During the past two years there has been a young man who has worked his heart out for our department. He has stayed after school to take pictures, has scheduled them, and has gone long distances to give you a story in pictures. We of the Journalism Department would like to say "thanks" to our staff photographer - Tom Welch.

The unsung heroes for many departments at West ate Bateman's boys. These boys, from the twelfth grade industrial arts class, work hard at many projects for which they receive no recognition. Such jobs as setting up the bleachers for football games, working on the track, repairing equipment for both boys' and girls' athletic departments, and working on the forest at the new Westmoor school, are just a few of their voluntary con tributions.

Miss Rhoda O'Harra, sewing and math teacher, passed away in December, 1958. The students and faculty of West deeply regret the loss of such a capable in structor.

Via l\eeiivemeni Retiring after thirty years of devoted service to West High, Eorl C. The students and faculty of West High School wish to you, "Pop" Reed, many future years of happiness. A life is just beginning to unfold at fourteen but the characteristics of a jubilant personality, neat appearance, and stalwart smile were apparent in Richard even then. In recent years memories have faded. As we stand on the threshold of a new life and look back, we see those who have helped shape our lives and ease us over the rough spots with laughter. We cannot help but vainly wish that Dick were here to share this moment with us. But beyond our trivial powers to understand, He has chosen to take him from us before Rich ard could face the bright future that now confronts us. ho Q Cot° ° **?' C_..nd

On Friday, October 17, Magley Field was a scene of suspense and excitement as another Homecoming weekend was about to start. Rain earlier in the day did not dampen the spirits of the crowd as members of the court were escorted through lines formed by the band and took their honored seats on the 50 yard line. A touchdown scored by West against Watterson seconds before the end of the second quarter made half-time ceremonies complete. Af ter the band performed in the court's honor, the big moment ar rived. Pam Mobley accepted the bouquet of yellow mums and the title of 1958-1959 Homecoming Queen from Bonnie Mclntire, 1957- 58 Queen. Members of the court, JoAnn Campbell, Rita Dorr, Janet Gove, and Judi Robison, looked on as co-captains Ray Horky and Dave Francis received the tradi tional good-luck kiss. West went on to win the game, 1 3 to 0. The West High Cowboys under the direction of Fred Heischman came through their 1958-59 season with a hard-won 7 and 5 record. West started the year by being defeated the first three games. The Broncs made a smashing comeback by crushing Eastmoor 90 to 52. West was led by Jerry Spears who banged out 45 points to break the previous city league scoring record of 43. The Red Devils of Marion Franklin suffered much the same fate os they were beaten 58 to 44. Being beaten in the next two games we came back to win an overtime thriller from Linden McKinley 59 to 57, Out of the next eight contests our boys won on even split, defeating South, Aquinas, Eastmoor, and Marion Frank lin. Beaten many times in the scoring column, but never beaten in spirit, our Cowboys really earned their fourth nlace berth in the city league.

This year the Distributive Education Club of America wos formed at West. The students are only in school four periods o day before they leave for their positions. As a result they miss many of the social activities. D. E. C. A. was formed to supplement these activities; they have hayrides and parties like any other club. November 1 the club attended the first Regional Conference at the Ohio Union. They elected the officers for the entire D. E. C. A. I Association of Ohio. Late in the year they held a Employer Banquet to which each student 1 F H brought his own boss. Mr. O. D Lehman is the club advisor. "With Helpful Hands and Hearts We Render a Service to the School." The Future Nurses' of America Club al though fairly new to West High can certainly be considered o helpful one. During the year each member devoted some time throughout the week to working in the clinic. These girls aided the school nurse on her assigned days, and saw that every student needing medical aid or rest was taken care of. The club provides partial experience for those students who are interested in the field of nursing as a career. This year the entire club was invited to at tend the Open House at Grant and White Hos pitals on February 22 and March 4 respec tively. This gave the girls the opportunity to see for themselves the advantages the two nursing schools had to offer. The officers for the year were: president, Marilyn Hanger; vice-president, Mary Huff; secretary, Kay Ream; and treasurer, Jane Mc llyar. Miss Helen McCormick was club ad visor.

Four future "ladies in white" apply themselves by working in the clinic at least 2 of their free periods a week. The Irwin F. Young, Chapter of Future Teachers of America has the distinction of be ing the largest in the city. Each program organized by Mike Kagay, was of exceptional interest to the faculty as well as the student members. Guest speakers, Dr. Irwin F. Young, past principal of West; Helen Zielke, an alumni; and Dr. Harold H. Eibling, Superintendent of Columbus Public Schools, proved to be inter esting as well as informative. The F. T. A. members showed their Christ mas spirit by giving the teachers shiny apples. The officers for this year were: Sandy Badgley, president; Mike Kagay, vice-presi dent; Carol Souther, secretary; and Delia Gen try, treasurer. The faculty advisors were Mrs. Davis and Mr. Schneider. The meetings were held the first Friday of every month in 317. Anyone in Senior High who was interested in teaching was invited to attend.

The officers of the Senior Student Council, Dan Morris, Mentor J^tudent L^ounctl president; Dave Morris, vice- president; Gloria Dailey, secre tary; and Judi Robison, treas urer, hod a very big job as heads of the Student Council this year. Along with the guidance of Mr. F. E. Bonar as faculty ad visor and the other members of the council, they consider ed student opinions, provid ed and promoted student leadership, and helped with all of the special occasions. One of the special projects the stu dent council backed this year was the organization of a stu dent court. Scheduled to go in to effect around the third week in September, it will handle all the matters that are usually handled by the office. Among some of the other projects the council sponsored this year were car registrations and the hall monitor system. The council participated in Homecoming, Guys and Dolls Day, Hilltop Relays, Career Day, and the many other spe cial events during the school year. second period meeting No matter how big or small the event, the stage crew is always behind the scenes to see that the show goes on. Each member of the stage crew is selected in their sophomore year by Mrs. Hall, "the guiding light behind all West High performances." Their backstage education consists of preparing equip ment, painting the necessary back drops, operating the lights, drawing the curtains, and even sweeping and cleaning the floors.

Checking signals for a broadcast

Every Monday and Thursday studen heard the advanced radio students givir broadcasts on weekly bulletins. They also gav broadcasts at Christmas, Easter, and othi special events. The most important job of th group was the excellent reporting to the crovs at the football games. "Something for Everyone," the motto for the staff this year, was by all means an ap propriate one. Every effort was made to make the paper more worthwhile and en|oyable to read. Some of the many changes were: less ads to a page, more sports coverage, a dif ferent style for class news, and a variety of entertaining columns. A subscription drive was held at the beginning of the year and prizes were awarded to the winners. Few people realize the hard work and time spent in planning and preparing each issue of the Occident. All writing, proofreading, make-up, page plans, and delivering was handled by editor-in-chief, Freddie Cotter, and her very capable staff. The Business Ad Class, not entirely separate from the journalism staff saw to it that ads were provided and paid for by Hilltop businesses. The staff photographer, Tom Welch, was responsible for the excellent coverage on all major social and sports events. Mr Wilcox, a brand new member of the faculty, is the staff advisor, without whose help and guidance, the paper would not have been a success.

Freddie Cotter, editor, and Mr. Wilco discuss good and bod points of anniversary issue.

Hard work and enthusiasm are the two requirements for each member of the Business Ad. Class. At the beginning of the year Karen Groezinger, the business manager gives each member a list of businessmen on the Hilltop and downtown area to be contacted for adver tising space in the annual and Occident. Each member works independently in meeting his quota, and at the some time gains valuable experience in his contacts with businessmen and merchants. Profits from these contacts provide funds for the publica tions of the Journalism Depart ment.

Karen Groezinger, advertising manager, distributes names of clients. The 1959 Annual, under the leadership of the editor-in-chief Diane Kelsay, had its be ginning in May, 1958. Diane, along with Shir ley Larkin, picture editor, and Nick Merrick, art editor, met throughout the summer to dis cuss the problems and plans to make this An nual a book to be long remembered. In the fall the entire staff began working on their own individual jobs, picture sched ules were set up, and the real work on the Annual began. Of course, there were the many deadlines to be met at various times of the year. The members of the staff, while working hard at all times, learned the value of meeting dead lines, and being reliable and dependable throughout the year. Their time and effort, along with the faculty advisor, Mr. Wilcox, and the ever-present patience of the editor, made possible for you, the students of West High School, the 1959 Annual.

These students are constantly busy dur ing one period each day when they act as assistant librarians. Some of the duties of this staff include: checking books out and locating overdue books, collecting, filing; returning library permits; shelving books and magazines; and taking attendance slips to the office. The majorettes practice many hours all summer vacation; and when the football season commences, they are ready to lead the band through the various formations. Each majorette must have a sparkling personality, plus ability in twirling, marching, strutting, and a fair knowledge of music. Although the majorettes did not twirl in any indoor pep rallies this year, they performed at all the football games and at the Circleville Pumpkin Show on October 16. Some of the girls Susan Weisman were asked to march and do baton routines with the All Ohio Boys Band Head Majorette at the 1958 Ohio State Fair. ^yreatuve

The purpose of the Student Council of West Junior High is to foster a school spirit which will secure good citizenship through the development of school loyalty, good sportsmanship, and social responsibility among the student body. The Student Council sponsored noon dances, the "Council Capers" show, and the annual Guys' and Dolls' Day. In addition to helping the school on all projects, the Student Council gave $100 to the Red Cross, to be used for repairing flood damages.

Benjamin's sixteen points took the junior varsity by a 51 to 38 This leaves the West Jr. squad in fourth place. It is not margin. Barrett Junior High picked up the trend by defeating the championship but, during all the games the boys handled the Broncs 59 to 43. Even after two straight 1 loses the junior themselves like champions in the field of clean ploy and good cowboys struggled back into the winning column as they ran sportsmanship. As a famous man once said "It is not whether over Mohawk 42 to 31. Inspired by this our boys, sparked by the game is won or lost but how it is played." Moyer's 21 points, shut the door in Roosevelt's face 66 to 46 West 49 ! West 38 I West 43 I West 42 J West 66 I West 36 . ' Left to right, first row, Joan Lorenz, ckie Hixon, Kirch.
