  • The Actual Letter to His Holiness the Dalai Lama in English
Tenzin Namgyal After the passing away of H. H. the 16th Karmapa, the junior Secretary Tenzin Namgyal created a great deal of trouble meddling within the administration (bla brang). He associated himself with the administrations of Situ, Gyaltsap and Kongtrul then traveled secretly to Delhi, Nepal and so forth in an attempt to persuade Ashok Burman and Shamo Karpo to resign from their offices as Trustees. In punishment for this the General Secretary and main trustee Topga Rinpoche dismissed him from his post in 1985. From that year on he stayed in Kathmandu at the Thrangu monastery and didn't return to Rumtek. His wife Tsheyag is Thrangu Rinpoche's sister. Later, in 1993, once Situ had taken over by force the Rumtek monastery and all its possessions, Situ appointed him General Secretary. Although he did subsequently take in charge the office for a few years, he was not a legitimate General Secretary. He had nonetheless since Tshurphu served as secretary to the 16th Karmapa, yet at the end his situation became that of “neither fish nor fowl”. Thrangu Rinpoche Earlier in 1959, when he was unable to provide for himself, he entered the establishment (khongs) of H.H. the 16th Karmapa. He stayed and accepted the position of Khenpo. Later, in 1974, on the occasion of the opening of Tulku Urgyen's new monastery in Kathmandu, when the Gyalwa Karmapa was invited to inaugurate and bestow the empowerments of the Kagyu Ngagdzö, a permission was, at the request of Tulku Urgyen, given for Thrangu Rinpoche to be – during one year alone – the instructor of the Karika etc.

  • Calendar 2021
Barom Kagyu Chodrak Drupju Chuling Year of the Iron Ox (2148) 2021 Important Dates Message from Venerable Sonam Tenzin Rinpoche: The past Year 2020 has been extremely difficult and challenging for all living beings, not just for us, human beings but also for all the animals sharing our same living environment. Last year, our planet Earth experienced some of the most extreme natural disasters, including decimating bushfires in Australia and the US, destroying many properties and killing billions of animals; devastating floods in Indonesia; earthquakes in Turkey, China, Iran, Russia and India. And of course, there was the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic affecting everyone, all the people of the world. These disasters are very timely reminders of the Buddha’s teaching about the impermanence of our very short existence on Earth. Now, Rinpoche wholeheartedly wishes and prays for “better situation” for 2021, that is for a Safe, Happy and Healthy Year 2021, for all the Barom Kagyu supporters, all the Dharma brothers and sisters and all the students and their families and friends. May many wonderful things happen in your lives. May all your wishes in accordance with the Dharma be totally and completely fulfilled. May your dharma practice flourish and may all obstacles to your practice vanish so that you move quickly on the path to enlightenment. Finally, Venerable Sonam Tenzin Rinpoche and Venerable Lama Namsai wish to extend their “Tashi Delek” to everyone, students, supporters, families and friends, their best wishes for a very happy Tibetan New Year, the year of the Iron Ox 2148. Calendar and important practice days: In Buddhist traditions, certain days are considered especially auspicious for Dharma practices.

  • The Karmapa Controversy
The Karmapa controversy A compilation of information 1 Foreword This work fills a requirement: to provide all meaningful information for a good understanding about the Karmapa controversy which, since 1992, shakes up the Karma Kagyu lineage. While web surfing, one can notice the huge information unbalance between the two differing sides: on Situ Rinpoche's side, there is plenty of documentation, while that on Shamar Rinpoche's side is sparse. On Situ Rinpoche's side, many websites give out information, with some, dedicated to this task, having almost daily updates. By comparison, Shamar Rinpoche side does not even provide the minimum information sufficient to understand its point of view. Now, complete information easily found is essential for everyone to make up one's opinion. To limit oneself to only one version of the facts does not allow for a full understanding and leads to all extremes, which we have sorely witnessed since 1992. Studying this controversy, one is surprised by the distressing level of disinformation and ignorance surrounding it. Few people know truly the circumstances and the unfolding of all these events which profoundly shook our lineage. Most contented themselves with adopting the view point of their entourage, siding either way, bringing up real quarrels and polemics between disciples of the same masters. It even came up to murders and monasteries attacks ! And yet, without going for any debate or confrontation, simply acquainting oneself with information provided by each side, allows us to stand back, to grasp the ins and outs in a more objective way and finally to reach a valid opinion in this matter.

  • A Short Biography of Four Tibetan Lamas and Their Activities in Sikkim
BULLETIN OF TIBETOLOGY 49 A SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF FOUR TIBETAN LAMAS AND THEIR ACTIVITIES IN SIKKIM TSULTSEM GYATSO ACHARYA Namgyal Institute of Tibetology Summarised English translation by Saul Mullard and Tsewang Paljor Translators’ note It is hoped that this summarised translation of Lama Tsultsem’s biography will shed some light on the lives and activities of some of the Tibetan lamas who resided or continue to reside in Sikkim. This summary is not a direct translation of the original but rather an interpretation aimed at providing the student, who cannot read Tibetan, with an insight into the lives of a few inspirational lamas who dedicated themselves to various activities of the Dharma both in Sikkim and around the world. For the benefit of the reader, we have been compelled to present this work in a clear and straightforward manner; thus we have excluded many literary techniques and expressions which are commonly found in Tibetan but do not translate easily into the English language. We apologize for this and hope the reader will understand that this is not an ‘academic’ translation, but rather a ‘representation’ of the Tibetan original which is to be published at a later date. It should be noted that some of the footnotes in this piece have been added by the translators in order to clarify certain issues and aspects of the text and are not always a rendition of the footnotes in the original text 1. As this English summary will be mainly read by those who are unfamiliar with the Tibetan language, we have refrained from using transliteration systems (Wylie) for the spelling of personal names, except in translated footnotes that refer to recent works in Tibetan and in the bibliography.

  • Funeral Advice for Buddhists in the Tibetan Tradition 'When I
Funeral advice for Buddhists in the Tibetan tradition as advised by Akong Tulku Rinpoche & ‘When I go’ a summary of your wishes Buddhist Funeral Services KAGYU SAMYE LING MONASTERY & TIBETAN CENTRE Eskdalemuir, Langholm, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, DG13 0QL Tel: 013873 73232 ext 1 www.samyeling.org E-mail: [email protected] Funeral advice for Buddhists, according to the Tibetan tradition We hope the enclosed information will be useful to Buddhists and their carers when the time comes for them to die. Buddhists believe that consciousness survives physical death and, following an interval (bardo), rebirth will usually take place. If we are not prepared, death can be a confusing and terrifying experience. With preparation, it can be an opportunity for attaining higher rebirth or even enlightenment, so we offer this information, which includes practical arrangements as well as spiritual care, in the hope that it will help as many people as possible during this special time. The topics covered include traditional practices performed for the dying person, main points to consider when we’re dying or accompanying a Buddhist who’s dying, organ donation, typical funeral service, practical arrangements to consider, storing cremated remains and a list of various services and products available at Samye Ling. After reading, a summary of your wishes can then be contained in the enclosed ‘When I go’ documents and given to those close to you. These also include information to give to nurses and undertakers. It’s useful to carry a summary of the information on you, as in the Buddhist ‘I.D.’ card (see ‘Various Services’ document), since executors and funeral directives may not be readily available.

  • New Bio of Tulku Sang-Ngag Rinpoche
1 Namchak Sang-ngag Tenzin Rinpoche, the Fifth Gochen Tulku The fifth Gochen Tulku, Namchak Sangak Tenzin Rinpoche, was born in 1953 of the Western calendar. His father was Lama Tashi Döndrup of the Namchak clan, and his mother was Meru Tsoma Dza Pema Yangtso of the Kyungpo clan, also known more familiarly as Peyak. While Rinpoche was still quite young, his elders would remark on the prophecy found in Drupwang Tsoknyi’s account of the origins and future of Gochen Monastery, in which it is stated, Widespread fame of a blue rat will be seen from the distant region. The male dragon will wander in the ten directions from the border. Rinpoche heard people say that they interpreted the former statement to refer to the Lord Lama Namkha Tsewang, since the rat was the animal symbol with his birth year was the rat, and although his enlightened activities were extensive he died just as his fame began to spread. They also told Lama Tashi Döndrup , “The latter statement concerns your son, and prophesies that his activities will be widespread.” When Rinpoche was three years old, he was taken to a farm where he walked barefoot on a boulder, whereupon impressions of his footprints appeared in the stone, so that rumors spread that he was the incarnation of Namchak Tulku.1 Later on, when Kongtrul Lodrö Rapel came to the child’s house, the little boy caught hold of his horse’s rein and wept, saying, “This rein is mine.” The lama asked him, “Who are you?’” whereupon he respectfully told him, “I am Namkha Tsewang.” He replied, “Since this rein was one I received when the former master Namkha Tsewang and I made an exchange, it truly belongs to you.” And he handed the reins to the child.

  • Short Biography of the Tenga Rinpoche
Short Biography of the Tenga Rinpoche The story of Tenga Tulkus starts at the time of the 7th Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche. One of his students was the highly realised Lama Samten. He was also known as "Gönkhen Samten", signifying that he was a specialist of protector practices (Gönpo = Protector). He spent most of his life in retreat, meditating on his yidam Karma Pakshi and on the main Kagyu protectors. He practised mostly Dorje Bernagchen and Shing Kyong. The power of his blessing was such that he could cure all kinds of sickness instantly and he was widely known throughout the region. Many people came to receive his blessing At the time of the 8th Sangye Nyenpa, Tenzin Drupchok, Lama Samten had grown old and sometimes displayed physical unease and sickness. However, one day he seemed to be very well and happy. On that day, he told Sangye Nyenpa that he felt very happy because soon he would be going away to a beautiful land, a wonderful, peaceful Tilogaards netsted: A Short Biography of Tenga Tulku www.tilogaard.dk 1 garden. Among other things, he gave his thigh bone trumpet to Sangye Nyenpa and asked him to take good care of it until he came back. Soon afterwards he passed away. Some years later, Tenzin Drupchok went on a pilgrimage to Lhasa and Central Tibet. As was customary at that time in Tibet, a high Lama could not just travel quickly from one point to another, but had to accept invitations to monasteries and villages on his way in order to give empowerments, teachings and blessings.

  • The 'Alternative' 17Th Karmapa, Ogyen Dorje's Speech
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdI4DMRFkm4 (The section, where Ogyen Dorje talks about his own perception of himself as a Karmapa incarnation or Tulku is highlighted by bold letters.) The ‘alternative’ 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Dorje’s speech in his ‘special’ video broadcast from march 2018 Today is the last day of the 35th Kagyu Mönlam Chenmo. And so, just as I have requested of him, this year His Eminence Goshir Gyaltsab Rinpoche has gone to unfathomable efforts to come and preside over the Kagyu Mönlam. My original plan was that Rinpoche only needed to attend a few of the most important events and did not need to come to everything, but Rinpoche has, whenever he has been able, come to preside over the sessions whenever he could without missing a single day. This is extremely kind of him, so on the behalf of all the monastics and the lay people, who have attended the Mönlam, I would like to express my deepest thanks to Rinpoche. The picture shows the ‘alternative’ Karmapa Ogyen Thrinley Dorje. Photograph from the video. Likewise, Kyabje Mingyur Rinpoche showed us the kindness of giving meditation instructions during the pre-Mönlam teachings. And then, since then, during the time of the Kagyu Mönlam, Rinpoche has also put in a lot of effort to come to many different events, both large and small. So, I would like to once again thank Rinpoche on behalf of everyone. This year, even though I was not there, everyone in the Mönlam organising committee has taken on the responsibilities for their individual teams and co-operated – working together – just the same as they would, if I were there.
