The position had been vacant for a dozen years, ever since Ludwig Boltzmann had left it to return to Vienna. The high standards required by the Munich faculty and the paucity of practitioners in theoretical physics led to an almost comical situation in the intervening years, as the job was repeatedly offered to the Austrian in an attempt to lure him back.
