“Something Else Besides a Mother”: Stella Dallas and the Maternal Melodrama Linda Williams JCMS: Journal of Cinema and Media Studies, Cinema Journal Retrospective, pp. 2-27 (Article) Published by Michigan Publishing DOI: https://doi.org/10.1353/cj.2018.0091 For additional information about this article https://muse.jhu.edu/article/707330 [ Access provided at 29 Sep 2021 07:56 GMT with no institutional affiliation ] "Something Else Besides a Mother": Stella Dallas and the Maternal Melodrama by Linda Williams Oh, God! I'll never forget that last scene, when her daughter is being married inside the big house with the high iron fence around it and she's standing out there-I can't even remember who it was, I saw it when I was still a girl, and I may not even be remembering it right. But I am remembering it-it made a tremendous impression on me-anyway, maybe it was Barbara Stanwyck. She's standing there and it's cold and raining and she's wearing a thin little coat and shivering, and the rain is coming down on her poor head and streaming down her face with the tears, and she stands there watching the lights and hearing the music and then she just drifts away. How they got us to consent to our own eradication! I didn't just feel pity for her; I felt that shock of recognition-you know, when you see what you sense is your own destiny up there on the screen or on the stage. You might say I've spent my whole life trying to arrange a different destiny!' These words of warning, horror, and fascination are spoken by Val, a character who is a mother herself, in Marilyn French's 1977 novel The Women's Room. -

The American Indian in the American Film
THE AMERICAN INDIAN IN THE AMERICAN FILM Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in American Studies in the University of Canterbury by Michael J. Brathwaite 1981 ABSTRACT This thesis is a chronological examination of the ways in which American Indians have been portrayed in American 1 f.ilms and the factors influencing these portrayals. B eginning with the literary precedents, the effects of three wars and other social upheavals and changes are considered. In addition t-0 being the first objective detailed examination of the subjct in English, it is the first work to cover the last decade. It concludes that because of psychological factors it is unlikely that film-makers are - capable of advancing far beyond the basic stereotypes, and that the failure of Indians to appreciate this has repeatedly caused ill-feeling between themselves and the film-makers, making the latter abandon their attempts at a fair treatment of the Indians. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Preface iii Chapter I: The Background of the Problem c.1630 to c.1900. 1 Chapter II: The Birth of the Cinema and Its Aftermath: 1889 to 1939. 21 Chapter III: World War II and Its Effects: 1940 to 1955. 42 Chapter IV: Assimilation of Separatism?: 1953 to 1965. 65 Chapter V: The Accuracy Question. 80 Chapter VI: Catch-22: 1965 to 1972. 105 Chapter VII: Back to the Beginning: 1973 to 1981. 136 Chapter VIII: Conclusion. 153 Bibliography 156 iii PREFACE The aim of this the.sis is to examine the ways in which the American Indians have been portrayed in American films, the influences on their portrayals, and whether or not they have changed. -

The Grapes of Wrath: a Retrospect on the Folkish Expression of Justice in Popular Culture and Family
The Grapes of Wrath: A Retrospect on the Folkish Expression of Justice in Popular Culture and Family by Neville Buch, member of the Classics Books Club, Brisbane Meet Up 25 April 2020 Figure 1: Cover of ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ by John Steinbeck, 1902-1968, By New York: Viking - image, page, Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=5177527 The Grapes of Wrath: A Popular Culture Retrospect INTRODUCTION The story of rural folk migrating in times of poverty and social injustice seeped well into my childhood history, through three popular cultural forms of entertainment:- several television series in the 1960s, a series of comedy films from the late 1940s and 1950s, and a novel published in 1939 with a classic Hollywood movie the following year. There was in my own family history points of connection to the longer story, which I would only find out many years later. The story told here will move backwards in time, and the historical settings are different; that is the particular point I am making. Different histories are linked by a common theme, and in this case, we are considering the folkish expression on social justice. Retrospectively, we can also see how popular entertainment works to thin-out the social justice message. What starts as a serious educative process of informing the public on important social justice issues, in the end, becomes a mocking and light reflection on life- changing questions. By going backwards, we dig below the surface for the gold, rather than being satisfied in panning for the golden flakes. -
