Those who died are listed by date of death within each theatre of war. Due note should be taken of the dates of death particularly in the last ten days of March 1918, where several are notional. Home dates may be based on registration data, which means that the year in 1 question may be earlier than that given.

    ROADS IN THE BATTLE DISTRICT: AN INTRODUCTION AND AN ESSAY ON TURNPIKES In historic times travel outside one’s own parish was difficult, and yet people did so, moving from place to place in search of work or after marriage. They did so on foot, on horseback or in vehicles drawn by horses, or by water. In some areas, such as almost all of the Battle district, water transport was unavailable. This remained the position until the coming of the railways, which were developed from about 1800, at first very cautiously and in very few districts and then, after proof that steam traction worked well, at an increasing pace. A railway reached the Battle area at the beginning of 1852. Steam and the horse ruled the road shortly before the First World War, when petrol vehicles began to appear; from then on the story was one of increasing road use. In so far as a road differed from a mere track, the first roads were built by the Roman occupiers after 55 AD. In the first place roads were needed for military purposes, to ensure that Roman dominance was unchallenged (as it sometimes was); commercial traffic naturally used them too. A road connected Beauport with Brede bridge and ran further north and east from there, and there may have been a road from Beauport to Pevensey by way of Boreham Street. A Roman road ran from Ore to Westfield and on to Sedlescombe, going north past Cripps Corner. There must have been more. BEFORE THE TURNPIKE It appears that little was done to improve roads for many centuries after the Romans left.

    349 Sunday Bus – latest (good!) news (A message from Campaign for Better Transport East Sussex): The Sunday bus linking Hastings – Sedlescombe – Staplecross – Bodiam – Sandhurst – Hawkhurst and Cranbrook will continue to run ‘through to the end of September’. This good news was confirmed last week by Stagecoach. The ‘summer’ Sunday service re-started in March 2017 after a gap of three years and the passenger numbers through last summer were ‘encouraging’. A much longer period had elapsed since the last winter service ran.To the credit of all parties, following last summer’s service reintroduction, the 349 has run right through this winter (as I write, temperatures have dived from spring levels in mid February to sub-arctic conditions as we reach March!). Users have been hugely grateful. Passengers on the Sunday bus have included individuals and small groups of all ages, making journeys for a whole range of purposes: going to work, for walks, lunches, to visitor attractions, church, visiting friends and families – with a good sprinkling of domestic and international tourists. There are clearly ‘two way flows’ – both within the urban area of Hastings, and to, from and within the country areas right to the High Weald villages and towns of East Sussex and Kent. In all seasons, there were some passengers who took advantage of the connection in Cranbrook with Arriva service 5 to travel on towards Maidstone. The numbers of trips taken evidence the usefulness of the route to many, especially those who do not or cannot drive. Clearly, the main attractor on the route is Bodiam Castle (National Trust), while Bodiam station on the Kent and East Sussex Steam Railway is also a draw: these two between them attract around 300,000 visitors a year.

    EAST SUSSEX COUNTY COUNCIL – TRANSPORT & ENVIRONMENT Progress to date on Implementation of Lower Speed Limits in Rother District The Review of Rural Speed Limits in East Sussex (covering A and B-class roads and villages with existing limits in excess of 30mph) was originally phased over a four year programme from 2008/09 to 2011/12. This programme was based on the County’s 18 rural electoral divisions ranked in the order of their numbers of Killed and Seriously Injured (KSI) road casualties, so that those divisions with the worst crash records have been treated first. Progress to date in Rother District is as follows: 2008/09 No electoral divisions in Rother 2009/10 Battle & Crowhurst A2100 Starrs Green and Telham – extended 40mph speed limit Netherfield – 30mph limit on B2096, 40mph on Netherfield Road B2204 Catsfield Stream – 40mph speed limit Whatlington – 40mph limit Northern Rother Cripp’s Corner – B2089 & B2165, 30mph limit in village Swaile’s Green – B2089, 40mph limit Staplecross – B2165, 30mph limit in village 2010/11 Northern Rother A28 Newenden Bridge to Northiam – 40mph speed limit B2244 Sedlescombe – 50mph limit north of village These two schemes were the only ones to have been completed in Rother in 2010/11 before the Government’s announcement of ‘in-year’ grant cuts resulted in the remaining speed limit programme across the whole county being put on hold. The County Council is committed to the completion of this speed limit review project, but the remaining schemes will need to be rescheduled to match the available resources. The situation is very uncertain at present but it is hoped it will become a little clearer after the Government has announced its autumn spending review and we have a better idea of the levels of funding likely to be available in future years.

    Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP) Rother Catchment 1 Drainage and Wastewater Management Plans River Rother Catchment - DRAFT Strategic Context The Environment Agency has previously defined the River Basin District catchments in their River Basin Management Plans prepared in response to the European Union’s Water Framework Directive. These river basin catchments are based on the natural configuration of bodies of water (rivers, estuaries, lakes etc.) within a geographical area, and relate to the natural watershed of the main rivers. We are using the same catchment boundaries for our Level 2 DWMPs. A map of the Rother river basin catchment is shown in figure 1. Crown copyright Southern Water Services Limited 1000019426 2 Drainage and Wastewater Management Plans River Rother Catchment - DRAFT Overview of the River Rother Catchment The Rother catchment drains just over 982km2 of land in East Sussex and Kent, with the largest and longest river in the catchment being the River Rother. The catchment has a unique collection of river systems and man-made canals and includes the network of ditches, streams and sewers of the Romney Marsh and the 28 mile Royal Military Canal. The Rother rises near Rotherfield in Wealden district of East Sussex and flows for 35 miles through East Sussex and Kent to its mouth on Rye Bay on the English Channel.     Rother District Council Report to: Cabinet Date: 5 October 2020 Title: Public Spaces Protection Order (No1A) Report of: Richard Parker-Harding, Head of Service Environmental Services, Licensing and Community Safety Cabinet Member: Councillor Field Ward(s): All Purpose of Report: To recommend the making of a Public Spaces Protection Order to control dogs Decision Type: Key Officer Recommendation(s): It be RESOLVED: That following consultation with the East Sussex County Council, Police, Police and Crime Commissioner a Public Spaces Protection Order be made. Introduction 1. In 2016, the Council approved making a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) (No 1) to control dogs (Minute CB16/14 refers). This Order expires in January 2021. In June Cabinet authorised consultation with Town and Parish Councils (Minute CB20/09 refers). Two Parish Councils requested the Order be amended and public consultation on these amendments has been undertaken. 2. The current Order was first adopted in June 2008 (Minute CB08/13 refers) following extensive consultation with Parish and Town Councils and the public. Several iterations to the Order were considered prior to adoption, whereby it was felt a reasonable compromise had been achieved between the requirements of the public and the needs of dog owners. Iden Parish Council and Ewhurst Parish Council have proposed amendments. The Order with the proposed amendments is set out at Appendix A. Background to PSPOs can be found at Appendix C. Options 3. To approve the making of an amended Order, considering the proposals of the Parish Councils and the two objections to the amendments from Iden residents. Alternatively, to renew the existing Order for a further 3 years without any amendment.
