The Book of Negroes As a Canadian Work of Rememory
Where Literature Fills the Gaps: The Book of Negroes as a Canadian Work of Rememory Christine Duff awrence Hill’s the Book of negroeS1 takes its title from a late eighteenth-century document listing some 3,000 Black Loyalists given passage to Nova Scotia following the American LWar of Independence. Prior to Hill’s widely read novel, few Canadians were aware of the document’s existence, much less the reasons for this displacement of people and their treatment following their arrival. Through the voice of Hill’s protagonist, Aminata Diallo, the fictional scribe who creates the register “The Book of Negroes,” these historical facts are rememoried2 and rewoven into the fabric of the Canadian historical record. George Elliott Clarke explains the importance of these exercises of remembering and rememorying in his introduction to the anthology Eyeing the North Star: Directions in African-Canadian Literature: “Because African-Canadian history is ignored in Canada, African-Canadian writers are forced to act as historians” (xx).3 The need for this work of recollection and rememory in the Canadian context is an urgent one, as Canada is too often absent from discussions of post- slavery New World societies. Slavery fiction in the United States, for example, has been an object of study since its beginnings in the 1960s.4 In evoking the Black Loyalist experience in Nova Scotia, Hill brings parts of Canada’s past out of the shadows, filling the gaps in the history books alluded to by Clarke. In this sense, the novel is part of a wider movement in contemporary Canadian historical fiction, as described by Herb Wyile in Speculative Fictions: Contemporary Canadian Novels and the Writing of History, in that it draws our attention to a historically marginalized population and is marked by a clear preoccupation with the historiography itself. -

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This dissertation examines Black civil society organizations that brought the African- Canadian community closer to their rights as citizens of Canada West from 1840-1901. Past scholars have applied the concept of civil society to White organizations, but the following considers civil society organizations in the context of African-Canadian life. Through a broader discussion of multiple Black cultural organizations, including literary societies, fraternal orders, religious societies, and etiquette groups, “Lifting As We Climb” highlights the community’s training of future activists and the application of the lessons learned within the walls of these groups to “mainstream” society. During the nineteenth century African Canadians experienced the harsh realities that accompanied their newfound freedom in Canada West, particularly from racist Whites. In response, the Black community utilized African-Canadian cultural organizations to create change. “Lifting As We Climb” argues that, while African-Canadian citizens came together through organizational work, for the common and overarching reason of equality, their fight against injustice resulted in the emergence of a Black civil society. -

ariel: a review of international english literature Vol. 45 No. 4 Pages 111–132 Copyright © 2014 The Johns Hopkins University Press and the University of Calgary Perspectives Contesting Clarke: Towards A De-Racialized African-Canadian Literature Desi Valentine Abstract: This article draws on personal narrative, literary criti- cism, and multicultural Canadian literature to interrogate George Elliott Clarke’s conceptualizations of a Black Canadian literature and a racialized African-Canadian literary canon in his 2002 essay collection Odysseys Home: Mapping African-Canadian Literatures. Clarke’s work is juxtaposed with my own experience as a bi-racial, multi-ethnic, Black, Negro, mulatto, half-caste, African-Canadian woman, and with those of non-Black scholars, to expose the shifting contours of ethnicity and the blurred and blurring boundaries of Canadian blackness in multi-, mixed-, and indeterminately racial Canada. Through these critical compari- sons, I suggest that a racialized African-Canadian literary canon excludes the multiple Canadian cultures in which our literatures are formed, and supports racial constructs that no longer fit the shapes of our multi-ethnic, diasporic, postcolonial skins. I con- clude that upon the fertile ground tended by Clarke’s Black lit- erary activism, a de-racialized African-Canadian literature may grow. Plaque Build-up: Commemorating the Buxton Settlement, 1950-2000 Sean Kheraj Introduction After a brief visit to the small Southern Ontario hamlets of North and South Buxton, one is immediately struck by the serenity and isolation of this region. Vast fields dotted by modest dwellings dominate the landscape. This thinly populated countryside is the second largest national historic site in Canada. Embedded in the landscape are several commemorative plaques. In South Buxton, immediately in front of St. Andrew’s Church, there stands a short cairn with a small bronze plaque that reads, “1949, In memory of Rev. Wm. King who founded Buxton Settlement, 1849, and built St. Andrew’s Church, 1859.” A few steps away from this cairn, stands a blue plaque that also commemorates the Buxton settlement. It was placed there in 1965. In North Buxton, there is a museum and a set of three plaques that designate the Buxton Settlement as a national historic site. Why are there so many commemorations to a single place and a single moment in history? If we take a closer look at how these separate acts of commemoration came to be - the cairn and the various plaques - we can begin to unravel this complex set of events and multiple layers of memory. Each plaque was written and placed with particular interests and concerns in mind. Each of these plaques tells us more about the time and the people who placed them there than about the founding of the settlement itself. The placement of a monument or plaque is a political act expressing various meanings and serving particular interests. -

This partiality and distortion has had real, if difficult to quantify costs for Chatham's local black population. While it is a worthwhile and necessary project to recuperate lost local histories for their own sake in order to encourage and inform the reframing of larger national and historically more influential histories, this study also focuses on the history of black people who lived in Chatham in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in order to explore situated black lives that were actively constructed and performed. This deliberate attempt to expand the historiography of blacks in Canada from that of black-as-object to black-as-subject required an investigation into the local history of blacks in Chatham, their socio-philosophical and socio-economic heritages and the construction of particular identities shaped by race, class, and gendered interests forged within a shared experience of ongoing white racism. Informed by census data, primary fraternal order documents, and oral testimony, this study also holds that dislocations occurred at the turn of the twentieth century that concretized class membership, exacerbated class distinctions all while complicating the tenability of a coherent and cohesive black community. -
