Facebook ads, therefore, have an essential role in contemporary political communication, not only because of their extensive use in international political campaigns, but also because they address intriguing questions about the regulation of disinformation on social networking sites. This research employs a corpus of 14,684 Facebook ads published by the major national political parties during their campaigns leading up to the two Spanish general elections held in 2019. A manual content analysis was performed on all the visually identical ads so as to identify those containing disinformation and those denouncing it. The topics addressed in these ads were then exam- ined.

Published on Eurydice (https://eacea.ec.europa.eu/national-policies/eurydice) Political situation The political form of the Spanish State is a parliamentary monarchy, with King Felipe VI as Head of State and the legislative power residing in the Spanish Parliament, which in turn monitors the executive branch. Spain is a multi-party country. Since 1982, there have been mainly governments of the Partido Popular (People’s Party) and the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party). After the elections held on December 2015, new political parties and citizen candidacies emerged, which had already participated in the formation of local and regional governments. The latest election results forecast the following distribution: 1. Local elections (May 2019): the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (Socialist Party) managed to govern 18 out of the 52 provincial capitals 12 were governed by the Partido Popular (Popular Party) 7 by citizen candidacies 3 by the party Ciudadanos (Citizens Party) in the rest of provincial capitals, with the exception of Zamora, governed by Izquierda Unida (United Left), elected mayors belong to regionalist parties. 2. Regional elections (November 2018 in Andalusia, December 2017 in Catalonia and May 2019 in the rest of Autonomous Communities, except for Galicia and the Basque Country, whose electoral process took place in September 2016): the Partido Popular and the Partido Socialista Obrero Español were able to form governments in most of them by negotiating pacts with emerging political parties such as Podemos and Ciudadanos. After a parliamentary vote on 7 January 2020, Pedro Sánchez (PSOE) has been elected as the new Primer Minister.

As the article went on to observe, ‘Even in the midst of one of the greatest challenges to capitalism in 75 years, involving a breakdown of the ﬁnancial sys- tem because of “irrational exuberance”, greed and the weakness of regulatory systems, European socialists and their leftist cousins have not found a compelling response, let alone taken advantage of the failures of the right.’ There is no doubt that across Europe the failure of the social demo- cratic parties to present a ‘compelling response’ to the economic crisis has led to a wave of electoral setbacks.

Vox became the first party to the right of the conservative PP to win seats in a regional election in 2018 and in general elections in April and November of 2019. Vox is currently the third largest political party in the Spanish parliament, bringing an end to Spanish exceptionalism. This thesis addresses the rise of Vox through a conceptual framework of political opportunity structure. The framework allows for multiple explanations to account for Vox’s sudden breakthrough.

PROBLEMS AND PERSPECTIVES OF THE ALLIANCE OF SYRIZA1 Haris Golemis, Nicos Poulantzas Institute (This is a draft. Not to be quoted without permission) 1. SYRIZA (Coalition of the Radical Left) is an alliance of parties, political groups and independent activists, presently represented in the Greek Parliament with 9 deputies (out of 300), after scoring 4,3% at the 2009 elections2. It was established, shortly before the legislative elections of 2004, on the initiative of SYNASPISMOS (Coalition of the Left of Movements and Ecology). Besides Synaspismos, which is by far the largest component, the alliance includes also various small groups (one post Left Eurocommunist, various Trotskyist, one post-Maoist, one ex-PASOK Socialist, one ex-KKE and pro-all Left unity, one Movementist and Human Rights) and independent left personalities and activists, the most prominent of which is Manolis Glezos, the symbol of Greek resistance against Nazi occupation. 2. One could say that SYRIZA has its origins in a process started since the establishment of the Forum of Dialogue and Common Action, in 2001. Almost all political forces now being in SYRIZA participated in this Forum, while activists from some of them (including those who had already worked together in the Euromarches of 1997, the alliance of International Action, the WSF, the ESF and the Greek Social Forum. However, few doubt that the alliance would not have been formed if Synaspismos had not taken the decision to make this important step, which was strange taking into account its identity since its establishment. An understanding of the reasons why a parliamentary party, with a rather moderate majority at that time, decided to coalesce with minor groups of the so-called extreme left is necessary in order to understand both the development of the alliance, but also its problems and perspectives3.

Mix, Analyst in European Affairs ([email protected], 7-9116) Many U.S. officials and Members of Congress consider Spain to be an important U.S. ally and one of the closest U.S. partners in Europe. Spain's April 2019 election returned a fragmented result, but most seated parties favor the continuation of close U.S.-Spain relations. Socialist Party Wins, But No Majority The center-left Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), led by incumbent Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, came in first place in Spain's general election held on April 28, 2019. The PSOE won 123 out of the 350 seats in Spain's Congress of Deputies (lower house of parliament), with nearly 29% of the vote. The center-right Popular Party (PP) came in second place with 66 seats. The election was Spain's third general election in three and a half years. General elections in 2015 and 2016 did not produce a majority government; no single party won a majority of seats, and no combination of parties adding up to a majority was able to agree on forming a coalition government. After a 10-month political deadlock, the PP formed a minority government in late 2016. To form a minority government, a party holding less than half of the seats in parliament negotiates with one or more other parties for their support in reaching the majority threshold needed to win a parliamentary vote of confidence, in return for certain policy concessions.
