SERVICES WE PROVIDE EXPERIENCE RESEARCH - IRIM has research experience in a wide range of sectors, where professional and scientific approaches are applied. IRIM’s staff are experienced in designing and facilitating innovative and inter-disciplinary research projects, drawing 103 on both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data quality assurance is conducted at every stage in research projects, and the latest versions of statistical analysis software projects are employed. MONITORING AND EVALUATION - Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) projects make up around one third of IRIM’s portfolio. With an emphasis on evidence, and employing internationally accepted methodologies and methods, IRIM conducts independent analysis of the implementation of the government and the international organisations’ 70 projects and programmes. IRIM initiated the Mongolian Evaluation Network; making a commitment to integrate evaluation standards in Mongolia in collaboration with other projects members of the Network. TRAINING AND WORKSHOPS - IRIM’s training packages cover current research theories and methods and are enriched by the application of extensive experience in the field. IRIM provides training on various subjects, including: transparent budgeting, civic engagement, organisational capacity-building, and horizontal learning methods. IRIM employs participatory and interactive methodologies in workshops. 20 IRIM ensures success of the workshop (from beginning to end), developing training materials, conducting participants’ needs assessment, documenting all procedures projects of the workshops and conducting satisfaction surveys. This provides for continuous improvement of performance of workshops’ organization and facilitation. Investment in the education sector was the highest and held special government protection. By 1992, education spending dropped to 33% of NGP due to an economic crisis in the former Soviet Union, Mongolia’s principal economic partner. After the economic crisis, the Government of Mongolia (GOM) could only afford to invest in larger enterprises such as the livestock and crop sectors thus ignoring crucial issues in the social sector. This dramatically shrank social sector investment pushing it into crisis as well. Before 1992, the government spent 2,000 Togrog annually for each secondary school student, and 13,000 Togrog for each student enrolled in a higher education institution. 84.4% of Mongolian citizens had a secondary school education, while only 0.4% had higher education. At that time many countries had started paying exclusive attention to educational institutions, urging reform and restructuring.

Every drab apart- ment block had the same basic design with thick double doors and double- glazed windows. This environment was very different from my expectations of a Mongolia with no locks on brightly painted ger doors and sparse, expan- sive grasslands.

Box 479, Ulaanbaatar 210136, MONGOLIA ABSTRACT This paper presents an overview of surveys on geothermal energy that have been made in Mongolia to date and explores possibilities for its use. Mongolia has geothermal resources but geothermal utilization is not widely developed. Hot springs are though used for bathing, health resorts (balneology) and to a small amount for greenhouse heating. The main region of geothermal activity is Khangai, where there are 3 aimag (province) centres and 44 soum (village) centres, with approximately 241,000 people. Most of them are without electricity, using diesel generation in the evenings for 5-6 hours because of high oil costs. Coal and wood are used for heating. Using geothermal energy for heating, electrical generation and industrial purposes are the main incentives for developing a geothermal infrastructure in the rural areas of Mongolia. Bearing in mind that the Mongolian main gross domestic products come from animal husbandry, good possibilities are also to use geothermal energy for wool and cashmere washing and drying. 1. INTRODUCTION Mongolia is situated in the northern part of Central Asia, far from the oceans, on a high plateau surrounded by mountain ridges. The mountainous country’s mean elevation is 1580m above sea level. Mongolia consists of 22 aimags or province (approx. 50,000-110,000 people in each aimag), and each aimag consists of 12-22 soums (each soum or village has approx. 4,000-5,000 people).

    Excursion to Mongolia Geology, Mining, Soil, Gobi-Desert Plant Species, Agriculture, and Land Use 23. July 2018 to 07. Aug 2018 INTRODUCTION The 2018 Tour-Excursion in Mongolia will be hosted by our Mongolian specialists. Approximately 130 participants from Australia, Portugal, Spain, France, USA, Poland, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Vietnam, China, Malaysia and Mongolia have participated in our field trip since 2012. Students, researchers and teaching professionals from all over the world are invited. This tour may be interesting to specialists making their own or joint research with Mongolian colleagues, as well as to non-specialists wishing to get acquainted with Mongolian nature, history, and also habits and ways. The bus tour with camping stops (camping in tents, Ger- Camp) and visits of museums and famous historical sites is explained in English and German. This is already 6th year of the team organizes International Excursion to Mongolian countryside. The excursion focuses on Mongolian soil, Gobi-Desert plant species, agriculture and geology. The trip is adventurous. We will visit one of the biggest gold, copper, molybdenum mining companies in the world. Together with altitude and natural zones differences, we will drive approximately 3500 km through Mongolian beautiful landscape. We will make soil profiles during the excursion and describe the soil types. Plant species can be collected for herbarium after defining them. We are the initiators of Central Asian Soil Science Society (CASSS) in cooperation with Kirgiz and other Central Asian countries. Our soil scientist worked in European countries over 10 years and specialized in WRB soil classification. The geologist also has working experience in foreign countries such as USA and he is excellent at professional English language.
