The host institution, Trier University, has a focus on humanities and social sciences. However environmental sciences are strongly represented in the Faculty of Regional and Environmental Sciences, including the Department of Biogeography. -

© Deutsche Gesellschaft für Orthopterologie e.V.; download http://www.dgfo-articulata.de/; www.zobodat.at ARTICULATA 2013 28 (1/2): 41‒49 BIOLOGIE A gynandromorphous speckled bush-cricket, Leptophyes punctatissima (Bosc, 1792) [Orthoptera: Phaneropteridae], from Germany Günter Köhler & Grit Kunert Abstract In mid-August 2012, an adult gynander of the speckled bush-cricket, Leptophyes punctatissima (Bosc, 1792), was sampled in Jena/Thuringia. Externally, it is a nearly perfect half-sider, with normal male characters on the left and female characters on the right side. In the gynander the male pronotum, tegmen and subgenital plate as well as the female tegmen are slightly longer and the oviposi- tor (valves) shorter than in normal individuals. Internally, besides a full midgut several male accessory glands but no ovary structures were detected. From the original descriptions of gynanders of European Tettigonioidea (24 species in 3 families) aspects of sexual left/right-expression, sexual behaviour, and formation of inner reproductive organs are reviewed. Zusammenfassung Mitte August 2012 wurde in Jena/Thüringen eine gynandromorphe Imago der Punktierten Zartschrecke, Leptophyes punctatissima (Bosc, 1792), gefunden. Der äußeren Erscheinung nach ist es ein fast perfekter Halbseitenzwitter mit Männchen-Merkmalen auf der linken und Weibchen-Merkmalen auf der rechten Seite. Im Vergleich zu normalen Individuen der Region (7 ♂♂, 5 ♀♀) sind beim Gynander Pronotum, Tegmen und Subgenitalplatte der männlichen Hälfte sowie das Tegmen der weiblichen Hälfte etwas länger und die Ovipositorvalven etwas kürzer. Im Abdomen fanden sich neben einem gut gefüllten Mitteldarm zwar ak- zessorische Drüsen (♂), aber keine Ovariolen. Aus den Originalbeschreibungen von Gynandern europäischer Tettigonioidea (24 Arten in 3 Familien) werden Aspekte der sexuellen Links/Rechts-Ausprägung, des Sexualverhaltens und der Ausbildung innerer Geschlechtsorgane recherchiert. -
For the Iberian Peninsula, Most Faunistic Studies of Saltatoria Refer to Spanish Populations

SCHMIDT † (*), ANA PAULA MArtINHO (**) and MARIA ROSA PAIVA (**) INTRODUCTION For the Iberian Peninsula, most faunistic studies of Saltatoria refer to Spanish populations. The orthopteroid fauna of Portugal is still poorly known. In the first half of the 20th century, De Seabra (1942) presented the first survey of the Portuguese Saltatoria, as well as a list of the litera- ture then available, including a study of the orthopteran species of Setúbal Peninsula (Cordeiro 1914) and a list of the species kept at the museum of the University of Coimbra, with an identification key (Aires & Me- nano 1916). Ebner (1941) reported on 40 species found at Monchique. Fernandes (1959a, 1959b, 1960) found some species new for the Por- tuguese fauna; since then, no intensive survey was carried out in Portugal. However, Harz published two valuable books entitled “The Orthoptera of Europe” (1969, 1975), in which the Orthopteroidea (Ensifera and Caelif- era) of Portugal were related to the European fauna. Schmidt & Lilge (1997) reported on the distribution of the subfamily Oedipodinae in Eu- rope and adjacent regions, discussing the orgin of some species. Ragge & Reynolds (1998) added the male songs to the morphology and distribution of the western European species, as a further species-specific character, but without checking the Portuguese populations, except for Callicrania selligera (Charpentier), syn. Platystolus (Neocallicrania) selliger (Char- pentier) (compare Pfau 1996). Furthermore, two short notes were recent- ly published on grasshoppers found in the province of Baixo Alentejo by Gonzáles Garcia (1985) and Hochkirch (1999). -

El dimorfismo sexual de tamaño (SSD por sus siglas en inglés) es un fenómeno ampliamente distribuido en los animales y sin embargo, enigmático en cuanto a sus causas últimas y próximas y a las relaciones alométricas entre el SSD y el tamaño corporal (regla de Rensch). Analizamos el SSD a niveles intra- e interes- pecíficos en un número de especies y géneros representativos de los órdenes or- topteroides mayores: Orthoptera, Phasmatodea, Mantodea, Blattodea, Dermaptera, Isoptera, y Mantophasmatodea. La vasta mayoría de las especies mostraron SSD sesgado hacia las hembras, pero numerosas excepciones ocurren en cucarachas y dermápteros. La regla de Rensch y su inversa no constituyeron patrones comunes, tanto a nivel intraespecífico como interespecífico, con la mayoría de las especies y géneros mostrando una relación isométrica entre los tamaños de macho y hembra. En algunos casos, los patrones alométricos hallados podrían relacionarse con la va- riación geográfica del tamaño corporal. -

J.ll.Fabre (1899). To my Father. Abstract In certain species of cricket and bushcricket (Orthoptera; Ensifera), the male transfers an elaborate spermatophore to the female at mating. This consists of a sperm-containing ampulla and an often substantial, sperm-free, gelatinous mass known as the spermatophylax. After mating, the female eats the spermatophylax before consuming the ampulla. The spermatophylax is particularly well developed in the bushcrickets (Tettigoniidae) and can contribute to a loss of as much as 40% of male body weigh at mating in some species. Recently, there has been considerable debate over the selective pressures responsible for the evolution and maintenance of the spermatophylax and other forms of nuptial feeding in insects. Two different, though not mutually exclusive, functions have been suggested for the spermatophylax: 1) nutrients from the spermatophylax may function to increase the weight and\or number of eggs laid by the female, i.e. may function as paternal investment; 2) the spermatophylax may function to prevent the female from eating the ampulla before complete ejaculate transfer, i.e. may be regarded as a form of mating effort. In this study, a comparative approach combined with laboratory manipulations were used in an attempt to elucidate the selective pressures responsible for the origin, evolutionary enlargement and maintenance (= function) of the spermatophylax in bushcrickets. -

Five orders of hemimetabolous “Polyne- optera” include species alien to Europe, namely Blattodea, Isoptera, Orthoptera, Phasmatodea and Der- maptera. A total of 37 species alien to Europe have been recorded. Th ese belong to 14 diff erent families. Most of these species show a detritivorous feeding regime (22 spp.), whereas 12 species are phytophagous and two are predators. Th e majority of species were first observed between 1900 and 1975. Unlike other arthropod groups, the mean number of polyneopteran species newly recorded per year showed no ac- celeration since 1975. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Authors analysed 33 supraspecific taxa of Palaearctic Platycleidini with unarmed prosternum, most of them hitherto considered genera or subgenera of Platycleis and Metrioptera. For each of them they give a short description of the characters revealing the correct classification of males and females. Then, they propose a more consistent classification, when both males and females of a supraspecific taxon are clearly distinct, they should be elevated to distinct genera. On the whole, they propose to classify Palaearctic taxa into 32 genera, for which they propose a key based on the characters used in this paper and illustrated by 140 photographs. Additionally, they describe the following new genera: Sardoplatycleis for Platycleis galvagnii from Sar- dinia, Amedegnatiana for Parnassiana vicheti from Mediterranean France; and the following new species: Platycleis buzzettii from Iran and Squamiana bressani from Uzbekistan. For each genus they list all the species known, pointing out also those which, for scarcity of specimens, have been tentatively classified within that genus and that probably should be better assigned to another one. -
