Teri Page 5 Page 6 VYC’s Sailing 101 Don and Carol Craske’s ever popular Introduction to Sailing Lessons has been taken over by the ‘three Daves, and Jamie’. For a number of years Don and Carol’s program has been run each spring after the Boat Show and has provided a first sailing experience for many new sailors. The three Daves (and Jamie) will be putting to- gether a similar program for 2011, with details to follow. As in the past, the lessons will include both class- room and on-the-water sessions given by a number of VYC sailors. While the lesson topics are yet to be final- ized, some new ones might include: Dave and Craig’s ‘Voice projection and laughing at sea’; Jamie’s ‘Creative use of tuck tape’; Sandi and Debbie’s ‘Girls sailing around buoys’; Laurence’s ‘Proper use of sun- glasses at sea’; Bob and Ken’s ‘Right-of-way rules for anchored boats’; Bob’s ‘Bob around on boats’; Dave’s ‘wood wood and more wood’; Steve’s ‘Ten foot-itus’; Doug’s ‘Chaos theory’; and, Dave’s ‘Crew manage- ment and motivation for the single handed sailor’. It was then staged for each edition of the Games with the exception of those in St Louis in 1904. Women competed in the mixed sailing events as of 1900. Since the Games of the XXIV Olympiad in Seoul in 1988, some events have been reserved only for them. KEY STAGES Entry 1894: At the Paris Congress held in June, the desire was expressed for nautical sports (rowing, sailing and swimming) to be on the Olympic programme. Windsurfing 1980: At the 83rd IOC Session held in July and August in Moscow, it was decided to add a mixed windsurfing event (windglider) to the programme of the Games of the XXIII Olympiad in Los Angeles in 1984.     OUR READERS AROUND THE WORLD AND A FEW TENS OF 12 YEARS, THOUSANDS 3 BOATS,1 OF MILES 3 CHILDREN Having left as a couple in 2003 for a trip in a monohull, Matthieu and Soizic have had 3 boats, 3 children, and are currently still sailing around the world. The story of a happy and adventurous life! Text and photos: Matthieu Fleury ow beautiful we were, on a warm 1st September 2003 (17°C – a heat wave in H Quimper), on the deck of our pretty ketch. The boat – 38 feet of solid maho- gany, 38 years old, and us – a young cou- ple, under 30, finding it hard to believe that we had succeeded in making our dream come true, so early in our lives, which had hardly begun. From this to believing that 12 years later, we would still be on the deck of a boat, a few thousand miles further on, see- med to us to be not even conceivable. And yet here we are. It took the start of 2 fairly successful careers, to make us realize several things: that life flies by very quickly, and if we merely followed the straight and narrow, it would soon be over, and that it’s best to empty your bank account before Alzheimer’s makes you forget your PIN number. After just 5 years of professional life, we dispensed with the services of our employers, emptied our accounts and bought Hildi, a little gem from 1965, all varnished wood and teak decks, which was dozing in the Medi- terranean, awaiting the arrival of two intrepid Bretons to set off on an adven- ture.

This booklet is only intended as a technical reference, to reinforce sailing lessons. If you're new to sailing, relax—you're in good company. Most new members of the Cal Sailing Club do not know how to sail when they join. Put this book down until later, and go sailing. The club began about a century ago as an offshoot of a loose association of UC students and professors who were interested in sailing. Perhaps there was a manual—who knows? A manual for sailing was put together using a typewriter and hand drawn pictures, distributed in booklet format. The most memorable part was a cartoon telling how to get onto a Lido from the water, showing a shark. Fitting conveniently in a pocket, most copies were turned into pulp during the new owner's first lesson. Sometime in the 1970s.
