ABSTRACT Title of thesis: BEYOND VÉRITÉ Anna Lorraine Rowser, Master of Fine Arts, 2013 Thesis directed by: Associate Professor Maud Casey, Department of English Beyond Vérité is a collection of fictional short stories exploring what happens when characters’ perceptions of truth get shaken up. Landscape plays a central role in this collection, from the deceptively dangerous beauty of Yosemite, to a reserve in Madagascar where the surreal becomes possible, to the Mojave Desert where it can be difficult to determine reality from illusion—or fact and fiction, as in the “Hole Card,” a retelling of the legend of Death Valley Scotty. Andrew Winer, this project has been a constant effort to merely approach the heights and depths I witnessed in your teachings, your writing, and your friendship. Michael Jayme, you remain a grinning reminder to me of the need to retain a sense of humanity, compassion, and decency that stands both apart and in concert with the task of writing. Goldberry Long, you were the only one who dared to answer my silly question of “How do you do this writing thing?” and in doing so, you gave me not only a creative process, but also a narrative voice.
