SFTR Newly Elected Officers and Board The ballot box was unlocked at the May general club meeting, and the votes from the membership were tabulated - the 2018-2019 officers are: President: Board of Directors: Alternates:

Mike Maldonado Bonny George Jr. Carrie Hershberger

Vice Pres: Eddie Garcia and Heidi Stibitz Wayne Hershberger Augie Saavedra Sylvia Cruz-Alvarez Treasurer: Ginger Krenz Appointed by board We congratulate the new officers and Board, and also wish to invite our members to attend Board meetings, to further voice their views & interests relating to the club. See the events calendar for info. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hi Trailriders,

I'm starting a new term as president of our club and hope to make this year everything you, the members joined the club for. In order to do that I need to know what some of those things are. I believe the board of directors represent you and we are here to try to make decisions that reflect your wishes. Just to inform the newest members and remind the old ones of some of the things we already do. Basically, the club was founded 40 years ago to keep open areas to ride and to ride them together to form friendships and enjoy sharing our passion. In every way we can enjoy our horses, whether it be riding local trails through the semi-rural neighborhoods, around farming areas (staying off crops of course) along miles of canal front trails. Also camping around the state and sometimes out of state to enjoy new trails and adventures. It is by SFTR efforts that the trails on the canals have what we call horse gates that allow us to ride them. We also ride a few parks in our area including Larry and Penny Thompson Park, and the . We give to our community by holding a few fundraiser rides each year to benefit charities that serve horses and children, including the SPCA., the Autism Ride for Whis- pering Manes which helps therapeutic riding to special needs children, St Jude Children’s Hospital for Cancer Research and the Jingle Bell Jaunt Toy Drive for local underprivileged kids. We help share our love of horses, country and community by carrying our colors in many parades, and local events. Yes, for over 40 years this club has shared horses and the feelings they bring to us with our community, horse owners or not. It's a great club and with your help and participation we can continue all this and more for 40 more years. I invite you to send me emails with all your thoughts and ideas for the club and I promise to include as many as is possible into each month’s board meet- ing agenda. You are also welcome to attend board meetings to see just how we try to keep things going. You can add your input at those meetings as well.

C'ya on the trail, Mike Maldonado President

Ok Trailriders,

I'm going to hold a little game. As most of you know I have owned and/or ridden several horses over my years in SFTR. Here is the challenge: guess which horse will be in the president's message in the next newsletter. I'll try to have a small prize for those that get the most right by next year’s banquet. Hint: I have an album named "Horses I've ridden” on my Facebook page : http://facebook.com/horseridermike So, send me an email with your guess. Good Luck, Mike [email protected]

Visit our website: sftrdade.org We have 331 family and single members that have joined or renewed for the year. Thank you very much!

Lack of any sound is cause for concern and your veterinarian should be consulted, especially in the presence of other signs of distress. Written by Susan Boyd and edited by Zachary Franklin, DVM TROPICAL PARK HURRICANE STALLS

First! Reserve your stalls with Debi Cat-Priest at 305-775-1820. When a Hurricane Watch goes into effect, the barn manager, Pablo Tejeda, will attempt to reach everyone to confirm that you will take possession of your stall. If unsuccessful, he will reassign your stall for that hurricane to someone else. Do not call Pablo unless a Watch is in effect, his number is 305-554-7334 and leave a message. Your reservation fee per stall is $26.00. This reserves a stall for the 2018 Hurricane Season. Once a Hurri- cane Watch goes into effect and you take possession of your stall, on the 25th hour you will owe Miami-Dade County an additional daily fee, plus an additional $26.00 to re-reserve your stall for the remainder of the 2018 Season. Upon arrival, Pablo will need to see your Coggins papers. Suggested items are flashlight, buckets with clips for water, (muck buckets work), a fly mask, your name, horse’s name and phone #’s taped to your stall doors, halter, written on your horse, a bale of hay to put in the stall so the horse has something to keep him busy all the hours he is there etc. You can’t leave anything but your horse at Tropical Park. Depending on the storm’s estimated arrival, Miami-Dade County will lock the park gates. Once the Hurri- cane Watch is lifted, you have 48 hours to remove your horse. All stalls must be cleaned before leaving or an additional charge per stall will be applied and you will be unable to reserve stalls in the future. Hope to see you on the trail – not at Tropical Park! AROUND THE PADDOCK... BEAUTIFUL WEATHER BRINGS ON GREAT ACTIVITIES!
