Major emphasis, in terms of numbers of resources discussed or listed, is cn tne Negroes, North American Indians, and Spanish Americans. Other groups include the Orientals, Jews, and the Amish. The first section deals with the rationale for including teaching about minorities in the social studies programs of schools. A second section covers materials for students K-12 as well as ideas which will stimulate interest in studying minority groups. '7" 11* PREFACE At the 1969 convention of the Association of Christian School Ad- ministrators held in Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, the follow- ing resolution was adopted: Whereas, the variety of material available to the classroom teacher in our schools dealing with minority groups is con- siderable, and Whereas, the relevance and inadequacies of this material is not easily determined, Therefore, be it resolved, that the Association of Christian School Administrators ask the National Union of Christian Schools to recommend materials for use in this area, and if necessary pro- duce guidelines for our teachers to use in the classrooms. In response to the resolution this curriculum resource paper was produced. Listing of materials does not necessarily constitute a full endorsement of each item. Teachers and others interested in minority group studier, are invited to share their comments and suggestions, particularly in re- gard to materials listed which may not prove to be suitable, and to sug- gest other materials which have been effective in Christian classrooms. Social studies serve at least a dual function, that of providing the background by which to better understand the preaat scene and also of pointing to viable alternatives in coping with the challenges of this decade. Of more basic need is a Christian perspective in contrast to rank humanism and other philosophies which implicitly or explicitly assume that man's "baser traits" will even- tually evolve out of him, given enough time, proper training, and ideal environment. There is something about human nature which caused men to turn upon others.For the Christian who in principle has a new life in Christ this human nature has been redeemed and is being redirected, but there is still a surplus of meanness in his soul which St. Paul referred to in his epistles as the "old man."The scriptures describe the human heart more accurately than any other document, indicating that "out of it are the issues of life." :fen's meanness to men, expressed by the poet Robert Burns as "man's in- humanity to an (which) makes countless thousands mourn, "basically is a re- flection of alienation from God.Hence it is obvious that the only basic and lasting remedy for man's viciovanesa and indifference to hie fellow men is a restored relation to God through Jesus Christ as a result of which there should follow an improvement of relationships among men of good will as fruits of the Spirit. But there are secondary causes which Christians as well as others find too easy to minimize. The Hester spoke of always having the poor with us, and by way of extension one could wake a case for the ignorant, the sick, -1- and the cr:minals, but this scarcely excuses anyone from serious efforts in establishing schools and hospitals as well as being active in the pre- vention of crime, poverty, and slums. Long standing and of particular intensity of late has been the mis- treatment of minority groups, a communal amplification of one person act- ing like a bully towards others. The definition of a minority group could be along ethnic, religious, or economic-social lines and sometimes is a combination of these. A functional definition of a minority group would be a group of people with identifiable charactertstics which serve to set them off from the majority members of a given society. These minority groups generally are not extended the same opportunities in practice as the majority members enjoy. History is replete with examples of this- - in ancient and medieval as well as modern times. Biblical history re- cords how the Egyptians and Israelites would not eat with one another and how in New Testament times the Jews were characterized as "having no deal- ings with the Samaritans."Noticeable minority groups in Anglo-America today would be the North American Indians, Negroes, Spanish Americans, Orientals, Jews, the French Canadians, Lmish, Hutterites, and others of varying physical characteristics or ideologies. That direct or indirect mistreatment of minority groups is contrary to the Christian faith scarcely needs elaboration. Persons may never be treat- ed as "things." The summary of the law of God is to love--concretely, ex- plicitly, positively. Although this love, a reflection of the love of Christ, will find different forms of expression at different times, the motivation remains the same. For those who refuse to take serionely the laws of God there remain the laws of men designed to remove discrimination practices which are at beat illegal and at worst immoral. Both Canada and the United -2- States claim to be pluralistic societies, and both are continuing to strive to make that dream a reality. The concept of "liberty and justice for all" implies freedom ofoppor- tunity, freedom of choice, freedom of movement, freedom of expression,free- dom ti perpetuate one's own heritage, freedom to do whatone is corvinced is right and proper within the minimal 1 ..nds of that which isnecessary to keep a society or nation from complete disintegration. That men should be kept from opportunitiesthe whole range of opportunitiea--by coerciveor repres%ive means or mores is indefensible legally, morally, or any :,her way. But the opposite side of the coin is also true (there is no such thing as a one-sided coin)--men should be free to live with those whom they choose, work and worship with those of like mind, and send their chil- dren to schools consistent with their on basic values.There is some- thing artifical if not damaging in forcing people into situations which they do not genuinely freely choose. Tyranny is the orrosite of freedom, whether tyranny appears essentially benevolent or malevolent. Freedom enables persons end groups to have genuine opportunities to develop into that which they wish to become.

    Where Literature Fills the Gaps: The Book of Negroes as a Canadian Work of Rememory Christine Duff awrence Hill’s the Book of negroeS1 takes its title from a late eighteenth-century document listing some 3,000 Black Loyalists given passage to Nova Scotia following the American LWar of Independence. Prior to Hill’s widely read novel, few Canadians were aware of the document’s existence, much less the reasons for this displacement of people and their treatment following their arrival. Through the voice of Hill’s protagonist, Aminata Diallo, the fictional scribe who creates the register “The Book of Negroes,” these historical facts are rememoried2 and rewoven into the fabric of the Canadian historical record. George Elliott Clarke explains the importance of these exercises of remembering and rememorying in his introduction to the anthology Eyeing the North Star: Directions in African-Canadian Literature: “Because African-Canadian history is ignored in Canada, African-Canadian writers are forced to act as historians” (xx).3 The need for this work of recollection and rememory in the Canadian context is an urgent one, as Canada is too often absent from discussions of post- slavery New World societies. Slavery fiction in the United States, for example, has been an object of study since its beginnings in the 1960s.4 In evoking the Black Loyalist experience in Nova Scotia, Hill brings parts of Canada’s past out of the shadows, filling the gaps in the history books alluded to by Clarke. In this sense, the novel is part of a wider movement in contemporary Canadian historical fiction, as described by Herb Wyile in Speculative Fictions: Contemporary Canadian Novels and the Writing of History, in that it draws our attention to a historically marginalized population and is marked by a clear preoccupation with the historiography itself.

    ariel: a review of international english literature Vol. 45 No. 4 Pages 111–132 Copyright © 2014 The Johns Hopkins University Press and the University of Calgary Perspectives Contesting Clarke: Towards A De-Racialized African-Canadian Literature Desi Valentine Abstract: This article draws on personal narrative, literary criti- cism, and multicultural Canadian literature to interrogate George Elliott Clarke’s conceptualizations of a Black Canadian literature and a racialized African-Canadian literary canon in his 2002 essay collection Odysseys Home: Mapping African-Canadian Literatures. Clarke’s work is juxtaposed with my own experience as a bi-racial, multi-ethnic, Black, Negro, mulatto, half-caste, African-Canadian woman, and with those of non-Black scholars, to expose the shifting contours of ethnicity and the blurred and blurring boundaries of Canadian blackness in multi-, mixed-, and indeterminately racial Canada. Through these critical compari- sons, I suggest that a racialized African-Canadian literary canon excludes the multiple Canadian cultures in which our literatures are formed, and supports racial constructs that no longer fit the shapes of our multi-ethnic, diasporic, postcolonial skins. I con- clude that upon the fertile ground tended by Clarke’s Black lit- erary activism, a de-racialized African-Canadian literature may grow.     Early Settlements In Canada West For The Fugitives Of Slavery Free at last, Free at last, Thank God Almighty, I’m free at last. By 1850, there were Black communities in six general areas of Canada West. Along the Detroit Frontier . In Chatham and its surrounding area . In the central section of Canada West . Along the Niagara Peninsula . In large urban centres on Lake Ontario . On the northern edge of Simcoe and Grey Counties In 1791, under the direction of the British Parliament the Constitutional Act designated a portion of the territory known as British North America as Upper Canada (Ontario) and Lower Canada (Quebec). However, in 1841 in response to the Rebellions of 1837, the British Parliament created Canada West (Ontario) and Canada East (Quebec), forming a united government. This was an attempt to remedy the issues that arose prior to the Rebellions in British North America. There were four Black Settlements organized for the fugitives of slavery in Upper Canada / Canada West. 1. The Wilberforce Settlement was the first of these, located near Lucan in 1829. 2. The Dawn Settlement, located near Dresden began in 1845, and was probably the best known. 3. The Elgin (Buxton) Settlement started in Raleigh Township, near Chatham in 1849 was considered to be the most successful. 4. The Refugee Home Society, located in Essex county, founded in 1851 was the last of these organized Settlements for freedom seekers. Besides these centres of Black settlement, small clusters of Blacks and individual Black families were settled throughout Canada West. The Black population increased drastically in the years following the passage of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act in the USA.

    A Short History of Slavery in Canada The First Canadian Slave The first black person known to have lived in Canada was a native of Madagascar who was bought at around the age of 7 by the British Commander David Kirke during his invasion of New France and sold to Olivier Le Tardif, head clerk of the French Colony. When Quebec was handed back to the French in 1632, Le Tardif, who had often collaborated with the British, was forced to flee. He sold his slave to a Quebec resident Guillaume Couillard Lespinacy. The boy was educated in a school established by the Jesuit priest, Father Le Jeune. He was later baptised as Olivier Le Jeune, taking the first name of the French clerk and the surname of the Jesuit priest. He died on May 10, 1654. It is believed that by the time of his death his official status was changed from that of 'domestic servant' to freeman. A Common Practice Slavery became a common practice in New France and the Church became the largest slave owner. Many have asked how could this happen, when in 1435 Pope Eugene IV in his Bull Sicut Dudum condemned slavery and those engaged in it, and those who ignore the Bull are excommunicated, ipso facto. In 1537, Pope Paul III issued the Bull Sublimis Deus that condemned slavery. Pope Gregory XIV, 1591, Pope Urban VIII, 1639, and Pope Benedict XIV, 1741 also condemned slavery. We can only assume that those Jesuits and religious sisters who owned slaves were automatically excommunicated. In fact, the ports are the first places where slaves are put to work.
