XVIII AIRBORNE CORPS ASSOCIATION SKY DRAGONS Spring 2012 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 82ND DOMINATES XVIII ABN CORPS NCO AND SOLDIER OF YEAR COMPETITION Left to Right – CSM (Ret) Ted Gaweda, Pfc. Jeremy Shivick, Sgt. Jason Thomas, Alan Yeater On 5 April in a ceremony conducted at Sports USA, a huge sports bar at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, two paratroopers of the XVIII Airborne Corps' 82nd Airborne Division were selected as the XVIII Airborne Corps' 2012 NCO and Soldier of the Year. They were Sgt. Jason T. Thomas, 26, and Pfc. Jeremy Shivick, 21. Both Soldiers are assigned to the 1st Platoon, C Company, 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, which is part of the division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team (BCT). This is 2 the first time that both winners were from the same unit. The competition was held from 2 to 4 April, and the winners were announced during the ceremony which was presided over by the Ft. Bragg Garrison Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Samuel Campbell and the command sergeant major of XVIII Abn Corps' NCO Academy, CSM Nicolino Parisi. These were four days of grueling, early morning and late night events which included basic Soldier skills, the Army physical fitness test, a written exam, urban map orienteering, M4 rifle qualification, a weapons event, and an interview board. The competition certainly challenged the confidence and motivation of the Soldiers. Twenty-one Soldiers competed, representing each subordinate unit of the XVIII Abn Corps. Spc. Michael C. Lauritzen, from Jackson, Michigan, assigned to the 716th MP Battalion, 16th MP Brigade, Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, was quoted saying, “I'm grateful for being here, glad that my leadership had the confidence in me to compete at this level. -

Chiafos CHIEF, IOWA CIVIL AIR PATROL ACADEMY Camp Dodge, IA 3rd Edition (Revised) January 2007 The Commander’s Responsibility Each commander needs to acknowledge and accept responsibility for the appearance of all individuals under their command. Every military unit has a uniform culture. Left undirected, and on their own, members of the unit will collectively and unconsciously set a standard for wearing the uniform. Once established, that standard will perpetuate itself. As new members come in they will observe the standard, and dress down or up to match it. In any unit where uniforms are not inspected regularly, or where the leadership fails to immediately confront individual violators; the standard will plummet like water seeking its lowest level. This is a serious breach of military discipline and the worst kind of leadership! Sadly, in some units, the senior members are the greatest offenders. No matter how bad the current standard is in your unit, it can be turned around. First, the commander must meet standards, if you don’t - correct it! You cannot conduct an inspection, or correct infractions, when the offenders look better than you do. Next, demand compliance from your Cadet Programs Officer, and all cadet officers and NCOs. When infractions are observed, use the chain of command to immediately confront and correct violations. When repeated correction fails, revoke the privilege of wearing the Air Force Uniform. Openly reprimand offenders and reward those who exceed the standards. Uniform inspections must be the first order of business at any CAP meeting, gathering, or other event. -

Littleton Bible Chapel Position Paper Covering and Uncovering of the Head during Prayer and Ministry of the Word 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 It has been the practice of LBC for the past forty-five years to ask women to cover their heads when they pray and teach publicly, and for men to uncover their heads when they pray and teach in a public setting. This practice is not an empty tradition of our church but a direct injunction of the Scriptures. We have prepared the following paper on 1 Corinthians 11:2-16, for you to consider the accuracy and the truthfulness of our practice. It is our desire to encourage believers to take this passage seriously and to consistently practice the teaching therein. This has been a long neglected passage, and today is completely unacceptable in our feminist environment. We understand the offense of this teaching. But since we take the passage at face value and not as cultural, we have no choice but to practice its teaching. Our desire as elders is to make people aware of what the Bible teaches about this distinctive Christian practice and to encourage both men and women to practice this teaching. If however, people disagree with our interpretation, we do not force this practice on anyone. We respect the liberty of the conscience of all our fellow believers. 1 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 Headship and Subordination Symbolized by Covering and Uncovering of the Head The letter of 1 Corinthians deals with many practical local church issues and problems, ones that affect all churches in all ages. -
Camouflage Combat Uniform
CAMOUFLAGE COMBAT UNIFORM COL Robert F. Mortlock, USA (Ret.) The development, testing, and fielding of combat uniforms for soldiers offer acquisition professionals an opportunity to analyze how programs progress through the U.S. defense acquisition system. This case centers on the U.S. Army’s decision to change the camouflage patterns on combat uniforms and equipment for soldiers. The case is broadly applicable to project managers, business managers, engineers, testers, and logisticians involved in project management, while specifically targeting defense acquisition professionals. Emphasis is placed on the development of critical thinking and analysis skills in the areas of stakeholder management, resource management, and decision making in a complex environment. The case is developed in two distinct parts. Part I provides an analysis of the Army’s development of a plan with an increased chance of success in meeting desired objectives. BACKGROUND The Korean War was an outgrowth of an unstable situation on the Korean Peninsula at the conclusion of the Second World War. In August 1945, the Soviet Union declared war on the Empire of Japan. With the endorsement of the United States, Soviet forces seized land in the northern part of the peninsula, stopping at the 38th Parallel. The United States then occupied the southern half. Two different political regimes with opposing views emerged from this situation, creating the perfect recipe for conflict. War broke out in June 1950. North Korea, hoping to assert its dominance over the entire peninsula, invaded South Korea and made quick progress. Gold Jewellery in Ptolemaic, Roman and Byzantine Egypt. Jack M. Ogden ABSTRACT This study deals with the gold jewellery made and worn in Egypt during the millennium between Alexander the Great's invasion of Egypt and the Arab conquest. Funerary jewellery is largely ignored as are ornaments in the traditional, older Egyptian styles. The work draws upon a wide variety of evidence, in particular the style, composition and construction of surviving jewellery, the many repre- sentations of jewellery in wear, such as funerary portraits, and the numerous literary references from the papyri and from Classical and early Christian writers. Egypt, during the period considered, has provided a greater wealth of such information than anywhere else in the ancient or medieval world and this allows a broadly based study of jewellery in a single ancient society. The individual chapters deal with a brief historical background; the information available from papyri and other literary sources; the sources, distribution, composition and value of gold; the origins and use of mineral and organic gem materials; the economic and social organisation of the goldsmiths' trade; and the individual jewellery types, their chronology, manufacture and significance. This last section is covered in four chapters which deal respectively with rings, earrings, necklets and pendants, and bracelets and armiets.
