Thursday 12 March - 7.00pm Tickets: £14, 2hrs 40mins (inc interval), cert 12A La Traviata Recorded at the London Coliseum A tragic and resonant tale of society and morality, Verdi’s masterpiece combines compelling characters with powerful, moving and instantly recognisable melodies, making it one of the most emotionally engaging and popular operas of all time. With contemporary staging and a running time of less than two hours this English National Opera production is ideal for newcomers to opera. Friday 13 March - 7.30pm Tickets: £14; Students £10 1hr 50mins, Sung & surtitled in English Swan Lake Live from the Royal Opera House Join us for what is surely the greatest of all romantic ballets, beamed in live via satellite. Swan Lake is a heart-rending tribute to the power of love, with a Tchaikovsky score that has inspired generations of dancers. This Royal Ballet production Anthony Dowell returns to an authentic version of the 1895 choreography. The design is an inspired blend of historical accuracy and gothic fantasy. Tuesday 17 March - 7.15 pm Tickets: £15, 16 & under £8 3hrs (inc 2 intervals) Hamlet Recorded at Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester Following its sell-out run in Manchester this critically acclaimed production of Shakespeare's iconic tragedy comes to the big screen at Number 8. In this stripped-back, fresh and fast-paced version, Maxine Peake creates a Hamlet for now, giving a performance hailed as, “delicately ferocious” by The Guardian and, “a milestone Hamlet” by the Manchester Evening News. Hamlet explodes with ideas and is the ultimate story of loyalty, love, betrayal, murder and madness. This groundbreaking production, directed by Sarah Frankcom, was the Royal Exchange’s fastest-selling show in a decade. Alongside Peake as Hamlet a number of other roles, including Polonious and Rosencrantz, are also played by women. Monday 23 March & Thursday 23 April - 7.00pm Tickets: £14, Students £10, 16 & under £10 3hrs 15mins (inc interval) Cropthorne with Charlton CE First School One Night in Spooksville Poor Sophie, her night’s sleep is being ruined by nightmares. Frank, the friendly phantom offers to help by giving her and her brother Sam a night out in Spooksville. During their adventure the children encounter the inhabitants of famous Spooksville landmarks such as the Horror Hotel, Crazy Café, Ghoul School and Skeleton Surgery and end up boogying away to the latest sounds at the famous Dark Disco. Will Sophie be able to sleep soundly in her bed from now on? Come along and make up your own mind… These shows are a Private Hire organised by Cropthorne school. Wednesday 25 March - 1.30pm; Thursday 26 March - 7.00pm Tickets £7, 16 & under £5 Gigspanner Peter Knight’s Gigspanner has been hailed by Songlines magazine as, ‘another milestone in folk’s rebirth of cool’, although to classify these three virtuoso performers purely as folk musicians is to seriously undersell them. Top quality British traditional music is to be expected from Steeleye Span’s legendary fiddle player but Gigspanner’s music style flirts with Eastern European, French, Cajun, African and even Aboriginal influences. Peter has accrued a lifetimes worth of accolades across a career spanning two folk revivals and his musicianship is further enhanced here by the flawless playing of Roger Flack on guitar and Vincent Salzfaas on congas and djembe. Friday 27 March - 7.30pm Tickets: £15 2hrs 10mins (inc interval) Sea Legs Puppet Theatre presents The Ugly Duckling Float downstream with the Story Man, in this gentle, musical adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic tale. Meet a host of colourful characters, as they run the troubled duckling out of the farmyard into the lonely wilderness. Journey through the seasons as the hapless creature finds his way in a hostile world. But do not worry! In a grand musical finale to melt even the coldest of hearts, a happy ending awaits our humble hero. Set on the banks of a magical river, brilliant storytelling, fantastic puppets and a delightful score make this a fabulous show for little ones and their families. Suitable for age 3+. The great Arthur Miller confronts the American dream in this dark and passionate tale set in an Italian neighbourhood in 1950s Brooklyn. Longshoreman Eddie Carbone welcomes his Sicilian cousins to the land of freedom, but when one of them falls for his niece, they discover that freedom comes at a price. Directed by Ivo van Hove.
