RESEARCH BACKGROUND Croton Media (克顿传媒) is a Chinese TV production company noted for its content strategy developed from research studies on digitalization. My Sunshine (何以笙萧默), one of Croton Media’s notable TV series, won a very high rating on terrestrial TV in 2015. It got hundreds of millions views on the first day of its launch on the Internet, breaking the record. Soon after its launch, the web search query for Wallace Chung (钟汉良), one of the leading actors, rose up to the top, beating the most popular Korean stars at that time. In May, a Korean TV station, MBC, acquired the programming rights, adding Korean subtitles, and aired this series, which set a record of being the first Chinese TV series acquired and aired by Korean terrestrial TV stations. In terms of network broadcast, because it adapted from classic online novel written by popular writer Gu Man and she has also anticipated the script creation, so the drama has remarkable online attention since it plays. On the first day, the network broadcast quantity breakthrough hundred million in a single day, which refreshes the record. In that year on January 20, it became the first series to breakthrough 300 million in a single day, and in the ending day, the amount of play are 355.52 million times. China during the Tang-Song Interregnum, 878–978 This book challenges the long-established structure of Chinese history around dynasties, adopting a more “organic” approach which emphasises cultural and economic trends that transcend arbitrary dynastic boundaries. It argues that with the collapse of the Tang court and northern control over the holistic empire in the last decades of the ninth century, the now-autonomous kingdoms that filled the political vacuum in the south responded with a burst of innovative energy that helped set the stage for the economic and cultural transformations of the following Song dynasty. Moreover, it argues that these transformations and this economic and cultural innovation deeply affected the subsequent model of holistic empire which continues right up to the present and that therefore the interregnum century of division left a critically important legacy. Vol. 27, No. 3 (2010) 037101 Thin-Thick Film Transitions on a Planar Solid Surface: A Density Functional Study * YU Yang-Xin(u养&)**, LI Ying-Feng(o=¸), ZHENG Yuan-Xiang(x远翔) State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084 (Received 29 October 2009) A weighted density functional theory is proposed to predict the surface tension and thin-thick film transition of a Lennard{Jones fluid on a planar solid surface. The underlying density functional theory for theLennard{ Jones fluid at low temperature is based on a modified fundamental measure theory for the hard-core repulsion, a Taylor expansion around zero-bulk-density for attraction, and a correlation term evaluated by the weighted density approximation with a weight function of the Heaviside step function. The predicted surface tension and thin-thick film transition agree well with the results from the Monte Carlo simulations, better than thosefrom alternative approaches. For the Ar/CO2 system, the prewetting line has been calculated. The predicted reduced surface critical temperature is about 0.97, and the calculated wetting temperature is below the triple-point temperature. This is in agreement with the experimental observation. “The Task is Hers: ” Going Global, Margaret Sanger’s Visit to China in 1922 by Mirela David, Ph.D., University of Saskatchewan Abstract: In 1922 Margaret Sanger visited China, enjoying great attention from Chinese social reformers for her feminism and eugenic ideas on birth control. This transnational project probes the dynamics of the intellectual encounter between western theorists such as Sanger and Chinese intellectuals such as Hu Shi. Sanger’s trip echoed images of China as a poster child for poverty and overpopulation in dire need of contraception, and it also ignited a debate in the Chinese press on the eugenic quality of birth control. The insertion of eugenics into other types of debates allowed a deeper discussion of possible solutions for China’s social problems to emerge. I investigate the intersections and explore the tensions between Malthusianism and eugenics, and feminism and eugenics as well as the local specificities of these debates and the translation and reception of Sanger’s speeches. Chinese male intellectuals considered women’s reproduction both in relation to women’s individual bodies, as well as its repercussions for the future of the Chinese nation. These latest considerations were primordial in considering the political potential of birth control advocacy in relation to Marxism and nationalism.
