Herlihy Across the United States, cycling is flourishing, not only as a recreational activity but also as a “green” and practical means of urban transportation. The phenomenon is particularly pronounced in Brooklyn, a large and mostly flat urban expanse with a vibrant, youthful population. The current national cycling boom encompasses new and promising developments, such as a growing number of hi-tech urban bike share networks, including Citi Bike, set to launch in New York City in May 2013. Nevertheless, the present “revival” reflects a certain historical pattern in which the bicycle has swung periodically back into, and out of, public favor. I propose to review here the principal American cycling booms over the past century and a half to show how, each time, Brooklyn has played a prominent role. Knowledge of Irish pre-emigration experiences is a key to making sense of their post-emigration lives. This work analyzes the regional origins, the migration and settlement patterns, and the work and associational life of the Catholic Irish in Brooklyn between 1850 and 1900. Over this pivotal half century, the Brooklyn Irish developed a rich associational life which included temperance, Irish nationalism, land reform and Gaelic language and athletic leagues. This era marked the emergence of a more diverse, mature Irish- Catholic community, a community which responded in a new ways to a variety of internal and external challenges. To a degree, the flowering of Irish associational life represented a reaction to the depersonalization associated with American industrialization. However, it also reflected the changing cultural norms of many post-famine immigrants. Unlike their pre-1870 predecessors, these newcomers were often more modern in outlook – more committed to Irish nationhood, less impoverished, better educated and more devout. Consequently, post-1870 immigrants tended to be over-represented in the ranks of associations dedicated to Irish nationalism, Irish temperance, trade unionism, and cultural revivalism throughout Kings County.

On December 16, 2008, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation of Public School 66 (Formerly the Brooklyn Hills School, later the Oxford School, now the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School) (Item No. 3).1 The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Nine people spoke in favor of designation, including New York City Councilmember Elect Elizabeth Crowley, Public School 66 Principal Phyllis Leinwand, and representatives of New York City State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr., the New York City School Construction Authority, the Society for the Architecture of the City, the Historic Districts Council, and the Richmond Hill Historical Society. Two others also spoke in favor of designation. The Commission read a letter in support of designation from Caroline Kennedy. The Commission also received several letters in support of designation from first grade students of the school. There were no speakers in opposition to designation.2 Summary Originally constructed in 1898-9, Public School (P.S.) 66 is a remarkable survivor from a time when Richmond Hill, Queens, was transitioning from a rural farming community into a vibrant residential neighborhood.

The college admits undergraduates solely on merit and awards full-tuition scholarships to all enrolled students.1 The institution provides close contact with a distinguished, creative faculty and fosters rigorous, humanistic learning that is enhanced by the process of design and augmented by the urban setting. Founded in 1859 by Peter Cooper, industrialist and philanthropist, The Cooper Union offers public programs for the civic, cultural and practicable enrichment of New York City. 1 This mission statement was adopted by The Cooper Union Board of Trustees in 2000. For classes enrolling in fall 2014 and thereafter, The Cooper Union provides half-tuition scholarships, plus additional need-based aid.
