He further observes that the angels in the present painting are almost interchangeable with Domenichino’s angels of the Evangelists at Sant’Andrea della Valle in Rome, which were copied by Garzi. Garzi’s painting Fucina del Vulcano, now in the Lemme Collection, which is a preparatory sketch for the same subject in Palazzo Bonaccorsi, Macerata, contains the same angels.

Bartolomeo Guidobono’s style brought a lighter, more graceful spirit to late painting in Genoa, which had previously been dominated by the work of his friend and master, Domenico Piola. His treatment of folded drapery, soft lighting and sweet-faced figures influenced by Correggio were immediately received with enthusiasm by the public. By the early 1690s his work was influenced by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, such as the scenes he painted in a small passageway of the Palazzo Rosso, which include figures framed by animals and still-life. It is possible that the animals in the present composition were painted by Domenico Guidobono.

Monsù, a corruption of the French term monsieur, was often used by Neapolitan historians to denote a painter of foreign origin.

In the mid-twentieth century, art historians identified the works previously attributed to Desiderio as being by at least three different painters: François de Nomé, Didier Barra, both originally from Metz, and a third artist, whose name is unknown.

Old Master Paintings | 135 Thomas Kerrich was an antiquary, librarian of Cambridge University and Vicar of Dersingham and Hemisby in his native Norfolk, but he combined this with being an artist both of ability and great versatility. Following his graduation from Magdalene College, Cambridge, he was elected one of Wort’s travelling bachelors, taking him to France, the Low Countries and Italy. Evidence of these travels is found in some of the inscriptions in the present collection, and various juvenile works also confirm his very early interest in drawing. Kerrich was an accomplished miniaturist and one of the earliest lithographers, but his most remarkable trait is the breadth of subject matter that he drew, evidence of an unusually enquiring mind. This group of drawings includes studies of human anatomy, the effects of weather and light on landscape (including, unusually, moonlight studies), portraiture, architecture, life studies, studies after the antique and old master paintings.

He was a discerning collector, and left a group of early royal portraits to the Society of 236 Antiquaries. Various of his other collections went to the British Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. These museums also hold works by Kerrich in their collections, including his original drawings for Gough’s Sepulchral Monuments.
