Outdoor Education Program at OVS Upper campus. 2017 / 2018 *Dates and locations are subject to change. Pine mountain bouldering / hiking - October 6th - 8th Students will venture to Pine Mountain and Reyes Peak for hiking bouldering and introduction into rock climbing techniques. Stargazing / hiking Mt. Pinos - October 13th - 15th Students will explore the higher elevations of Ventura County at Mt. Pinos, and study the night sky. In addition to stargazing through two OVS telescopes, This trip will be a hiking opportunity for exploration of some great trails through the pine forested peaks close to home. Backpacking Eastern Sierra - October 22nd - 25th Students will spend 3-4 days backpacking in the Eastern Sierras near the Rock Creek drainage visiting high alpine lakes, and investigating some of the Phenomenal geology of the surrounding areas. Surfing Southern California Refugio - November 4th - 6th In an attempt to strengthen our water program at OVS, students will have numerous opportunities throughout the year to visit local surf breaks and learn about the open ocean. Students on this trip will visit a local beach, and have the opportunity to Surf and stand up paddle board. Santa Rosa Backpacking November 10th - 12th Channel Islands National Park is just off the coast from OVS campus. Each year, a group of OVS students visit Santa Cruz island during the all-school camping trips that take place the 2nd week of school. On this trip, students will visit the more remote Santa Rosa Island, and participate in sea kayaking, snorkeling and backpacking. Climbing Joshua Tree National Park January 21st - 24th Students will travel to the Mojave Desert and visit Joshua Tree National Park. There they will participate in a variety of rock climbing and bouldering activities. Mountain Biking Los Padres / Sespe February 9th - 10th OVS Students will have the opportunity to ride mountain bikes on several of the numerous paths and trails in the Los Padres National Forest. Prior mtn. Biking experience is required. Honors Trip February 26th - March 2nd Location and activity information to follow Skiing Mammoth March 15th - 18th Upper School’s annual ski trip to Mammoth Mountain provides a great environment for beginners as well as a challenge to those with prior experience. Students have the opportunity to Ski or Snowboard and explore an iconic ski resort in the Sierra Nevada Mountains Canyonlands National Park March 21st - 25th In the trip to the Utah desert, students will be hiking and navigating the wondrous landscape of Canyonlands National park, where erosional process have been ongoing for millions of years to create incredible features in the rocks. Students will have the opportunity to practice some climbing and bouldering techniques, in addition to hiking San Onofre Surf Trip March 31st - April 2nd OVS water enthusiasts will travel a few hours south the Surf at the famous breaks in San Onofre, CA. Other water activities will be available including Stand Up Paddle boarding and Bodysurfing. Senior Camping Trip April 20th - 22th Graduating Seniors will have one final escape into the wilderness before their time at OVS is done. The location of this trip will be determined closer to the date of the trip. Mt. Pinos Stargazing May 11th - 13th This spring offering will be very similar to the fall Mt. Pinos Trip. Kern River Rafting May 18th - 20th OVS students travel to the closest drainage within the Sierra Nevada Mountains and will spend two days whitewater rafting. This trip will be run through a professional guiding service based in Kernville, CA, and will require an additional per student charge to cover trip expenses. .
