Therefore the main objective of this study is to understand the meaning of empowerment from the world-view of Bidayuh community itself. This study using abductive research strategy and a phenomenology research paradigm which is based on idealist ontology and constructionist epistemology.

  • Rhythm in Bidayuh*
Rhythm in Bidayuh* Calvin R. Rensch SIL International [email protected] The approximately 25 dialects of Bidayuh (Land Dayak) spoken in Sarawak, Malaysia, can be grouped into four clusters of generally intelligible dialects: Eastern, Central, Highland and Western. In both the ultima and penult of the word, there are differences of vowel duration that create contrasting rhythm patterns. Each of the six vowels in the ultima can occur as normal or as lengthened. In the penult only four vowels occur. In most dialects there are two types of penult vowels, full and reduced. A full penult vowel is sustained and has consistent quality. Although no single phonetic feature is present in every instance of a reduced vowel, a reduced vowel frequently is brief, has lax, articulation and lengthens a following consonant. In certain environments a reduced vowel is deleted entirely. The lengthened vowels in the ultima have at least two historical sources: 1) Some lengthened vowels in Central Bidayuh have developed where a medial *g of Proto Bidayuh has dropped out. 2) Some lengthened vowels descended from Proto Bidayuh lengthened vowels have developed where an Austronesian (or Malayo-Polynesian) medial laryngeal has dropped out. The full vs. reduced vowel contrast in the penult seems to be related to differences in accentual pattern in some other AN languages and apparently has developed from accentual differences at an early stage. 1. Introduction Bidayuh, a Land Dayak language, is a network of dialects spoken in the inland sections of the Kuching and Samarahan Divisions in southwestern Sarawak. The approximately 25 dialects can be grouped into four clusters of generally intelligible dialects: Eastern Bidayuh (Bukar-Sadung), Central (Biatah-Penrissen-Lower Padawan), Highland (Tringgus-Sembaan-Upper Padawan) and Western (Singai-Jagoi)1.

MALAYSIA: Scoping Baseline Information for Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade Baseline study 8 By Chen Hin Keong, James Hewitt and Thang Hooi Chiew EU FLEGT Facility Kuala Lumpur January 2012 Regional Support Programme for the EU FLEGT Action Plan in Asia Background The European Commission (EC) published a Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan in 2003. FLEGT aims not simply to reduce illegal deforestation, but in promot- ing good forest governance, aims to contribute to poverty eradication and sustainable management of natural resources. The European Forest Institute (EFI), an international research organisation with its headquarters in Finland, conducts, advocates and facilitates forest research networking at the pan-European level. Under its Policy & Governance programme, the EFI assists in the EU’s implementation of the FLEGT Action Plan. In 2007, the EU FLEGT Facility was established, hosted and managed by the EFI. The Facility (i) supports the bilateral process between the EU and tropical timber-producing countries towards signing and implementing “Voluntary Partnership Agreements” (VPAs) under the FLEGT Action Plan, and (ii) executes the regional support programme for the EU FLEGT Action Plan in Asia. The FLEGT Asia Regional Office (FLEGT Asia) of the EFI’s EU FLEGT Facility was formally estab- lished in October 2009. This paper examines the role and significance of Gawai and Dayung Borih within the Bidayuh community. The data for this study was collected through a series of interviews and participant observations conducted in two villages in the Bau district. The interviews revealed that the concept of Gawai in the olden days was a form of rituals relating human to spiritual beings with the help of the Dayung Borih acting as mediators. The role of Dayung Borih was not only limited to mediators but also healers whereby they performed healing Gawai. The traditional Bidayuh believed that these Dayung Borih were gifted women selected by the spirits themselves. It was a highly respected position within the Bidayuh community but physically, mentally and spiritually demanding for these women. However, the number of Dayung Borih is decreasing and together with it their significant in the community as well as the concept of Gawai, which has changed due to modernisation within the Bidayuh community. Keywords: Bidayuh, priestess, ritual, spirits, communication Introduction The Bidayuh is one of the many ethnic groups residing in the Malaysian Borneo state of Sarawak.
