(God – Exodus 13:21) How did God lead them during the day? • How did God lead them during the night? Did the fre give them light at night? Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, began thinking about what he had done. • Did Pharaoh wish that he had not let the Israelites go free? What did Pharaoh do? (Exodus 14:6-9) • How did the Israelites feel when they saw the Egyptian army coming toward them? • In front of the Israelites was water (the Red Sea). The desert and mountains were on each side of them, and the Egyptian army was behind them. Were they trapped? • Had God helped the Israelites before? Instead of being afraid, should the Israelites have remembered how God had already helped them? Should they have trusted God to take care of them this time also? • When the Israelites were scared, what did Moses tell them? (Exodus 14:13-14) God told Moses to tell the Israelites to go forward. God would do a miracle. • Where did God move the pillar of cloud? (Behind the Israelites and in front of the Egyptians) Could the Egyptians see the Israelites through the cloud? • What did God tell Moses to do with the rod in his hand? What did God send to blow on the sea during the night? What happened to the water? Was the ground wet or dry? • The Israelites had been trapped on all sides. When God divided the water, were they trapped any longer? What did they do? Imagine walking on dry ground between giant walls of water! The Egyptian army tried to follow the Israelites through the Red Sea. • What happened to their chariot wheels? • What did God tell Moses to do? When the water came back together, what happened to the Egyptians? • Did God save the Israelites from the Egyptians? Was God able to take them all the way out of Egypt? SIMPLE TRUTHS: God used a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fre at night to lead the Israelite people. • We don’t have a pillar of cloud or a pillar of fre to tell us where to go or what to do. So, how can we know what God wants us to do? (The Bible teaches us what God wants us to do. And if we love Jesus, the Holy Spirit will lead us to do what is right.) • If we want God to lead us throughout our life, we need to give our lives to Him. Do any of you want to do that now? Do you know what Jesus did for us so that we could be with Him forever? The Israelites were afraid when they saw the Egyptian army chasing them. • Sometimes we are afraid too. When things are scary and we don’t know what to do, who should we talk to about our problem? Does God love us and care about us? Is God powerful and loving enough to help us? • When we are afraid, we should remember the wonderful promises of God! One of God’s promises is “I will never leave you…” Let’s pray and thank God that He is with us. • God helped the Israelites and He can help us too. Let’s ask God for His help! AND REMEMBER...     EXODUS: GOD PROVIDES Grumbling Exodus 15:22-17:7 “GOD PROVIDES” is the title we’ve given to our summer sermon series on Exodus and those two words sum up the story of Exodus so well. Consider all of the ways in which God has provided for his people… in just the first 15 chapters of Exodus: After providing them with food in the wake of a devastating world famine, God provided the family of Israel (70 people in all) with a new home in a fertile plain in Egypt where they flourished and grew to become a nation of people. God provided the Israelites with a deliverer named Moses to lead them out of Egypt. God provided the Israelites with freedom by performing miracle after miracle when Pharaoh’s heart was resistant to allow the Israelites to leave Egypt. God provided a pathway for his people to cross the Red Sea, when Pharaoh changed his mind and decided to pursue the Israelites. And as we’ll see today, God continued to provide for his people as they journeyed toward the Promised Land. Some words that you’re going to hear recur throughout the message today are, “remember” and “don’t forget.” How about you say them with me… Those words are said by God and his prophets to his people, the Israelites, throughout the Old Testament. God repeatedly told his people, “Remember all that I’ve done for you and be intentional about reminding your children and grandchildren of all that I’ve done. Don’t forget.” One of the best known places where God says this is in Deuteronomy chapter 6.

This paper will explore the interpretation of Moses’ puzzling command to the Israelite idolaters to “slay yourselves” in early and classical tafsīr. I will argue that the subtle changes in Muslim exegetes’ understanding of this aspect of the episode reflect important developments in early Islamic soci- ety, in particular the emergence of the accommodationist political ideol- ogy that would become one of the defining features of classical Sunnism.     Who We Are Argyle United Methodist Church Our story started with 27 faithful families who moved to a new area and joined together in community. Rancher Henry Johns had a well that was frequented by travelers passing through the area. The well took on special signicance in 1884 as the water source for the annual “Brush Arbor Camp Meetings” sponsored by Prairie Mound Methodist Church as well as for family reunions, prayers, singing, repenting, playing, eating and events each year to celebrate the end of harvest. Many years later, Prairie Mound Methodist Church became part of Argyle United Methodist Church. In 1898, Argyle UMC purchased land atop "Methodist Hill" from the Texas and Pacic Railroad. The rst sanctuary, a frame structure, was built by the rst pastor, Reverend Blueford Henry Webster, and church members. They drove six wagons to the Dallas planning mill to get lumber to build the pews two of which still have a special place in our church today! Over the years, Argyle United Methodist Church expanded. Adjoining property was acquired by trustees in 1947 and again in 1973. In 1986 the sanctuary was renovated and enlarged and a reception area, oces, library, kitchen and social hall were added. By 2003, the church had added three portable buildings and exhausted all means of expanding at its present location. As church membership continued to grow, a need to expand to a bigger building did too. Old "Methodist Hill" and the original Methodist church became the Argyle Town Hall and in 2005, Argyle UMC acquired 20 contiguous acres of land on Highway 377.

Crossing the Red Sea: There is a traditional route of the Exodus which has the children of Israel wading in shallow water through an area north of the Gulf of Suez while the tide was out (marked in yellow on the map). This area cannot be the crossing site as it does not match the biblical account. A shallow area of water could not drown all of the Egyptian army. They were to leave Egypt proper before encountering the Red Sea crossing. After crossing the Red Sea, the Bible says they encountered the mountain of God or Mount Sinai which is in Midian. Midian is not in the area we call today the Sinai Peninsula. It is instead in Saudi Arabia and can be found on most maps in that location. There is no archaeological evidence of the forty year existence of the children of Israel in the whole of the Sinai Peninsula, nor at the “traditional” site of Mt. Sinai. There is another crossing point which was found by Ron Wyatt. He spent 22 years trying to match up the scriptures with land marks, and was successful in finding several places, including the cities of the plains Sodom and Gomorrah, as well as Noah’s Ark, and the site of the crossing of the Red Sea.
