―I Sing Because I‘m Free‖: Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer D. M. A. Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Crystal Yvonne Sellers Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Loretta Robinson, Advisor Karen Peeler C. Patrick Woliver Copyright by Crystal Yvonne Sellers 2009 Abstract ―I Sing Because I‘m Free‖: Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer With roots in the early songs and Spirituals of the African American slave, and influenced by American Jazz and Blues, Gospel music holds a significant place in the music history of the United States. Whether as a choral or solo composition, Gospel music is accompanied song, and its rhythms, textures, and vocal styles have become infused into most of today‘s popular music, as well as in much of the music of the evangelical Christian church. For well over a century voice teachers and voice scientists have studied thoroughly the Classical singing voice. The past fifty years have seen an explosion of research aimed at understanding Classical singing vocal function, ways of building efficient and flexible Classical singing voices, and maintaining vocal health care; more recently these studies have been extended to Pop and Musical Theater voices. Surprisingly, to date almost no studies have been done on the voice of the Gospel singer. Despite its growth in popularity, a thorough exploration of the vocal requirements of singing Gospel, developed through years of unique tradition and by hundreds of noted Gospel artists, is virtually non-existent. -

Keiko, a male killer whale, Orcinus orca, was transported to the United States and housed at a newly built facility within the Oregon Coast Aquarium (OCA) in January 1 1996. Since that time the animal has been under the care of the OCA and the Free Willy Keiko Foundation (FWKF). Due to the history and popularity of the whale, his health and well being have been subjected to a high degree of public and media scrutiny. In August 1997, after a change in personnel han- dling the day-to day care of Keiko and after conflicting reports of his health status,APHIS was asked to facilitate the formation of an independent panel of marine mammal experts who would assess the current health status of Keiko. -

HART William S. Hart came to the movies in 1914 from a long line of theatrical ex perience, mostly Shakespearean and while to many he is the strong, silent Western hero of film he is also the peer of John Ford as a major force in shaping and developing this genre we enjoy, the Western. In 1889 in what is to become Oklahoma Territory the Cherokee Strip is just a graz ing area owned by Indians and worked day and night be the itinerant cowboys called 'tumbleweeds'. Alas, it is the end of the old West as the homesteaders are moving in . Hart becomes involved with a homesteader's daughter and her evil brother who has a scheme to jump the line as "sooners". Silent Comedies and Cartoons
Funny Business Silent Comedies and Cartoons Tuesday, May 14, 2013 Grand Illusion Cinema The Sprocket Society Seattle, WA Alice Comedies Alice Rattled by Rats Released November 15, 1925 M.J. Winkler Productions Directed and written by Walt Disney. Animated by Ub Iwerks, Rollin Ham Hamilton, Thurston Harper, Hugh Harman, & Rudolf Ising. Produced by Margaret J. Winkler With Margie Gay as Alice. Music and effects soundtrack added by Raytone Productions, 1930 Left to protect Alice’s house, Julius the cat soon falls into a vat of home-brew liquor in the basement and drinks himself into oblivion. The rats, free to play, entertain themselves by dancing, playing phonograph records, cavorting with the player piano, and using the bathtub for a swimming pool. Soon the party gets completely out of control. (Why Alice was brewing alcohol in her basement remains an open question.) “Speaking of his studio in later years, Disney was fond of saying that ‘it all started with a little mouse’ – but in fact the foundation was laid in 1924 by a little girl.” – Merritt & Kaufman, Walt in Wonderland Young Walt Disney broke into the movie business in Kansas City, as an illustrator for a company that produced glass slides and advertising shorts for theaters. Along with his buddy Fred Harman, he struck out on his own, hoping to jump-start their new company with a partly-animated comical short called Laugh-O-Grams, produced for the influential local theater owner, Frank L. Newman. This was successful enough that they were able to secure funding to hire additional animators, including now- legendary pioneers Ubbe “Ub” Iwerks, Hugh Harman, Rudolph Ising, and Friz Freleng. -
