Hussain Ibrahim Al Hammadi, UAE Minister of Education, the virtual 2021 Graduate Students Research Conference (GSRC) will be inaugurate on 28th June 2021. The GSRC is an exciting interdisciplinary academic event that showcases the research being conducted at universities across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and by their international partners. The conference will provide excellent opportunities for graduate students to share their research work with their peers, receive constructive scholarly feedback, and establish professional networks for future collaboration. The event will also enable graduate students to present their innovative projects and ideas to diverse sectors of industry and government and receive feedback on practical aspects that may enhance the value of their research. Prospective graduate students will also benefit from the GSRC as they will be in an excellent position to learn about the different research opportunities available at the participating academic institutions. www.uaegsrc.ae 1 Welcome Messages 2 معالي المهندس حسين إبراهيم الحمادي وزير التربية والتعليم في دولة الإمارات نائب رئيس مجلس أمناء جامعة خليفة للعلوم والتكنولوجيا السيدات والسادة الحضور، السلام عليكم ورحمة هللا وبركاته. يسرني أن أرحب بكم في مؤتمر أبحاث طلبة الدراسات العليا 2021 الافتراضي في نسخته السادسة. تعتبر البحوث في الدراسات العليا أحد المحركات الرئيسة لاقتصاد المعرفة، حيث تساهم في إيجاد حلول مبتكرة لمختلف التحديات التي تواجهها الصناعات والقطاعات الحيوية يهدف هذا المؤتمر المرموق بشكل رئيس في العالم بشكل عام، وفي الدولة بشكل خاص. إلى توفير منصة لطلبة الدراسات العليا لمشاركة نتائج مشاريعهم البحثية المبتكرة في العديد من المجالات المتميزة والمهمة، كما يساهم المؤتمر في تشجيع الطلبة على مواصلة دراستهم على مستوى الدراسات العليا وأبحاثهم المتطورة سواء أكانت بمستوى درجة الماجستير أو الدكتوراه. وتساهم البحوث المتقدمة التي يجريها طلبة الدكتوراه على وجه الخصوص في تطوير المعرفة التي تساهم في إيجاد حلول للمشاكل في مختلف المجالات، الأمر الذي يعزز من مكانة دولة الإمارات كمساهم فاعل في خلق المعرفة، الأمر الذي سيعود بالفائدة على مختلف القطاعات الاقتصادية في الدولة. ويساهم هذا المؤتمر في إطلاع طلبة الدراسات العليا على الأبحاث التي يتم إجراؤها في المجالات المختلفة في الجامعات المشاركة، كما يعتبر المؤتمر منصة تساعد الطلبة وأعضاء الهيئة الأكاديمية من مختلف الجامعات في الدولة على تحديد مجالات التعاون البحثي، بالإضافة إلى أنه يوفر فرصة لإجراء البحوث متعددة التخصصات تساهم في إيجاد حلول لمختلف المشاكل المعقدة التي يواجهها العالم. ولعل من أهم ما يميز هذا المؤتمر أنه يعتبر مظلة تجمع تحته طلبة الدراسات العليا لعرض أوراقهم البحثية من عدة مجالات تشمل الهندسة والعلوم والآداب والدراسات الإنسانية والعلوم الاجتماعية وإدارة الأعمال والعلوم الصحية والطبية، ويشهد عرض أبحاث متطورة تلمس نوا ٍح متعددة ذات أهمية كبيرة للدولة والعالم مثل المشاريع التي تخدم الثورة الصناعية الرابعة ومشاريع في علم الوراثة وأبحاث السرطان والأوبئة وفي الأمراض الأكثر انتشا ًرا كمرض السكري وأمراض القلب وفي مجالات ذات أهمية اقتصادية واستراتيجية كالطاقة المتجددة والاستدامة وتحلية المياه والاستفادة من تكنولوجيا النانو والذكاء الاصطناعي والروبوتات، بالإضافة إلى الأبحاث المختلفة في مجالات التربية واللغويات وغيرها. نشكر جميع من شارك في إثراء هذا المؤتمر وأخص بالشكر جامعة خليفة والفرق القائمة على تنظيمه وإنجاحه بهدف تقديم الدعم والمساندة لطلبتنا، ونتمنى للجميع كل التوفيق. وشك ًرا. 3 His Excellency Engineer Hussein Ibrahim AlHammadi UAE Minister of Education Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Khalifa University Ladies and Gentlemen, It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the 6th edition of the virtual Graduate Students Research Conference 2021. Research in graduate studies is the main driving factor behind the transition to knowledge-economy, as it contributes to finding innovative solutions that tackle all challenges faced by critical sectors and industries in the world in general, and particularly in the UAE. This prestigious conference mainly aims at creating a platform for postgraduate students to share the results of their innovative research projects in several vital areas. The conference will help in encouraging students to pursue their studies and take research to a higher level, whether for Master’s or PhD degrees. Advanced research conducted by PhD students in particular can help in developing knowledge that in return can contribute to finding solutions in many areas, which will effectively enhance the UAE’s status in creating knowledge and benefiting different economic sectors in the country. One major feature that leads to the uniqueness of this conference is that it serves as an umbrella for all postgraduate students to showcase their research in many fields including engineering, science, arts, human and social studies, business administration and medical and health sciences. Showcasing these advanced research will help tackle many different aspects of great importance to the country, such as projects that contribute to the 4th Industrial Revolution, projects in genetic science, cancer and epidemic research, in addition to the most common medical conditions like diabetes and heart diseases. They also serve areas of high economic and strategic importance including renewable energy, sustainability, desalination, nanotechnology and artificial intelligence and robotics, as well as many research areas that serve education, and linguistics. My sincere thanks to all the participants who have enriched this conference through their research inputs. Most importantly, I thank Khalifa University and all the partners and stakeholders who have contributed to successfully organizing this conference, and supporting the students. Good luck and thank you, 4 الدكتور عارف سلطان الحمادي رئيس اللجنة التوجيهية لمؤتمر أبحاث طلبة الدراسات العليا نائب الرئيس التنفيذي لجامعة خليفة للعلوم والتكنولوجيا معالي حسين إبراهيم الحمادي، وزير التربية والتعليم الزملاء والشركاء من القطاع الحكومي والأكاديمي والبحثي كرئيس اللجنة التوجيهية لمؤتمر أبحاث طلبة الدراسات العلياـ يسرني أن أرحب بكم ًجميعا في هذا المؤتمر. تفخر جامعة خليفة بتنظيم واستضافة مؤتمر أبحاث طلبة الدراسات العليا 2021 الذي يهدف إلى توفير الفرص لطلبة الدراسات العليا لمشاركة بحوثهم مع زملائهم الطلبة وأعضاء الهيئة الأكاديمية وجميع أعضاء المؤتمر. وتفخر جامعة خليفة ًأيضا بتنظيمها للمؤتمر للمرة الثالثة منذ انطلاقه للمرة الأولى في العام 2015. فمنذ ذلك الوقت، تمكن مؤتمر أبحاث طلبة الدراسات العليا من إثبات تميزه كمؤتمر أكاديمي متعدد التخصصات يسعى لتوفير منصة لمشاركة البحوث التي يتم إجراؤها في جميع جامعات الدولة بالتعاون مع الشركاء الدوليين. يعتبر مؤتمر أبحاث طلبة الدراسات العليا منصة لطلبة الدراسات العليا تتيح لهم عرض أعمالهم البحثية وأفكارهم ومشاريعهم المبتكرة للعديد من مجالات المعرفة. ويعد هذا العام السادس للمؤتمر. السيدات والسادة، تسعدنا الإشارة إلى أن هذا العام تم تقديم 435 ورقة بحثية والاطلاع عليها بشكل منفصل من قبل أعضاء الهيئات الأكاديمية في الجامعات المشاركة، حيث أوصت لجنة البرنامج التقنية بالموافقة على ما مجموعه 354 ورقة بحثية و ًفقا للعرض الشفوي خلال المؤتمر. وتشكل الأوراق البحثية التي أجريت على أيدي طلبة من تخصصات علوم الهندسة والفيزياء والعلوم الطبية والطب التحضيري وعلوم الصحة والحياة نسبة %80، إضافة لعدد كبير من الأوراق التي ضمت تخصصات الآداب والعلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية وإدارة الأعمال. وسيقوم المؤتمر باختيار أفضل الأوراق البحثية من مختلف التخصصات وتكريمها، كممارسة ّنتبعها كل عام. وفي الختام، أود أن أتوجه بالشكر والتقدير لجميع أعضاء اللجنة التوجيهية واللجنة التنظيمية والمراجعين لدعمهم وتعاونهم متمنيًا التوفيق للجميع في هذا المؤتمر، ًشكرا، 5 Dr Arif Sultan Al Hammadi UAE GSRC Steering Committee Chair Executive Vice President of Khalifa University Your Excellency Hussain Ibrahim Al Hammadi, UAE Minister of Education… Colleagues and stakeholders in the government, academic and research sectors, students and faculty members of universities from across the UAE. As Chairman of the UAE GSRC’s Steering Committee, it is indeed a great pleasure to welcome you all to the 2021 UAE Graduate Students Research Conference. Khalifa University is proud to organize and host the 2021 UAE GSRC, which aims to provide opportunities for graduate students to share their research work amongst themselves, faculty and the community. We are also proud that Khalifa University is organizing this event for the third time since GSRC was first organized in 2015. Since then, the UAE GSRC has established itself as an exciting interdisciplinary academic event, which offers a platform to share the research being conducted at universities across the UAE, and their international partners. For graduate students, the UAE GSRC provides an avenue to showcase their scholarly research work and innovative ideas and projects to various fields of knowledge. This is the 6th year of the UAE Graduate Students Research Conference. Ladies and gentlemen, We are very pleased to point out that this year 435 research papers were submitted, and reviewed independently by faculty from the participating universities. The technical program committee recommended accepting a total of 354 research papers for oral presentation at the 2021 UAE Graduate Students Research Conference. FA Chapter 7 Immersive journalism: The new narrative Doron Friedman and Candice Kotzen Immersive journalism is a subcategory of journalism that uses virtual reality (VR) and similar technologies to provide those engaging in such technologies with a sense of being wholly engrossed in the news story, thus allowing the news audience to form a direct impression of the ambience of the story. This chapter is intended to serve as a primer of VR use for news storytelling for individuals with an interest or background in journalism. The first section presents some essential background on VR and related technologies. Next, we present some research findings on the impact of VR, and review some of the early work in immersive journalism. We conclude by delineating a collection of thoughts and questions for journalists wishing to enter into this new exciting field. 1. The Technology More than 50 years after the first demonstration of virtual reality (VR) technologies [Sutherland, 1965], it is apparent that VR is on the brink of becoming a form of mass media as VR documentary and journalism has been a central theme. Triggered by Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus Rift in 2014, the technology industry launched the race to deliver compelling VR hardware, software, and content. In this chapter, we present the essential background for non-experts who are intrigued by immer- sive journalism. For a recent comprehensive review of VR research in general, we recommend Slater and Sanchez-Vives [2016]. Relevant issues from this review are elaborated below.

    ADVANCED VOLUMETRIC CAPTURE AND PROCESSING O. Schreer, I. Feldmann, T. Ebner, S. Renault, C. Weissig, D. Tatzelt, P. Kauff Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, Berlin, Germany ABSTRACT Volumetric video is regarded worldwide as the next important development step in media production. Especially in the context of rapidly evolving Virtual and Augmented Reality markets, volumetric video is becoming a key technology. Fraunhofer HHI has developed a novel technology for volumetric video: 3D Human Body Reconstruction (3DHBR). The 3D Human Body Reconstruction technology captures real persons with our novel volumetric capture system and creates naturally moving dynamic 3D models, which can then be observed from arbitrary viewpoints in a virtual or augmented reality scene. The capture system consists of an integrated multi-camera and lighting system for full 360 degree acquisition. A cylindrical studio has been developed with a diameter of 6m and it consists of 32 20MPixel cameras and 120 LED panels that allow for arbitrary lit background. Hence, diffuse lighting and automatic keying is supported. The avoidance of green screen and provision of diffuse lighting offers best possible conditions for re-lighting of the dynamic 3D models afterwards at design stage of the VR experience. In contrast to classical character animation, facial expressions and moving clothes are reconstructed at high geometrical detail and texture quality. The complete workflow is fully automatic, requires about 12 hours per minute of mesh sequence and provides a high level of quality for immediate integration in virtual scenes. Meanwhile a second, professional studio has been built up on the film campus of Potsdam Babelsberg. This studio is operated by VoluCap GmbH, a joint venture between Studio Babelsberg, ARRI, UFA, Interlake and Fraunhofer HHI.

Signature: ii ABSTRACT Natasha Dinyar Mody ‘Demystifying the Future of the Screen’ Master of Design, Digital Futures, 2018 OCAD University Demystifying the Future of the Screen explores the creation of a 3D representation of volumetric display (a graphical display device that produces 3D objects in mid-air), a technology that doesn’t yet exist in the consumer realm, using current technologies. It investigates the conceptual possibilities and technical challenges of prototyping a future, speculative, technology with current available materials. Cultural precedents, technical antecedents, economic challenges, and industry adaptation, all contribute to this thesis proposal. It pedals back to the past to examine the probable widespread integration of this future technology. By employing a detailed horizon scan, analyzing science fiction theories, and extensive user testing, I fabricated a prototype that simulates an immersive volumetric display experience, using a holographic display fan.

The book, ‘Men, Matters and Memories’ is a collection of memories that father used to publish each week in his English newspaper, ‘The Aden Chronicle’; they date from 1960, 1961, 1962. Other articles in the series sadly have either been lost or are in too poor a condition, ancient, and fragile to be retyped ready for publication. My father used the spelling of his name as Lokman in all his English writings. It was almost 40 years after my father’s passing when, the project of collecting, archiving, and publishing his papers, books, photographs, speeches, and radio recordings, was initiated by my brother Maher Muhammed Ali Luqman. He had managed to rescue a large amount of the material already but through publicity and reward he collected other works that had been lost. This initial stage took a lot of time, money, and effort but once completed Maher approached Dr Ahmed Ali Alhamadani and invited him to take on the next stage of researching the material and preparing it for printing and publication. This was also a time consuming, costly, and dedicated effort which has meant that father’s works are now available to anyone who wishes to access his legacy.

Going beyond the application of free-viewpoint volumetric video, we allow re-animation and alteration of an actor’s performance through (i) the enrichment of the captured data with semantics and animation properties and (ii) applying hybrid geometry- and video-based animation methods that allow a direct animation of the high-quality data itself instead of creating an animatable model that resembles the captured data. Semantic enrichment and geometric animation ability are achieved by establishing temporal consistency in the 3D data, followed by an automatic rigging of each frame using a parametric shape- adaptive full human body model. Our hybrid geometry- and video-based animation approaches combine the flexibility of classical CG animation with the realism of real captured data. For pose editing, we exploit the captured data as much as possible and kinematically deform the captured frames to fit a desired pose.
