{President Tim Wourms} Hi everybody and welcome to the Spring edition of Kamshaft. Well, it is time again to take off the car protectors and get the cars ready for the open road. I have already seen a few cars out and about and look forward to seeing everyone doing the same by attending the Easter Parade. I personally can't wait to get the Bel Air up and going again. I can tell you that the Swap Meet is almost ready, and that we have some other exciting Spring functions planned. Being a member based club it would be great to see everyone get involved - a large amount of time has been spent planning these events and it will be great to see the regular faces and the not so regular faces in attendance. The ambulance is coming along with additions noticeable gains to the restoration every week, and I would like to thank the dedicated work being done every week by the team. We can all say with great pride that this is another fine restoration worthy of great pride in our work. Happy & Safe Vintage Motoring. Tim and his First Lady Barb

LETTERS to the EDITOR Nice to see the story about Ed Shaw. DP

Great job on the Kamshaft. Lots of input for the month of February. The colour also really helps WELL DONE. KB

Thank you ....I really like the calendar to inform me of club events coming up. SB & JM

Some interesting web sites to look at for cars and things for sale. www.kijiji.com, www.castanet.net, www.jalopyjunction.com, and of course our club web page for cars & parts www.VCCC.com.

A sign of the times is that the Kamloops Malls no longer seem to have money in their budgets for Car Shows as this year we do not have any shows scheduled. Having no Wedding Cars and Mall Shows this means quite a loss of funds for the club. If you have any suggestions in replacing this loss of income for the club contact your executive.

I have been contacted by Peter Findlay [VCCC Web Master] wondering if our club members ever look at the VCCC Club web page. I will check at the next meeting to see how many have looked at it recently and ask for comments.

VCCC MEMBERSHIP PIN PRESENTATION

Keith Galbraith our Membership Director will be presenting the following members with their VCCC membership pins and bars at the meeting this month. If your name is listed it would be nice if you and your spouse could attend the meeting to receive your pins in person. We currently have 88 members and the average year of membership is 17 years. That is a lot of experience and says something for our club as I sure a lot of other chapters and clubs do not have such a record.

Classic Car Auction in Hawaii [Follow up from Goble & Mail Article in January Kamshaft][Submitted by W & S Obieglo] Aloha everyone, We were in Oahu, Hawaii, and on our last day in Honolulu, we heard about a classic car auction taking place at the Hawaii Honolulu Convention Center. We were anticipating much more than we saw in the type of vehicles being auctioned off. Most vehicles had reserve bids and while we were there a 2004 Rolls Royce Corniche convertible had trouble attracting bids higher than $16,000 US. With the exception of three cars, the balance did not sell. Even the muscle cars were attracting maximum bids under $10,000 US. The US economy, even in Hawaii, is in such bad condition that automobiles, even collector vehicles, there was no market for them. This is a caution for those of us with classic cars in Canada that until the economy recovers that unless you absolutely have to you might want to reconsider placing your treasured vehicle on the market. You might be as shocked as I was at the prices, or lack of… We did not stay long as more than 1/3 of the cars passing through the auction were receiving ridiculously low bids and rolled off of the block unsold. We thought that we would share a few of the photos with you. The yellow Morris Minor pictured here did sell for $2700 US.

By: - Gordon H. Ficke [Reprint permission by Old Autos] When I spoke with Nigel Matthews, Manager of Specialty Vehicles for the Insurance Corporation of B.C. he asked me to pass on some valuable and timely information to the readers of Old Autos. Especially he asked me to give a heads up for those who transport their vintage or collectable car in an open or enclosed trailer with four wheels. “Make sure you buy at least 5 million dollars of third party liability coverage fro your trailer.” Matthew advises “especially if the trailer has four wheels.” Why? Nigel related a tragic incident that took place in Washington State when a B.C. resident had used his trailer to transport a car. The trailer owner checked the tires of his four-wheeled trailer before heading on the Interstate. When he was cruising down the freeway one of the wheels unfortunately came off the trailer and bounced over the center divider and into oncoming traffic. Two small cars stopped to avoid hitting the wheel but a driver of a semi-trailer unit did not, and ran over both vehicles, killing the two drivers. The driver pulling the trailer was deemed to be at fault for having the wheel fall off his trailer and initially causing the accident. The driver of the big rig regrettably could not stop his unit before running over those cars. As the very sad scenario unraveled it was discovered that while the B.C. driver had 2 million dollar third party liability coverage on his trailer the truck driver had no insurance whatsoever. The families of the two deceased drivers sued the B.C. driver for four million dollars. Thankfully for the B.C. driver the suit was covered only because each of those two deceased drivers had one million each in underinsured motorist protection and combined with the B.C. drivers’ 2 million dollar third party trailer coverage, there was enough money to settle the suit. However this was a wakeup call, and could have resulted in dire financial circumstance for the B.C. driver had he opted to purchase less than 2 million dollars in third party liability for his trailer. And what would have happened if the deceased drivers didn’t have that extra insurance? You guessed it; he would have had to come up with the remaining 2 million dollars to pay the suit. So the moral is getting the extra insurance as your future may depend on it! It only costs a few dollars, but it offers a little reassurance, especially if you are travelling in the USA. I think we can all agree that peace of mind is something you can’t attach a dollar value to. Happy & Safe motoring to everyone in 2009. 6

Meet Your Governor: - John Rostron. I will try to be brief--however at 71 there is a lot to miles to one’s profile. I was born-- Vancouver B.C.--a long time ago. Part of my Work History is as follows: - Pacific Press (Van. Sun &Prov.) D. Mgr & Advertising. 12years, Coinamatic (Commercial Laundry) Sales/Branch Management/Provincial Mgr/Regional Vice Pres. 15yrs, Transferred to Calgary in 1971 then on to Toronto 1979 and then 1985 moved back to Vancouver. Wolfe 5yrs, Car Sales. [I spent 10 yrs of Winters in Mexico--Baja peninsula (San Felipe)--We had our own house built 100 feet from the shore of Sea of Cortez. Selling cars was the only way that I could work in the Summer and take off in the Winter. No other job would allow me that freedom. It worked well as I made enough to live 6 months of the year here, and the high interest on the money in the Bank allowed us to Winter in Mexico. Having a 4 plex in Burnaby that provided income as well also helped. As a matter of fact, Noella’s brother lived in one of the suites until he and his wife Pat bought their house in Surrey. I then created my own company Auto Extras Ltd and provided vehicles of all description for the film industry in the Vancouver area until retirement in 2003 and then we move to Merritt in 2005.

In 1964 I purchased a Model A Ford which was first collector car of many. However my main interest in Collector Cars are the Orphans, Nash, Hudson, Studebaker etc. ALSO the original type "Survivor" cars.

John’s Cars 1932 Nash 1953 Tyson & John with 1953 Nash There have been too many over the years to list here. Some of them had to make way for the transfers and major moves; others gave way to changing interests. The clubs I have belonged to over the years include Alberta Pioneer Auto Club (Calgary). [Incidentally, through this club I met and became fast friends with Peter deWit, Noella Dickinson's Brother. This was a great friendship that lasted through transfers across Canada (both of us in different directions) until his untimely passing in 2000], Historical Automobile Society of Canada (Toronto), Antique Car Club of Canada (Toronto), Totem A&T Club (Vancouver), Vintage Car Club of Canada (Vancouver &Kamloops Chapters).

The move to Merritt was prompted by retirement and the past association with the area. My first memories of the area are visits with my Great Uncle and Aunt in Merritt during the early 2nd War era. This, of course meant trips up the old Fraser Canyon Hwy, which was an adventure in itself in the early '40s. I do have a few photos from these trips that include autos' of the time. I will share these sometime in the future issues.

It was in Merritt in the very early years that I first met Carl Jurreit when we were about 12 yrs old. There were a few visits of some 2 weeks or so each during Summer Vacations. Since my Great Uncle had family in Kamloops, there were a number of trips with him over the lower road which was gravel all the way at that time. Other than the extended visits there were a number of shorter family vacations visits as well. I was left with very good memories and did visit the area again a number of times with my own family as they grew.

I have 2 children: - Benjamin, who is a Prof. at University of Alberta in Edmonton, teaching Geological Engineering in the Earth Sciences Dept. He is also a lecturer worldwide, on the project of storage of carbon gases underground. Janine, who is a Respitory Therapist working in Kamloops with people that require breathing assistance.

Linda and I met in Vancouver after my return to Vancouver in 1985 and we were married in 1987. To finish off my story you will quite often see our dog Tyson travelling with us as he also enjoys the old cars. Looking forward to being your Chapter Governor. John Rostron 7

SUNDAY APRIL 12TH

9:00 TILL 11:00 AM COFFEE PANCAKES & SAUSAGES

$3.00 PER PERSON Bring the Family Parade Line Up @ 11:00 AM Coopers Shopping Center

PS: - Ladies we need cookies to sell at the cook trailer along with coffee during lineup at Westsyde Shopping Center & the end of parade at Riverside Park. Good fund raiser for the club. Wearing an Easter bonnet and/or vintage attire would help to enhance our Parade. 39th Annual EASTER PARADE - Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009 As I am sitting down to write this, it is a month from Easter and it is -15 degrees outside. Will this winter never end? Last year, Easter fell on March 23rd, and if it came on the same date this year, I'm pretty certain that we would not be parking on the grass at Riverside Park! I don't think too many of our members would have their cars out of the garage yet, either! So, we can count our lucky stars that Easter falls on April 12th this year and hopefully everything will be warm and green by then. Our traditional Easter Parade will commence, as usual, with a pancake breakfast at Westsyde Centennial Park from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The Parade will begin lining up at the Westsyde Shopping Centre at 11:00 AM (no need to be there before then) and will depart at the usual time of 1:00 PM -SHARP! Our feature marque this year will be Chevrolet Corvette and we are hoping at least three or four vintage Corvettes will be leading our Parade. The Parade will travel the usual route through Westsyde, the North Shore and through the downtown area to Riverside Park where the cars will remain on display for about an hour. The Park will also be the location for the suitcase swap meet and we ask that you throw some small vintage items in the trunk to offer for sale while the public views the cars. You never know you might just sell something and provide someone with that elusive part that they have been looking for! As usual, our Parade is restricted to stock vintage vehicles 25 years old or older (1984 and earlier) and must have current license and insurance or permit. For Sale signs, Street rods, kit cars and modified vehicles are not permitted in the Parade. There is no charge for V.C.C.C. members to enter the Parade, but non-members will be charged $5.00 per vehicle to cover the cost of the dash plaque. The Easter Parade is our second biggest function of the year and it takes many people to help bring it off. We have once again requested the assistance of the RCMP with traffic control but we also need some [10] of our members who are not driving in the Parade to assist with traffic control along Westsyde Road and with parking at Riverside Park. The ladies are also asked to help with the sale of coffee and cookies at Westsyde Shopping Centre and at the Park. A volunteer list will be passed around at the March 25th meeting or you can contact me at 250 573-5740 or [email protected] if you can assist. Let's make this the best Easter Parade ever! See you on Sunday April 12th. Dick Parkes A Thought to Remember until next time: “You can not get out of the hole by digging it deeper”.
