Gallery Notes
Gallery Notes JOHN MITCHELL FINE PAINTINGS LONDON June 2012 Gallery Notes is published to acquaint readers with the paintings and drawings offered for sale by JOHN MITCHELL FINE PAINTINGS 44 O LD BOND STREET , L ONDON W1S 4GB TEL : +44 (0)20 7493 7567 www.johnmitchell.net FOREWORD In March we exhibited at The European Fine Art Fair in Maastricht for the twenty-first consecutive year, and as this remarkable event celebrated its own twenty-fifth birthday, we were encouraged to look back to the early years and draw comparisons with the present. As far as we are concerned, the only significant change is the conspicuous scarcity of fine quality Old Master paintings at the fair today which are new to the market, compared with what was on offer there two decades ago. Then one would arrive and expect to see seven or eight truly outstanding pictures that were hitherto unknown and which would become the talking points of the fair that year; at TEFAF nowadays, it is rare to have more than one painting of this stature. Rather than reflecting any lack of commitment on the part of the exhibitors, this is simply a reflection of today’s market in Old Master paintings. It was sobering to look through the hundreds of pictures in the catalogues of the sales in New York at the beginning of the year and notice that nearly every single lot had been offered for sale at auction at some point in the last thirty or forty years. None of this comes as any surprise to me and my brother, however, since we were brought up in the belief that the best quality Old Master paintings were already rare, and that they were only going to get harder to find. -

Bega, Cornelis Also Known As Bega, Cornelis Pietersz Dutch, 1631/1632 - 1664
National Gallery of Art NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART ONLINE EDITIONS Dutch Paintings of the Seventeenth Century Bega, Cornelis Also known as Bega, Cornelis Pietersz Dutch, 1631/1632 - 1664 BIOGRAPHY Documents indicate that Cornelis Pietersz Bega was born in either 1631 or 1632 in Haarlem.[1] His grandfather was the renowned history painter Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem (Dutch, 1562 - 1638), and his extended family included many other more minor painters, sculptors, and craftsmen. In the spring of 1653 he traveled with the portraitist and still life painter Vincent Laurensz van der Vinne (1628–1702) through Germany, visiting Frankfurt am Main, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, and Basel. Although, like Van der Vinne, he may have intended to continue on to Rome, Bega instead returned to Haarlem in June of that year.[2] He joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1654.[3] Bega died unmarried in 1664 at the young age of 32, likely a victim of the plague that claimed many lives in Haarlem that year.[4] Dutch artist biographer Arnold Houbraken wrote that Bega was the “first and best pupil” of Adriaen van Ostade (Dutch, 1610 - 1685), a painter of low-life genre scenes. Bega similarly specialized in paintings of jovial taverngoers, smokers, quack doctors, alchemists, and musicians, but he also created tender and sympathetic images of peasant families and nursing mothers. Like Ostade, he also produced etchings, and he may have been one of the first Dutch artists to experiment with monotypes. Bega was also a confident draughtsman, and made numerous chalk drawings remarkable for their sculptural quality. Houbraken wrote that Bega and his close friend Leendert van der Cooghen (1632–1681) frequently drew from life together. -
