The Sacred Cave THE SACRED CAVE The CAVE is a cavity inside the earth which may be either natural or artificial in origin. Natural caves come into existence by the action of water or tectonic displacement. Both natural and artificial caves have served humankind in various capacities since time immemorial. Caves are ambiguous spaces, offering both protection and shelter but can also trap and imprison. Because of its location within the earth, which many cultures have identified as female, the cave has been identified as the womb of Mother Earth, and associated with birth and regeneration. Although sacredness may have been invested in many other natural forms and objects (such as trees, mountains, etc.) during the prehistoric period, the earliest known sacred places are naturally-formed caves, such as that at Lascaux in France. In various cultures, caves have been location for the celebration of diverse cults and mysteries, and this was most likely the case at Lascaux. Natural caves have long been a focus of veneration and appear frequently in both mythological and religious stories. The Greek god Zeus was born in a cave on Mount Ida (or Mount Dikte) on the Island of Crete. When excavated in this century, both caves were filled with votive offerings. Sacred caves are found throughout Greece, such as the Corycian Cave at Delphi sacred to the nymph Corycia and Pan [see Pausanias, BIBLIOGRAPHY]. Rites associated with the Phrygian Mother Goddess Cybele took place in caves. A sacred cave may also contain a sacred spring (cf. Water and the Sacred) which may possess special healing or divinatory properties (cf. Lourdes). Famous sacred caves are found in India, at Ajanta, Ellora, and Elephanta which have been embellished with carvings and frescoes [see 1. The Caves of Ajanta and Ellora, 2. Ajanta and Ellora, in German, 3. Elephanta, 4. Ajanta, 5. Ellora]. Besides naturally occurring caves, artificial caves were dug into mountains (cf. Mountains and the Sacred or cliffs (cf. Abu Simbel). Often the mountain itself was also artificial. The pryamids in Egypt were man-made sacred mountains inside of which were created artificial caves (cf. Giza, Egypt). It may be argued that a number of prehistoric megalithic 'burial' mounds, such as Newgrange in Ireland were built to 'house' an artificial cave. Conceived along the same lines are Myceneaen tholos tombs and Etruscan tumuli. The Neoplatonist Porphyry (234-305 CE) explains that before there were temples, religious rites took place in caves. In this sense, it may be argued that temples in ancient Greece and Rome were in some respects man-made substitutes for the cave. It can be pointed out that the cella or naos of a classical temple was not provided with windows, so that the interior space was dark and cave-like (cf. the Athenian Acropolis). One set of doors provided the only access and the only source of natural light. The doors would have been opened on religious occasions, and perhaps at times when the location and angle of the sun (and because the temple was so oriented in the first place) permitted sunlight to penetrate directly into the otherwise dark interior space (such as occurs at Abu Simbel and Newgrange). A cave-like environment is also experienced in Christian Romanesque churches; their dark, gloomy 'Mediterranean' interiors contrasting with the impression of a light-filled forest grove (cf. Trees and the Sacred) which characterizes North European Gothic architecture (cf Chartres). SACRED PLACES is written and produced by Christopher L. C. E.     ROMANIZATION AND SOME CILICIAN CULTS By HUGH ELTON (BIAA) This paper focuses on two sites from central Cilicia in Anatolia, the Cory­ cian Cave and Kanhdivane, to make some comments about religion and Romanization. From the Corycian Cave, a pair of early third-century AD altars are dedicated to Zeus Korykios, described as Victorious (Epinikios), Triumphant (Tropaiuchos), and the Harvester (Epikarpios), and to Hermes Korykios, also Victorious, Triumphant, and the Harvester. The altars were erected for 'the fruitfulness and brotherly love of the Augusti', suggesting they come from the period before Geta's murder, i.e. between AD 209 and 212. 1 These altars are unremarkable and similar examples are common else­ where, so these altars can be interpreted as showing the homogenising effect of the Roman Empire. But behind these dedications, however, may lie a re­ ligious tradition stretching back to the second millennium BC. At the second site, Kanhdivane, a tomb in the west necropolis was accompanied by a fu­ nerary inscription erected by Marcus Ulpius Knos for himself and his family, probably in the second century AD. Marcus then added, 'but if anyone damages or opens [the tomb] let him pay to the treasury of Zeus 1000 [de­ narii] and to the Moon (Selene) and to the Sun (Helios) above 1000 [denarii] and let him be subject to the curses also of the Underground Gods (Kata­ chthoniai Theoi). ' 2 When he wanted to threaten retribution, Knos turned to a local group of gods. As at the Corycian Cave, Knos' actions may preserve traces of pre-Roman practices, though within a Roman framework.

"1 Delphi's business was international in scope: the sanctuary was involved in colonization, arbitration, and panhellenism.2 Yet one important aspect of Delphi's emergence as a panhellenic sanc­ tuary rarely studied is the impact of this extraordinary status on the community of Delphi and its surrounding region. In this paper I propose that, as the sanctuary of Delphi came to repre­ sent order, conciliation, and mediation to the Greeks, the local topography of the region was made to reflect these same themes. Delphi and Mt Parnassus became, through myth and ritual, a landscape in which tensions between wildness and civilization-a polarity at the heart of the culture of the polis­ could be narrated, enacted, and organized. Delphi and Parnas­ sus stood for the polarities from which the polis was construc­ ted. On the one side was Delphi, representing the triumph of order over chaos, as expressed in the myth of the sanctuary's foundation, when Apollo destroys Pytho and brings culture to the original inhabitants of Parnassus (Strab. 9.3.12).     http://akroterion.journals.ac.za DRAGONOLOGY: THE IDEA OF THE DRAGON AMONG THE GREEKS AND THE ZULU M Kirby-Hirst (UNISA) The dragon is one of the most ubiquitous of images — from its appearance in the dreams of individuals to the legendary works of men like J R R Tolkien — it is known across the world but never viewed in the same way. This article takes a Jungian psychoanalytic approach to the dragon as symbol, and juxtaposes two distinct perspectives on the dragon, that of the ancient Greeks (the mythic dragons Typhon and Python in particular) and the Zulu people of South Africa (with special attention given to the place of the python as a possible “dragon” in the practice of divination), in an effort to better understand the creature’s significance to these two cultures and to the world at large. Then a second sign appeared in the sky: there was a huge red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, and each of the seven heads crowned with a coronet. Its tail swept a third of the stars from the sky and hurled them to the ground … (Rev. 12:3-4). In the western world the dragon most often occurs as the perfect expression of malefic and destructive capacity — the dragon of St. John’s vision or the feared Leviathan of Hebrew myth — while in the east dragons can be representative of good fortune. Yet wherever one is in the world, almost every society, past and present, often expresses some concept of the dragon: images of dagger-toothed reptilian beasts abound, with great bat-like wings, poisonous spines, sharp claws, and fiery breath the optional extras filled in by the individual imagination.

DNINE MADNESS AND CONFLICT AT DELPID Orgiastikos, orgasmos, orgastes were secondary formations from orgia. Orgia originally conveyed a neutral meaning describing the cultic dromena, that is calm, unexcited ritual and sacrifice1. Notions of wild, ecstatic performances orgia acquired later when associated with a particular kind of cult. From the 6th century B.e. the word assumed the status of a technical term to describe the 'private' dromena of Demeter's Eleusinian Mysteries, and in particular the mystic rites of Bacchus which provided the route of the word's semantic development2. The mystery movement in the Greek world was an archaic phenomenon, it was then that the special rites of Dionysus began to spring into prominence reflecting the contemporary urge for spiritual union with the divine. Mystery religions had a common factor with inspirational oracles which also belonged to the archaic age rather than to prehistoric times. Inspiration, even enthusiasmos, but not divine or human frenzy : that came later and not before the end of the 5th century B.e.3 Plato defined oracular together with poetic frenzy as forms of mania : for him mantike and manike were etymologically identical4.

The Writing On The Wall: Inscriptions And Memory In The Temples Of Late Antique Greece And Asia Minor Abstract This dissertation documents late antique (fourth to seventh century CE) Christian responses to earlier, pagan inscriptions at sanctuaries, as seen in the archaeological record. I argue that Christians in Greece and Asia Minor neither ignored nor unthinkingly destroyed older inscriptions, but rather were generally tolerant toward these legible reminders of the pagan past, selectively editing them only occasionally. In order to clarify the types of inscriptions that Christians encountered on temple walls and architraves, I have assembled the first catalog of inscriptions on temples, which er veals that the majority of texts inscribed on sacred structures between the seventh century BCE and the third century CE were, counterintuitively, not about religion, but rather civic matters: political privileges, economic/territorial rights, and elite social structures.

    CAVES OF WONDER: THE LEGITIMACY OF THE GROTTO AS A SUBTERRANEAN LANDSCAPE ELEMENT by VANESSA D. BERNSTEIN (Under the Direction of Marianne Cramer) ABSTRACT This thesis explores the relevance of the grotto as an architectural type through time and will propose design possibilities for continuing this tradition in the twenty first century. Specifically, it investigates grotto works from the classical period through the twentieth century. Emphasis will be placed on the form, meaning, and purpose of the grotto as an underground chamber or passage. This thesis also considers the grotto as a platform for theoretical speculation on the implications of designing below the earth’s surface. The final component of the thesis is a design application comprised of three stories with corresponding collages that portray the design process for grotto inspired structures.
