Collection Description

Biographical Note Judson “Jake” C. Ward was born on April 13, 1912 in Marietta, Georgia. He attended Emory University as an undergraduate from 1929 to 1933. He continued at Emory as a master’s student in history, teaching concurrently at Fitzgerald High School in Fitzgerald, Georgia beginning in 1934. In 1937 Ward completed his master’s degree and began doctoral work in history at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. After completing coursework, he taught at South Georgia Teachers College from 1939 to 1940 and Birmingham-Southern College from 1940 to 1942 while concurrently pursuing his doctorate. In 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving at Fort Bragg from 1942 to 1943. From 1943 to 1946 he taught at the Military Academy at West Point. In 1947 Ward became President of Georgia Teachers College. In 1948 he briefly served as Assistant Chancellor of the University System of Georgia before becoming Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University later that year. He served in this role until 1957, when he became Vice President and Dean of Faculties. From 1962 to 1963, Ward, along with Henry Bowden and Goodrich White, filled the vacant University president’s role as the so-called “Troika,” before Sanford Atwood was appointed University president in 1963. In 1970 Ward became Executive Vice President and Dean of Faculties, retiring in 1979. In 1985 he became Dean of Alumni, a position he held until the end of his life in 2009. Along with Ward’s work at Emory, he also taught a Sunday school class at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church and collected materials on Georgia and Emory history.

Scope and Content Note Papers include correspondence; files collected on Emory University history, Georgia history, and other general subjects; student materials; writings and speeches; and audiovisual materials. Series 1: Correspondence includes incoming and out-going correspondence from 1923 to 2006, as well as a small selection of named correspondence files with friends of Ward. Notable contents include Ward’s Ward Weakly, a weekly letter to his immediate family facetiously styled as a newsletter, sent in the 1930s and 40s. Series 2: Emory University history files contain files on Emory University history collected by Ward. These files include materials documenting events taking place during Ward’s career as administrator and Dean of Alumni, such as the controversy over the discriminatory harassment policy and the Sabrina Collins affair. The series also contains files he collected on earlier University history.
