Nice”, and hopes that it will shine a light on Reggae Music and provide Reggae fans with much needed salvation, substance and food for thought, to uplift them in these difficult times. The album is a Masterpiece that Junior Kelly describes as “Pop Culture”, where Roots & Culture meets Pop, which is an eclectic mix culminating with incredible live riddims, exciting musicianship and vocal artistry at its best. Junior Kelly claims it as his best work to date and is extremely happy with the outcome, as it is the first time he was able to have such artistic freedom. He states “it was an absolute pleasure working with Irie Vibrations as they listened to me and gave me full autonomy to express myself.” The album has 16 beautiful tracks which encompass more than just Reggae, a little dancehall, RnB, Soul, Jazz and shows the artiste’s growth and maturity, from the Reggae infused “High Hopes”, “Power to the People”, “Nuh Dig It Up” to the smooth RnB tracks “Sneak Peek”, “Stay With Me” and “In Love” to the soul searching “No one is Higher” and “Everybody Needs Somebody” to the Jazzy “Hooked on Mary”, this album will leave you on a musical high! It was Junior Kelly’s game changing roots reggae mega hit single “Love So Nice” that established him as a star throughout Jamaica in the year 2000.
