Exhibit Panel at Morehouse Historical Museum, Hoffmeister, NY 298 x ABSTRACT Occupying a large portion of Northern New York State, the Adirondack Park includes six million acres of public and private land that compromise over 85 % of all wilderness lands east of the Mississippi. Unique in many ways, the Adirondack Park remains a model for sustainable living and wilderness land management. This dissertation explores the way history is used to both complicate and enrich the relationship between humans and nature in the Adirondack Park. By analyzing historic preservation, cultural landscape management, material culture, and museums this project examines the way that Park history has been told through exhibits, public programs, tours, and commemorations. Chapters explore great camp preservation, the retention of cultural artifacts on state owned wilderness lands, the connection of the Adirondack rustic style to the land, and the increasing environmental focus of regional museums. Together these chapters provide an assessment of public history sites and exhibits in the park that reveals the close yet tenuous relationship between the people and the land.

    WHO TELLS YOUR STORY?: INTERSECTIONS OF POWER, DOMESTICITY, AND SEXUALITY RELATING TO RAP AND SONG IN THE MUSICAL HAMILTON By Tia Marie Harvey A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree Musicology—Master of Arts 2019 ABSTRACT WHO TELLS YOUR STORY?: INTERSECTIONS OF POWER, DOMESTICITY, AND SEXUALITY RELATING TO RAP AND SONG IN THE MUSICAL HAMILTON By Tia Marie Harvey In January 2015, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton: An American Musical premiered at The Public Theater in New York City. Later that year it moved to Broadway with an engagement at the Richard Rodgers Theater, followed by productions in Chicago and London. Commercially successful and critically acclaimed, Hamilton continues to hold significant cultural relevance in 2019. As a result of this musical’s cultural significance, it has the ability to communicate positive, but also limiting, aspects of our society. In this thesis, I examine the concept of rap as a musical language of power. To do this, I assert that characters in Hamilton who have power, and particularly when expressing that power, do so through rap. In contrast, when characters don’t have power, or are entering realms of the powerless (i.e. spaces gendered female), they do so through lyrical song. In chapter 1, I set up the divide between rap and song as it primarily translates among male characters and class. Chapter 2 is focused on the domestic sphere, and in chapter 3 I discuss sexuality. In the conclusion of this thesis, I revisit the character of Eliza and explore the perceived power of her role as storyteller and the way in which the themes I discuss illuminate many missed opportunities to present an interpretation of America’s founding that is truly revolutionary.

Tourism offers the most viable opportunity to diversity and ignite the North Country economy by capitalizing on existing demand to attract a wide variety of private investment that will transform communities. Tourism is already a $1 billion industry in the North Country and with its low upfront investment cost and quicker return on investment that many other industries, it is well- positioned to drive a new North Country economy as well as complement other strategic clusters of economic activity. Year-round tourism promotes a more sustainable, stable economy and more jobs; it’s the most likely growth industry for this region and will help recruit other types of investment. The region has a history of hospitality and several successful tourism hubs in place and exceptional four-season outdoor recreational opportunities are poised to leverage private investment in lodging, restaurant, attraction and other types of tourism related venues. Recognizing the transformative potential that tourism has in the North Country, the Regional Economic development Council is advancing the following strategies: Put tools in place to attract private investment in tourism which will drive demand to revitalize and diversity communities and create a climate that will allow entrepreneurs to flourish. Develop tourism infrastructure to transform the Region by driving community development and leveraging private investment in tourism destination area communities and corridors. The key to these strategies is that they recognize and focus attention on the need to attract and foster development in attractions, facilities and infrastructure conducive to attracting the 21st century traveling public.
