Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT The arrival of a Protestant mission in Ethiopia during the 1850s marks a turning point in the history of the Falashas. Up until this point, they lived relatively isolated in the country, unaffected and unaware of the existence of world Jewry. Following this period and especially from the beginning of the twentieth century, the attention of certain Jewish individuals and organisations was drawn to the Falashas. This contact initiated a period of external interference which would ultimately transform the Falashas, an Ethiopian phenomenon, into Ethiopian Jews, whose culture, religion and identity became increasingly connected with that of world Jewry. It is the purpose of this thesis to examine the external influences that implemented and continued the process of transformation in Falasha society which culminated in their eventual emigration to Israel.

    Henry de Monfreid (1879-1974) Solveig Conrad-Boucher Diplômée d'Histoire de l'art et de Lettres modernes Entré dans la légende comme l'un des derniers aventuriers des temps modernes, Henry de Monfreid succomba à l'appel du large à l'âge de 32 ans. Las de mener “la vie d'un monsieur quelconque de nos cités modernes”, déjà père de famille et avec de nombreux métiers à son actif, il donne un tour radicalement nouveau à son existence en s'embarquant seul en 1911 en direction de Djibouti. Loin du “carcan occidental”, il se soustrait alors définitivement à “l'obligation de la vie en troupeau”, et entame pour les trente années à venir une véritable épopée, le menant à l'intérieur des terres de la corne d'Afrique, mais aussi aux bords de la Mer Rouge et du golfe d'Aden, en passant par la Grèce, l'Inde, les Seychelles et plus tard encore, après son emprisonnement par les Anglais, le Kenya. Tour à tour négociant en peaux et en café, trafiquant d'armes, de perles et de haschisch, Henry de Monfreid “aime surtout aller vers l'inconnu”. Marin d'exception et avide d'horizons nouveaux, il finit par bâtir lui-même ses boutres mythiques destinés au commerce légal comme à la contrebande. Contrairement à ses rivaux, il n'en confie pas le commandement à des autochtones, mais prend lui-même la mer et règne en maître sur son équipage fasciné par cet homme blanc converti à l'Islam, sous le nom de Abd el-Haï, “l'esclave du vivant”.

Gallimard, 2014 cote: 60.202 Les abords du Bab el-Mandeb, pays de la Reine de Saba, mythiques pays de Pount et d'Ophir, pays de la myrrhe et de l'encens, du mimosa et du santal, ont de tout temps été une terre d'élection pour de grands aventuriers et, par voie de conséquence, ils ont inspiré la littérature d'aventures, genre pauvrement représenté dans les lettres françaises. Qu'il nous suffise de citer les noms de Rimbaud, de Joseph Kessel et d'Henry de Monfreid. On sait que les récits de ce dernier ont fait rêver les petits bourgeois casaniers et plus encore les adolescents en mal d'exotisme, et nous fumes du nombre. Le musée Monfreid à Ingrandes en Berry entretient son souvenir et plus récemment, en 2012, une exposition à la corderie royale de Rochefort (Henry de Monfreid, l'écume de l'aventure) a montré au public des documents divers, des souvenirs, des journaux de bord, des aquarelles. Comble de l'ironie pour un contrebandier notoire, l'exposition a aussi été présentée au musée des douanes de Bordeaux. Monfreid était entré en littérature relativement tard, sous l'influence de Joseph Kessel qui avait lu ses journaux de bord, puisqu'il avait 52 ans quand parut chez Grasset son premier roman Les secrets de la mer Rouge, (1931). Ce fut un succès immédiat qui lui valut le prix des Vikings l'année suivante.

    Jacques Desse « Figurant de toutes les pièces » La vie extraordinaire d’un « ami » de Rimbaud Massouah (gravure publiée en 1885) VIOL EN MER ROUGE Menant des recherches sur la photographie de Rimbaud à Aden en 1880, nous sommes tombés sur un curieux document, sagement rangé depuis près d’un siècle et demi dans les archives du Ministère des Affaires étrangères 1. Ce manuscrit ne concernait pas a priori la biographie de Rimbaud, mais nous a paru mériter d’être exhumé, à la fois à cause de son aspect croquignolesque et de son intérêt pour l’histoire des mœurs, en particulier celle de 2 l’homosexualité entre « coloniaux » et « indigènes » . 1 Le document a été découvert par Jeanne Caussé, et M. Jean-Jacques Lefrère a relevé que le nom du personnage principal apparaît dans la correspondance de Rimbaud. 2 Question éclairée par les recherches de Robert Aldrich (Colonialism and Homosexuality, 2003). L’affaire se déroule en 1873 à Massouah (Massawa), petit port de la Mer Rouge où étaient établis une poignée d’Européens, et où Rimbaud cherchera du travail en 1880, avant d’arriver à Aden. Il s’agit de la dénonciation par un habitant de la ville d’un vice- consul de France, pour viol… Les faits, racontés en détail, sont graves : le consul, M. de Sarzec, aurait usé de son autorité pour sodomiser de force l’un de ses débiteurs, et serait coutumier du fait ! La victime conclut : Je me trouve aujourd’hui déshonoré par cette action brutalle et hors de la nature. 3 Peu importe ici la véracité de ces accusations, qui ne sont d’ailleurs pas si rares au XIXe siècle, même si les traces écrites ont en général disparu 4.
