Paloma Faith to Headline Stadiwm Zip World July 14 PALOMA FAITH STEPS OUTSIDE WITH HER NO.1 ALBUM ‘THE ARCHITECT’ AT STADIWM ZIP WORLD, COLWYN BAY Orchard Entertainment bring BRIT Award winner Paloma Faith and her stunning live show to the Stadiwm Zip World, Colwyn Bay on Saturday the 14th of July 2018 as part of her UK summer tour. Tickets go on general sale from Friday the 2nd of February at 9am through Ticketmaster.co.uk; in person from Venue Cymru; or by calling the Venue Cymru Box Office on 01492 872000. With her acclaimed Number 1 album ‘The Architect’ riding high in the charts and a BRIT nomination for Best British Female, Paloma Faith has announced a must-see 20 date UK summer tour. So far ‘The Architect’ has spent eight weeks in the Top 10, propelled by the poptastic single ‘Crybaby’, the stunning ‘Guilty’ and latest single ‘Till I’m Done’. The new album has already gone Gold in the UK and she is only one of two British female artists this decade to have their first three albums go double platinum in the UK! Equally at home onstage and in the studio, these shows will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the summer season. Her latest release ‘The Architect’ became her first UK #1, cutting Taylor Swift’s reign short. The new album – her first in more than three years and since giving birth to her first child – features an array of acclaimed co-writers, producers and collaborators including: Sia, John Legend, Rag'n'Bone Man and actor Samuel L. Jackson. ‘The Architect’ follows the huge success of Paloma’s last album, ‘A Perfect Contradiction’, which spent 29 weeks in the Top 10 Albums chart, 66 weeks in the Top 40, and 100 weeks in the Top 200. The epic lead single from the record, ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’, is Paloma’s biggest-seller to date, with over half a million copies sold and 55 million streams on Spotify. This resulted in Paloma winning the BRIT Award for British Female Solo Artist in 2015. The July 14 concert is the first in the newly named Stadiwm Zip World, and promoted by two-time UK Regional Promoter of the Year, Orchard Entertainment, who have brought an array of stars to Colwyn Bay over the past seven years. Orchard director Pablo Janczur said: “We’ve set a precedent for big name artists in the stadium over the years, so we’re delighted we’ve been able to attract another high calibre performer for 2018. Paloma is one of the country’s highest profile artists at the moment, appealing to a broad fan base. It’ll be another cracker!” The concert is supported by Conwy County Borough Council and Bay of Colwyn Town Council. Media partners are Heart FM. Cllr Louise Emery is the Cabinet Member for Economic Development and said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming Paloma Faith to Colwyn Bay. “Events in Conwy County have proved to be vital to the area’s economy, and the annual concerts at Stadiwm Zip World at Parc Eirias are an example of that. The investment that has gone into the area in recent years has helped Conwy become one of the most thriving events and visitor locations in the UK.” Further artists on the bill will be announced in due course. BUILDING COLD WAR WARRIORS: SOCIALIZATION OF THE FINAL COLD WAR GENERATION Steven Robert Bellavia A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2018 Committee: Andrew M. Schocket, Advisor Karen B. Guzzo Graduate Faculty Representative Benjamin P. Greene Rebecca J. Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

  • Marie Collier: a Life
Marie Collier: a life Kim Kemmis A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History The University of Sydney 2018 Figure 1. Publicity photo: the housewife diva, 3 July 1965 (Alamy) i Abstract The Australian soprano Marie Collier (1927-1971) is generally remembered for two things: for her performance of the title role in Puccini’s Tosca, especially when she replaced the controversial singer Maria Callas at late notice in 1965; and her tragic death in a fall from a window at the age of forty-four. The focus on Tosca, and the mythology that has grown around the manner of her death, have obscured Collier’s considerable achievements. She sang traditional repertoire with great success in the major opera houses of Europe, North and South America and Australia, and became celebrated for her pioneering performances of twentieth-century works now regularly performed alongside the traditional canon. Collier’s experiences reveal much about post-World War II Australian identity and cultural values, about the ways in which the making of opera changed throughout the world in the 1950s and 1960s, and how women negotiated their changing status and prospects through that period. She exercised her profession in an era when the opera industry became globalised, creating and controlling an image of herself as the ‘housewife-diva’, maintaining her identity as an Australian artist on the international scene, and developing a successful career at the highest level of her artform while creating a fulfilling home life. This study considers the circumstances and mythology of Marie Collier’s death, but more importantly shows her as a woman of the mid-twentieth century navigating the professional and personal spheres to achieve her vision of a life that included art, work and family.

  • Purple Disco Machine Has Been on a Whirlwind of a Musical Journey Since the 2009 Conception of His Highly Successful Disco House Music Project
International DJ, producer and remixer Tino Piontek aka Purple Disco Machine has been on a whirlwind of a musical journey since the 2009 conception of his highly successful disco house music project. The Dresden-born artist has racked up numerous achievements, although it was his 2013 breakthrough hit ‘My House’, on OFF Recordings, that really propelled Purple Disco Machine into new heights; landing the #1 spot within Beatport’s deep house chart and, at its peak, #3 overall. The track remains one of Beatport’s best ever sellers and Purple Disco Machine ranks #18 in the online retailer’s all- time Top 100 Artists chart. Since then, the German native has continued to recreate his previous chart domination with a series of original tracks including; his collaborations with Boris Dlugosch on Defected, ‘L.O.V.E.’ and ‘Set It Out’, his collaborations with Aeroplane on Spinnin’ Deep, ‘Sambal’ and ‘Counting On Me’ featuring Aloe Blacc, plus his incredible double Pete Tong Essential New Tunes, ‘Yo’ on Kittball and the unforgettable ‘Magic’ on Exploited. As well as boasting an impressive back-catalogue of solo and collaborative productions, Purple Disco Machine has also offered up remixes for numerous A-list musicians, including: Jamiroquai, Two Door Cinema Club, New Order, Claptone, Tom Odell, Faithless, Shapeshifters, Hercules & Love Affair, Sigma Feat. Paloma Faith, Blonde and most recently, Gorillaz – reworking ‘Andromeda’ off their latest LP, ‘Humanz’. However, it’s important to mention that Purple Disco Machine’s impressive disco house grooves might not have even existed if it wasn’t for his father introducing him, at an early age, to the classic funk sounds of the 70s and 80s.
