The shack he aimed at absorbed the shots to no greater effect than if they’d all missed, except for a tinkle of glass now and then when a bullet nicked a shard left in the window frame. Out of ammunition, he sat on the running board beside me. I could feel his disgust. “It’s a mighty sorry soldier what leaves a weapon in the dirt like that. It’d serve you right if they come yelling for blood out’a that bun- ker with guns blazing and your barrel’s clogged up.” “I don’t feel good, I told you.” “Humpteen jillion times, ‘s’all. That’s humpteen jillion and one.” He reloaded his rifl e. Damaged cars lay all around—some turned on one side, others upside down, still others demolished beyond recognition. Many had bullet holes that spider-webbed the glass of several windows. The West Texas sun hammered our heads like nails. Heat off the metal truck body felt hot as off a stovetop. Lead singer, guitarist, and figurehead Jeffrey Lee Pierce fits in easily with Tthe genius songwriting of Arthur Lee (Love), Chris Hillman (Byrds), and John Doe and Exene (X). Unfortunately, neither he nor his band achieved the notoriety of his fellow luminary Angelinos. From 1979 to 1996, Jeffrey manned the Gun Club ship through thick and mostly thin. Understandably, the initial Fire of Love and Miami lineup of Ward Dotson (guitar), Rob Ritter (bass), Jeffrey Lee Pierce (vocals/ guitar) and Terry Graham (drums) remains the most beloved; setting the spooky, blues-punk template for future Gun Club releases. At the time of its release, Fire of Love was heralded by East Coast critics as one of the best albums of 1981.

  • An Experiment in Disorder
ABSTRACT AN EXPERIMENT IN DISORDER This collection of short stories will focus on the effect of history, memory, and oral traditions on cultural identity but will also focus on identity in general. The intent of this book is to examine identity through generations and time. The collection will introduce the Olivera family and follow with a few stories of this family. The collection will infuse magical realism and introduce the oral tradition of “The People that Drift,” who appear on several occasions and throughout the collection. The characters battle with inclusion and exclusion, an in-betweeness that allows them to wonder about their place. The characters struggle with the issue of social acceptance and contradiction from the hierarchy of power that, at times, accepts their culture but can dismiss it just as easily. The characters question their history, memory, and oral traditions and wonder if what they’ve heard from their culture and traditions are truthful and not based on lies. Does a culture, throughout their history, memory, and oral traditions, tell lies in order to survive, thus, effecting identity? Rolando Paez May 2013 AN EXPERIMENT IN DISORDER by Rolando Paez A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in the College of Arts and Humanities California State University, Fresno May 2013 APPROVED For the Department of English: We, the undersigned, certify that the thesis of the following student meets the required standards of scholarship, format, and style of the university and the student's graduate degree program for the awarding of the master's degree.
