The Washington Park Fireproof Warehouse and Its Architect, Argyle E
Published by the Hyde Park Historical Society The Washington Park Fireproof Warehouse and its Architect, Argyle E. Robinson By Leslie Hudson building in Hyde Park is turning one Ahundred years old this year. This building doesn't call much attention to itself. Driving by you might notice its bright orange awning but, unless you have rented a space within it, you may never have stopped to study the structure. But the next time you pass by, do stop-it's a unique and important building that deserves a good long look. It is the Hyde Park Self Storage building at 5155 Sou th Cottage Grove Avenue, originally called the Washington Park Fireproof Warehouse. Construction of the Washington Park Fireproof Warehouse began in 1905 during a period when many household storage buildings were being erected in Chicago, especially in its southern residential areas. Other warehouses built during this storage building heyday were once located nearby on Cottage Grove and Drexel Avenues. Although these other warehouses have been demolished, the Washington Park Fireproof Warehouse survives, and even continues to operate as a storage warehouse-its original function. And, thanks to the building's sturdy design and construction, and careful stewardship by its owners over the years, the building's original exterior has The Washington Park Fireproof Warehouse in 1905. The building doubled in size and remained intact. Science and the Public Interest an Open Letter to President-Elect Trump and the 115Th Congress
Science and the Public Interest An Open Letter to President-Elect Trump and the 115th Congress Scientific knowledge has played a critical role in making the United States a powerful and prosperous nation and improving the health and well-being of Americans and people around the world. From disease outbreaks to climate change to national security to technology innovation, people benefit when our nation’s policies are informed by science unfettered by inappropriate political or corporate influence. To build on this legacy and extend the benefits of science to all people, including Americans who have been left behind, the federal government must support and rely on science as a key input for crafting public policy. Policy makers and the public alike require access to high-quality scientific information to serve the public interest. There are several actions Congress and the Trump administration should take to strengthen the role that science plays in policy making. First, creating a strong and open culture of science begins at the top. Federal agencies should be led by officials with demonstrated track records of respecting science as a critical component of decision making. Further, recognizing that diversity makes science stronger, administration officials should welcome and encourage all scientists regardless of religious background, race, gender, or sexual orientation. Second, Congress and the Trump administration should ensure our nation’s bedrock public health and environmental laws—such as the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act—retain a strong scientific foundation, and that agencies are able to freely collect and draw upon scientific data to effectively carry out statutory responsibilities established by these laws. -

MIT Libraries Oral History Project Interview Dr. Caroline Herzenberg May 9, 1992 Chicago, Illinois This is an interview with Caroline Herzenberg on Saturday May 9, 1992 in her home. To start out can we discuss some biographical information? Where you were born, when you were born... I was born in East Orange, New Jersey on March 25, 1932. And when I was about three or four years old, my family moved to Oklahoma. It was the depression. My mother and father were out of work and so they went out to Oklahoma to live with his sister. Well, not to live with her, but a family member that could provide some support and help people get oriented. So, I grew up mostly in Oklahoma. I don't remember hardly anything from New Jersey. You started school in Oklahoma? That's right, public school. What was your parent's work? Well, a good deal of the time, while I was a kid, they were unemployed. My mother apparently had worked in office work before I was born. My father was in the import-export business. And she was some sort of, I guess what would now be considered a fast track young person in New York. Came down from a farm in Vermont and was enjoying the big city, but when the depression hit, they were both out of work. -
We Study the History of Science, and of Physics In
We study the history of science, and of physics in particular, organized at the Baltimore and San Francisco national APS delighting in the world’s magnificent order (and chaos). We take meetings that same year. The first Newsletter had editorials, pleasure in viewing the gradually increasing knowledge of nature announcements of history conferences, grants, job opportunities, and in the occasional flight of genius. But there are practical goals obituaries, queries, reports on recent conferences, seven pages of as well. We learn from this study, for ourselves and for our summaries of recent books and articles, and other news. I was students, how physics has really been done, as opposed to the surprised to discover that it also had, beginning on the front page, polished (and often sanitized) published versions. After the War Women in Physics in the United States Ruth H. Howes Caroline Herzenberg This book is about women in physics in America in the immediate aftermath of World War II. Physics has always been a male-dominated field that has posed challenges for women working in the profession. This was especially true in the United States after World War II when the U.S. government sought to make more job openings available for war veterans by undertaking a publicity campaign that encouraged women who had entered the workplace during the war to leave their jobs and return to their homes to care for their husbands and families. But a number of remarkable women managed to continue working by developing and using a wide variety of strategies to maintain their careers in the diverse environments that supported physics research. In this new book, we tell many of their stories and demonstrate the strategies they used to survive as physicists...strategies which are still applicable today. Their stories range from Nobel Laureates who engaged in outstanding scientific research to women who were instrumental in developing physics education in the United States. They worked in the new National Laboratories, the rapidly growing research universities, smaller colleges (including particularly women’s colleges), new industries, astrophysics and the birth of space science and NASA, and led the new area of health physics. The book is aimed first at younger women who may be interested in becoming physicists, particularly high school students, undergraduates and junior employees in their first jobs after completing their degrees. -

Survey Details Page 1 Each year the City of Richland receives funds from the room tax imposed upon hotels and motels located within the City. These funds can be retained by the City or can be expended for a narrow range of projects and activities established by State law. To be considered for funding, proposals must meet criteria as established in State law (RCW 67.28.1815) and prohibits use of tax receipts for any other purposes. State law requires these funds be: “…used solely for the purpose of paying all or any part of the cost of tourism promotion, acquisition of tourism‐related facilities, or operation of tourism‐related facilities…” Tourism promotion is defined in RCW 67.28.080 as “…activities and expenditures designed to increase tourism, including but not limited to advertising, publicizing, or otherwise distributing information for the purpose of attracting and welcoming tourists; developing strategies to expand tourism; operating tourism promotion agencies; and funding marketing of special events and festivals designed to attract tourists.” In addition, City Council policy requires that proposals comply with the following criteria: 1 1. 2000-2001 Annual Report
Dear Colleagues and Friends of the Woodruff School: While preparing this report, the tragic events of terrorism occurred on September 11th. They put a different perspective on everything we do. It is hard for me to comprehend how anyone can hate others with the vengeance shown by the terrorists. All the world suffers from such actions. Our hearts go out to all who have suffered the loss of loved ones in these tragic events. In spite of the events of September 11th, the Woodruff School had another great year. We recently learned that the ranking of our undergraduate program went up again. We are now ranked 5th in the country according to U.S. News & World Report. Ten years ago, we were ranked at best 11th, possibly 14th or lower. Academic reputations are slow to change, and we are very pleased with the recognition we are receiving for our outstanding programs. The most important event of the past year was the completion of the Georgia Tech Capital Campaign. Our goal was to raise $30 million for the Woodruff School. Through the outstanding efforts of our two development officers, Connie Parish and Caroline Wood, we exceeded that amount by nearly fifteen percent, having raised $34,605,978. There were times during the Campaign when I thought the original goal was unattainable, but the generosity of alumni and friends of the Woodruff School and the hard work on the part of many people at Tech helped us exceed that goal. These funds and the previous generosity of others, such as George Woodruff, make it possible for us to go the extra mile and do the special things that make our program truly outstanding. -
