A Catholic school also seems to have no impact on the direction of giving. The information seems to suggest that parishioner attitudes and religious convictions have a lot to do with other factors and how contributions are made. Research by Dean Hoge and others1 on giving attitudes show that the pastor, parish leadership and management styles can affect the level of giving. For example, members of several denominations were asked if their church leaders were sufficiently transparent and accountable to parishioners/church members regarding how church contributions were used. Four out of five denominations queried received negative responses as seen below: Lutherans - 24%; Assembly of God members - 26%; Presbyterians - 29%; Catholic (the highest of all groups) over 39%. Obviously, we have to do a better job in this. [From The Cost of Catholic Parishes and Schools.] “People sit in the pew and say ‘What’s the difference — they’re not going to miss my money,’” they say. “When you have a whole parish saying that, you’ve got a problem.” In addition, “A lot of folks say ‘Why give to my church?’ It’s impersonal,” says Charles Zech at Villanova University. “It freezes me out of the decision-making process. That’s where the Protestants beat us up.

Daily Saints - 27 August. Feast of Saint Monica She is the patron saint of alcoholics, alcoholism, difficult marriages, disappointing children, homemakers, housewives, married women, wives, mothers, victims of adultery or unfaithfulness, victims of verbal abuse, widows. Because of her name and place of birth, Monica is assumed to have been born in Thagaste (present-day Souk Ahras, Algeria). She is believed to have been a Berber on the basis of her name. She was married early in life to Patricius, a Roman pagan, who held an official position in Tagaste. Patricius had a violent temper and appears to have been of dissolute habits; apparently, his mother was the same way. Patricius' mother lived with the couple and the duo's temper flares proved to be a constant challenge to young Monica. Monica's alms, deeds, and prayer habits annoyed Patricius, but it is said that he always held her in respect. Monica’s prayers and example finally won her husband and mother-in-law to Christianity. Her husband died in 371, one year after his baptism. Monica had three children who survived infancy: sons Augustine and Navigius and daughter Perpetua. Unable to secure baptism for them, she grieved heavily when Augustine fell ill. In her distress she asked Patricius to allow Augustine to be baptized; he agreed, then withdrew this consent when the boy recovered. But Monica's joy and relief at Augustine's recovery turned to anxiety as he misspent his renewed life being wayward. He was finally sent to school at Madauros. As time passed, Perpetua and Navigius entered the religious life, but unfortunately, Augustine became lazy and uncouth.

  • Monica Was Married in an Arranged Marriage at a Young Age to Patricius, an Older Man Who Served As a Roman Civil Servant and Did Not Share His Wife’S Religion
Monica was married in an arranged marriage at a young age to Patricius, an older man who served as a Roman civil servant and did not share his wife’s religion. Together, they raised 3 children: Augustine, Nagivius, and Perpetua although they did not always see eye-to-eye as to what was best for their children. As a Catholic, Monica wanted to have her children baptized, but he would have nothing of it. Patricius had a volatile temper but did not take his anger out with physical violence towards his family. Although married life was difficult for Monica, she maintained a cheerful disposition and prayed for the conversion of her pagan husband. Monica’s prayer, witness and counsel helped other wives who found themselves in similar circumstances with equally difficult husbands.i In time, Monica’s prayers for her husband bore rich fruit. He was baptized into the Church a year before his death in 371. Augustine, the oldest of the three children was fifteen. Monica, now a single mother, dedicated the rest of her life to raising her children alone. Augustine soon began to assert his independence and became the new focus of Monica’sprayers. He fathered a child out of wedlock and Monica was not at all happy with the woman he chose to live with. He began to practice the false religion of Manichaeism which further upset her Christian sensitivities. Her first impulse was to shun her son. Like Saint Joseph, troubled over Mary, peace came after a dream that strengthened her conviction that her son would eventually come around.

  • St. Monica Feast: August 27
St. Monica Feast: August 27 Facts Feast Day: August 27 Patron: of Wives and Abuse Victims Birth: 331 Death: 387 Saint Monica, also known as Monica of Hippo, is St. Augustine of Hippo's mother. She was born in 331 A.D. in Tagaste, which is present-day Algeria. When she was very young, she was married off to the Roman pagan Patricius, who shared his mother's violent temper. Patricius' mother lived with the couple and the duo's temper flares proved to be a constant challenge to young Monica. While Monica's prayers and Christian deeds bothered Patricius, he is said to have respected her beliefs. Three children were born to Monica and Patricius: Augustine, Navigius, and Perpetua. Unfortunately, Monica was unable to baptize her children and when Augustine fell ill, Monica pleaded with Patricius to allow their son to be baptized. Patricius allowed it, but when Augustine was healthy again, he withrew his permission. For years Monica prayed for her husband and mother-in-law, until finally, one year before Patricius' death, she successfully converted them. As time passed, Perpetua and Navigius entered the religious life, but unfortunately Augustine became lazy and uncouth. This greatly worried Monica, so when Patricius died, she sent the 17-year-old Augustine to Carthage for schooling. While in Carthage, Augustine became a Manichaean, which was a major religion that saw the world as light and darkness, and when one died, they were removed from the world of matter and returned to the world of light, which is where life comes from.

  • All About Saints
All About Saints http://www.catholic.org/saints/faq.php Exactly how many saints are there? There are over 10,000 named saints and beatified from history, the Roman Martyology and Orthodox sources, but no definitive "head count". How does the Church choose saints? Canonization, the process the Church uses to name a saint, has only been used since the tenth century. For hundreds of years, starting with the first martyrs of the early Church, saints were chosen by public acclaim. Though this was a more democratic way to recognize saints, some saints' stories were distorted by legend and some never existed. Gradually, the bishops and finally the Vatican took over authority for approving saints. In 1983, Pope John Paul II made sweeping changes in the canonization procedure. The process begins after the death of a Catholic whom people regard as holy. Often, the process starts many years after death in order give perspective on the candidate. The local bishop investigates the candidate's life and writings for heroic virtue (or martyrdom) and orthodoxy of doctrine. Then a panel of theologians at the Vatican evaluates the candidate. After approval by the panel and cardinals of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the pope proclaims the candidate "venerable." The next step, beatification, requires evidence of one miracle (except in the case of martyrs). Since miracles are considered proof that the person is in heaven and can intercede for us, the miracle must take place after the candidate's death and as a result of a specific petition to the candidate.

LITURGICAL CALENDAR FOR THE DIOCESES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 2022 Committee on Divine Worship LITURGICAL CALENDAR FOR THE DIOCESES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 2022 United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Divine Worship Cover Photo: Getty Images Copyright © 2020, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC. All rights reserved. No part of this work may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopying, recording, or by any information storage and retrieval system, without permission in writing from the copyright holder. 2 INTRODUCTION Each year the Secretariat of Divine Worship of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops publishes the Liturgical Calendar for the Dioceses of the United States of America. This Calendar is used by authors of ordines and other liturgical aids published to foster the celebration of the liturgy in our country. The Calendar is based upon the General Roman Calendar, promulgated by Pope Saint Paul VI on February 14, 1969, subsequently amended by the Holy See, and the Proper Calendar for the Dioceses of the United States of America, approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.1 This Calendar has been updated to reflect the names and titles of the various liturgical days in conformity with the Roman Missal, Third Edition. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal reminds us that in the cycles of readings and prayers proclaimed throughout the year in the sacred liturgy “the mysteries of redemption are celebrated so as to be in some way made present.” Thus may each celebration of the Holy Eucharist which is served by this Calendar be for the Church in the United States of America “the high point both of the action by which God sanctifies the world in Christ and of the worship that the human race offers to the Father, adoring him through Christ, the Son of God, in the Holy Spirit.”2 Sincerely in Christ, Rev.
