YE OLDE CAR CLUB YEAR 2013
Ye Olde Car Club of the Tri-Cities was officially chartered in 1963 to preserve and maintain motor vehicles of historical value and to serve as an accurate and technical source of information concerning historical automobiles for the benefit of its members as well as the general public.
Ye Olde Car Club is headquartered in Kennewick, Washington and has members primarily from Southeast Washington, Western Washington, Idaho and Alaska -- over a hundred individuals and families with nearly 400 antique and classic automobiles.
Aside from regular monthly meetings, club members participate in frequent community and social events, driving tours both short and long, and a variety of activities each month. Annual dues are only $15, with the only membership requirement being an appreciation for historical automobiles.
As an old car club, we are also there to guide you when you decide to buy an old car, help you to restore it, share stories about your car, and provide whatever it takes to see that owning an old car is an enjoyable experience for you! Our club has among it's members a wealth of knowledge about the auto industry that we would love to share with you. Some of our members usually can be found at the 2500 Queensgate Sterlings Restaurant in Richland at 8am on Wednesdays. Come and say "Hi". You'll be surprised at how much fun can be had for only $15 a year!

ESTABLISHING THE YE OLDE CAR CLUB
Nearly 50 years ago the Ye Olde Car Club was started by Cork Simmelink, Bob Graves, Jerry Durham, and Jim Stafford of TriCities, along with Gil Linden, Dale Henson, and Russ Duffield from the Yakima area. Each of these men shared a passion for antique automobiles and the mutual desire to own, restore, maintain and drive these splendid old machines. There little group grew quickly as the number of members doubled, and then doubled again. Today the membership in the club includes over one hundred individuals and families. These members bring with them hundreds of classic cars of all vintages. Surely, the founders of the club never expected their creation to attract so much attention. More significant, they could never foreseen the special role the club would to play as the members passed on an appreciation of the history of automotive technology to the next generation, and watched more and more youngsters recognize the importance of preserving these wonderful old relics.

What a great swap meet, and thank you’s go out to all the wonderful volunteers that made this year’s swap meet such a great success. Job well done !!! We had 41 members helping in various sections and once again Dolores and ladies, out did themselves with a wonderful spaghetti dinner. Our advertising this year must have really worked, because we added three more spaces to the field (which were sold) and the only spots available were inside the building. This year we had $1810 in pre-registration, $2545 at the gate and our donation box netted $2062.

The garage tour consisted of a tour of Robbin Johanson, Dick Johanson, Jack Yale, Bill Houchin, and Martha Shreve’s garages and the ladies tour consisted of Robbin and Martha’s garages, Beaver Bark, Allied Arts, and Flying Fibers. Donuts and drinks at Robbin Johanson and luncheon at Martha Shreve’s.

LeMay America’s Car Museum and LeMay Family Collection
Harold LeMay was a self-made man having been born in Yakima in 1919, served in the Navy during WWII, and building multi-million dollar business – Harold LeMay Enterprises, primarily built around his large garbage collection business. LeMay began his collection consisting of over 3,500 cars with a 1934 Packard Sedan in 1952. LeMay was recognized by Guinness as having the world’s largest antique and vintage vehicle collection. LeMay passed away in 2000 at the age of 81. Harold’s wife, Nancy and children, have continued the Lemay car tradition forming the LeMay Family Collection Foundation.
A small contingent of YOCC members ventured to Tacoma on August 29 for three days of getting the ultimate “car fix”. On Friday, the group of seven consisting of trip organizer Ron Smith, Dick Johanson, Robbin and Carolyn Johanson, Jo Ann Cameron (sister of Robbin and Dick), Tom and Laura Beaver toured America’s Car Museum which only opened a year ago June. We spent over four hours in this incredible four story facility (three floors below ground). We were very fortunate to have an excellent and very car savvy tour guide in Doug Wolford, a long time friend of Laura and Tom, and a fellow car enthusiast. Doug is “semi-retired”, but has a local insurance agency specializing in classic car insurance representing Hagerty and other firms. He also is a volunteer at the museum. Doug graciously spent over four hours with us pointing out little known facts about the cars and their history.
Bright and early Saturday, we headed to the Marymount Event Center, eighty-plus acres of manicured grounds and beautiful early 20 century red brick buildings for the 36th annual LeMay Car Show. Marymount, originally a Catholic Military School, was purchased by Harold LeMay in the mid-seventies from the Catholic Church with the promise to keep the grounds and buildings in “show condition”. He and family have certainly kept that promise. The Event Center is a Tacoma area treasure, is open to the public most year round and available for gathering such as weddings. Marymount is where much of the LeMay car collection is displayed and stored. Huge storage buildings were constructed on the property containing three-levels of cars on special built racks. An open car show is held each year on the grounds and this year’s event had hundreds of cars, trucks and specialty vehicles. Also, a car auction featuring 400+ cars was held Saturday and Sunday.
Later that morning, we boarded the bus taking us the couple of miles to the LeMay Home Grounds, the original home and collection of the LeMays. This was really the crown jewel of the weekend. The Home is only open to the public one day a year coinciding with the Marymount car show and car auction. We spent two hours there and could have used another four hours. The place is incredible with very well done displays featuring every kind of car along with collectables including dolls, pedal cars, gas station memorabilia and more.
A busy weekend with lots of walking and lots of cars, but well worth the visit to Tacoma.
