Number 8 Spring 2015 Spring arrives hot on the heels of the film awards season. Our programme includes many nominees such as Whiplash (15), American Sniper (15) and Boyhood (15) which may well be award winners by the time you read this along with the eagerly anticipated The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (PG). Music highlights include a concert series from the acclaimed Orchestra of the Swan, top quality British folk from Peter Knight’s Gigspanner and the tribute concert Patsy Cline & Friends. A number of spectacular operas and ballets will be beamed in via satellite, including the new production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance directed by Mike Leigh. For theatre lovers we have Wasters a dark comedy by Nick Wilkes, the latest from National Theatre Live beamed in via satellite and The Ugly Duckling waddling in to entertain the children. Our regular Chance to Dance classes continue plus there’s an opportunity to get involved in the Quiet Revolution and perform at Pershore Carnival. Plenty to put a spring in your step! Emma Bangham Programme Manage, Number 8 Events Love’s Labour’s Won Live from the RSC, Stratford-upon-Avon Shakespeare’s comic romance plays out amidst the high spirits of a post-war house party in Autumn 1918. As memories of the trenches give way to parties, Claudio and Hero fall in love, while Benedick and Beatrice reignite their altogether more combative courtship. Christopher Luscombe directs this comedy better known as Much Ado About Nothing but performed here under the title possibly given to it during Shakespeare’s lifetime. Beamed in live via satellite. With superb harmonies, perfect timing and an astonishing quality and purity of tone Treorchy have toured extensively and have gained an international reputation for excellence. Join us to experience the enthralling beauty of this legendary Welsh musical institution. Saturday 7 March - 7.30pm Tickets: £18 2hr 30mins (inc interval) The W Factor Final 2015 The ever-popular W Factor offers the opportunity for youngsters age 11-18 to showcase their singing, music, dance, drama, artistic or film-making talents. Following auditions across Wychavon in January finalists will take to the stage at Number 8 for this fantastic evening of performances. This event is a Private Hire organised by Wychavon District Council. Monday 9 March - 7.30pm Tickets: £5 National Theatre Live presents Behind the Beautiful Forevers Recorded at the National Theatre, London Meera Syal (The Kumars, Goodness Gracious Me) returns to the National Theatre in this new play by David Hare based on the book by Katherine Boo. India is surging with global ambition. Beyond the luxury hotels surrounding Mumbai airport is a makeshift slum full of people with plans to escape it. Their schemes are fragile; global recession threatens trade, and another slum-dweller is about to make an accusation that will destroy herself and shatter the neighbourhood. Directed by Rufus Norris. Thursday 12 March - 7.00pm Tickets: £14, 2hrs 40mins (inc interval), cert 12A La Traviata Recorded at the London Coliseum A tragic and resonant tale of society and morality, Verdi’s masterpiece combines compelling characters with powerful, moving and instantly recognisable melodies, making it one of the most emotionally engaging and popular operas of all time. With contemporary staging and a running time of less than two hours this English National Opera production is ideal for newcomers to opera. Friday 13 March - 7.30pm Tickets: £14; Students £10 1hr 50mins, Sung & surtitled in English Swan Lake Live from the Royal Opera House Join us for what is surely the greatest of all romantic ballets, beamed in live via satellite. Swan Lake is a heart-rending tribute to the power of love, with a Tchaikovsky score that has inspired generations of dancers. This Royal Ballet production Anthony Dowell returns to an authentic version of the 1895 choreography. The design is an inspired blend of historical accuracy and gothic fantasy. Tuesday 17 March - 7.15 pm Tickets: £15, 16 & under £8 3hrs (inc 2 intervals) Hamlet Recorded at Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester Following its sell-out run in Manchester this critically acclaimed production of Shakespeare's iconic tragedy comes to the big screen at Number 8. In this stripped-back, fresh and fast-paced version, Maxine Peake creates a Hamlet for now, giving a performance hailed as, “delicately ferocious” by The Guardian and, “a milestone Hamlet” by the Manchester Evening News. Hamlet explodes with ideas and is the ultimate story of loyalty, love, betrayal, murder and madness. This groundbreaking production, directed by Sarah Frankcom, was the Royal Exchange’s fastest-selling show in a decade. Alongside Peake as Hamlet a number of other roles, including Polonious and Rosencrantz, are also played by women. Frank, the friendly phantom offers to help by giving her and her brother Sam a night out in Spooksville. During their adventure the children encounter the inhabitants of famous Spooksville landmarks such as the Horror Hotel, Crazy Café, Ghoul School and Skeleton Surgery and end up boogying away to the latest sounds at the famous Dark Disco. Will Sophie be able to sleep soundly in her bed from now on? Come along and make up your own mind… These shows are a Private Hire organised by Cropthorne school. Wednesday 25 March - 1.30pm; Thursday 26 March - 7.00pm Tickets £7, 16 & under £5 Gigspanner Peter Knight’s Gigspanner has been hailed by Songlines magazine as, ‘another milestone in folk’s rebirth of cool’, although to classify these three virtuoso performers purely as folk musicians is to seriously undersell them. Top quality British traditional music is to be expected from Steeleye Span’s legendary fiddle player but Gigspanner’s music style flirts with Eastern European, French, Cajun, African and even Aboriginal influences. Peter has accrued a lifetimes worth of accolades across a career spanning two folk revivals and his musicianship is further enhanced here by the flawless playing of Roger Flack on guitar and Vincent Salzfaas on congas and djembe. Friday 27 March - 7.30pm Tickets: £15 2hrs 10mins (inc interval) Sea Legs Puppet Theatre presents The Ugly Duckling Float downstream with the Story Man, in this gentle, musical adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic tale. Meet a host of colourful characters, as they run the troubled duckling out of the farmyard into the lonely wilderness. Journey through the seasons as the hapless creature finds his way in a hostile world. But do not worry! In a grand musical finale to melt even the coldest of hearts, a happy ending awaits our humble hero. Set on the banks of a magical river, brilliant storytelling, fantastic puppets and a delightful score make this a fabulous show for little ones and their families. Suitable for age 3+. Adapted by Rob Ashman and Matthew Hart Tuesday 31 March - 2.30pm Tickets: £8.50, 16 & under £7 45mins + 15mins ‘Meet the Puppets’ National Theatre Live presents A View from the Bridge Recorded at Wyndham's Theatre, London Don’t miss a stellar cast led by Mark Strong (The Imitation Game; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) in the Young Vic’s ‘magnetic, electrifying, astonishingly bold’ production which was the Evening Standard, The Guardian and The Independent’s top theatre pick of 2014. The great Arthur Miller confronts the American dream in this dark and passionate tale set in an Italian neighbourhood in 1950s Brooklyn. Longshoreman Eddie Carbone welcomes his Sicilian cousins to the land of freedom, but when one of them falls for his niece, they discover that freedom comes at a price. Directed by Ivo van Hove. Thursday 2 April - 7.00pm Tickets: £14, Students £10, 16 & Under £10 2hrs 30mins, cert 12A Orchestra of the Swan Tchaikovsky - The Great Romantic Mozart Divertimento K136 Tchaikovsky Andante Cantabile Arensky Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings Tchaikovsky revered Mozart above all composers and although his Serenade for Strings has hints of Russian romanticism, at its heart is a tribute to Mozart’s classical style. The Arensky is another tribute from one composer to another and an enchanting work in its own right. Under the direction of David Curtis, Orchestra of the Swan has achieved national recognition for outstanding performances, innovative programming and engaging presentation. Tuesday 14 April - 7.00pm Tickets: £12, 16 & under £10 1hr 30mins National Theatre Live presents The Hard Problem Live from the National Theatre, London Acclaimed playwright Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love) returns to the National Theatre with his highly-anticipated new play, directed by Nicholas Hytner (Othello, One Man, Two Guvnors).
