    An historical tract in Irish relating to the confederate wars in Ireland PETER SMITH (Ulster University) An historical tract in Irish Abstract The hitherto unpublished historical tract which is presented here was written by a Fermanagh scholar called Conchabhar Ó Luinín during the period c. 1652–1700. It affords us a unique insight into Irish feelings about the Confederate Wars in Ireland. Ó Luinín shares with us his personal reflections on the campaign in the first section of the tract before proceeding to list in the subsequent sections the battles fought and the names of the eminent Irish soldiers killed in combat. The text has survived in fragmentary form among the O’Conor Papers and is preserved in Dublin, Royal Irish Academy B i 1a (Catalogue Number 1078). Introduction The manuscript Preserved in Royal Irish Academy manuscript B i 1a (Catalogue Number 1078)1 is a fragmentary historical tract that appears to have been written within about fifty years of the end of the Confederate Wars in Ireland.2 The tract forms part of a miscellany of materials that has been assembled under the title: ‘MS. Fragments, O’Conor Papers, etc.’ The catalogue description states: Mainly 18th cent. These fragmentary sections of MSS have been wrapped separately, and numbered in pencil by the present cataloguer. Nos. 3–7, though not all by the same hand, were originally part of the same MS. Nos. 4–6 are in the handwriting of Conchubhar Úa Luinín, see signature in 4.3 1 E. The club's first CLUB FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS 2001 appearance in a Senior Club All-Ireland Final. The team in the historic position was the Ladies Senior Football side managed by Bill Daly with Mark Maga- hran, Shane Keane and Elaine Keane (medic) which went down to Donough- more of Cork in the AIB final. The occasion was a truly memorable one with the club turning out in force with over 1,000 members and supporters pre- sent. Earlier in the season the team has suc- cessfully defended their Dublin champi- onship title first won in 2000 when Garda were overcome and added the league for good measure. The Leinster Championship campaign opened a comprehensive win over Rath- cline in Lanesboro. It followed with a thrilling draw with Shelmelier of Wexford in Hollymount and the stage was set for an epic voyage to the All-Ireland final. As chapter one illustrates, through a review of the historiography of Irish kingship, the discussion of ‘power’ has, hitherto, amounted to a conversation about the ways in which the power of the greater Irish kings grew over the course of the eleventh and twelfth centuries (at the expense of the lesser kings). Engaging with the rich corpus of international literature on power, as is done in chapter one, reveals the sheer complexity and vicissitudes of ‘power’ as a concept. Many writers and thinkers on the subject have identified resistance as a means through which to view power relations, and it is along these lines that the rest of the thesis runs. Chapters three and four are concerned with the subject of resistance; with regicide and revolt, respectively. Both mine the Irish annals.
