DR. ANDREW BLAKE Former Laboratory Director, Microsoft Research Cambridge Former Director of the Alan Turning Institute Chair of the Samsung AI Centre

Andrew Blake is a pioneer in the development of the theory and algorithms that make it possible for computers to behave as seeing machines. He is especially interested in segmentation as optimization, in visual tracking as probabilistic inference, and in real-time, 3D vision. He was an academic for 18 years, in Edinburgh and Oxford, ultimately as Professor of Information Engineering at Oxford University. He joined Microsoft in 1999 to found the Computer Vision group in Cambridge before becoming Director of Microsoft’s Cambridge Laboratory in 2010 and a Microsoft Distinguished Scientist.

Currently he is a consultant in Artificial Intelligence. In particular he is Chairman of Samsung’s AI Research Centre SAIC in Cambridge, UK. He is consultant and Scientific Adviser to the FiveAI autonomous driving company and serves as an adviser to Siemens.

DR. MARY COLLINS Provost, OIST

Prof. Collins studied Biochemistry at Cambridge University then moved to the University of London at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund for her Ph.D. Prof. Collins worked as a post-doctoral fellow on molecular immunology at University College London, then at the Whitehead Institute, MIT. She started her own group at the Institute of Cancer Research in 1987. Collins moved to University College London as Professor of Immunology in 1997. From 2005 to 2015 she was Director of Britain’s Medical Research Council Centre for Medical Molecular Virology. After heading the Division of Infection and Immunity at University College London for 10 years, Collins was Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences at University College London from 2009 until 2014. In September 2014 Prof. Collins took up a position at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control to head a new Division of Advanced Therapies.

Dr. Kenji Doya is a Professor in the Neural Computation United at OIST. He has received numerous awards for his research including the Donald O. Hebb Award, International Neural Network Society (2018), a Commendation for Science and Technology, Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (2012), the Brainscience Award on Creativity (2009), the Nakaaki Tsukahara Memorial Award (2007), and the JSPS Award (2007). From 1999-2002 he served as Vice President, Japanese Neural Network Society, and from 1999-2003 he was Director of the Neuro-Informatics Summer School. He has also served on the Board of Governors of the International Neural Network Society.

MS. SHOKO FARMER Senior Project Manager, Russell Investments

Ms. Shoko Farmer grew up in Okinawa and attended the University of the Ryukyus. She currently works as a Senior Project Manager at Russell Investments in Washington State. She has been deeply engaged with the Japan-America Society of Washington State.

DR. PETER GRUSS President and CEO, OIST

Peter Gruss ranks among the most productive scientists in his field, with more than 500 publications. He has received numerous awards for his scientific achievements, including the of the German Research Foundation, the Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine, the Deutscher Zukunftspreis (German President’s Award for Innovation in Science and Technology) and the Lower Saxony State Prize.

Gruss became President of the in 2002. Securing ‘high-trust’ funding from German federal and state governments, he was able to launch eight new Max Planck Institutes addressing innovative topics such as the biology of aging, the physics of light and empirical aesthetics. He also established two Max Planck Institutes overseas, in Florida, U.S., and Luxembourg. The establishment of the Max Planck Foundation took place in 2006 and supports projects and scientists of the Max Planck Society.

A pioneer in the internationalization of research and education, Gruss expanded the presence of the Max Planck Society abroad. Max Planck Partner Institutes were established in Buenos Aires and Shanghai. He also established 14 Max Planck Centers around the world in cooperation with major scientific institutions.

Gruss is a leader in technology transfer and innovation. At the Max Planck Society, he strengthened Max Planck Innovation, channeling inventions from Max Planck Institutes to industry and helping scientists register patents and create companies. Business incubators were created in four German cities, taking research findings to market maturity. He co-founded a biopharmaceutical company and serves as Chair of the Siemens Technology and Innovation Council.

OIST Foundation First Year Anniversary Gala 06 MR. KARÉN HAKOBYAN Pianist & Founder and Artistic Director, Pegasus: The Orchestra

Armenian-American pianist and composer Karén Hakobyan has emerged as a versatile force on the international music scene. Since his Carnegie Hall debut at the age of seventeen, he has been performing in major concert halls in Armenia, Argentina, Mexico, , France, Japan and the United States. Karén won a Bronze Medal in the World Piano International Competition, 1st prize in the Pinault International Audiotape – Videotape Piano Competition and 2nd prize in the Armenian Legacy Pianists International Piano Competition. Karén is the Founder and Artistic Director of Pegasus: The Orchestra based in New York City, and he is also the Cultural Program Advisor of Armenia Fund, USA.

MS. NINA HARANO Undergraduate, Columbia University

Ms. Hirano is a sophomore at Columbia University in New York City. Having grown up in Okinawa, Nina participated in the International School of Science Japan, a summer camp hosted at OIST, and the OIST Summer Mentoring program. These inspired her to pursue academic studies in neuroscience in the United States. She hopes to become a Ph.D. student at OIST one day.

MR. DAVID P. JANES Senior Advisor to the President for Institutional Development, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) Managing Director, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Foundation (OIST Foundation)

Mr. Janes leads OIST’s strategic development efforts in the United States and Japan, assists OIST in fostering relationships and building networks with leaders in U.S.-Japan relations, scientific and technology focused foundations, and cutting-edge corporations in both countries, and provides strategic advice to OIST’s President and senior leadership. Aiming to be among the world’s top science and technology universities and one of the most innovative educational institutions in the Asia-Pacific region, OIST is poised to make significant contributions to the sustainable development of Okinawa, to scientific research in Japan, and to science and technology globally. With a dynamic tech transfer program and incubator, the University is also focused on enhancing entrepreneurship in Okinawa and other areas of Japan.

Previously David was Director of Foundation Grants and Assistant to the President at the United States-Japan Foundation, where he led the Foundation’s multi-million dollar grant-making program and served as the public face of the Foundation to potential and current grantees in the U.S. and Japan.

OIST Foundation First Year Anniversary Gala 07 MR. JAMES HIGA Executive Director, Philanthropic Ventures Foundation

Mr. Higa has had a long and storied career in Silicon Valley. He reported directly to Steve Jobs at Apple, working to change the face of technology and entire industries. He was a member of the original Macintosh team. His work negotiating and launching iTunes changed music forever. He still has one foot in tech as Mentor in Residence at Index Ventures, whose investments include the likes of Dropbox, Slack, Facebook, and Skype. As Executive Director of Philanthropic Ventures Foundation, he aspires to make a dent in society’s most pressing problems through people, communities, and radical collaboration.

DR. YUKO KAKAZU Astronomer & Outreach Specialist, Subaru Telescope Trustee, OIST Foundation

Dr. Yuko Kakazu is an Astronomer and Outreach Specialist at the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii. She was born and raised in Okinawa. She first became interested in astronomy when she attended the NASA U.S. Space Camp program at the age of 13.

Dr. Kakazu graduated from Tohoku University in Japan and then obtained her Ph.D. at the Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. Since then, she has worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Paris, France (Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris), California (California Institute of Technology), and Chicago (University of Chicago). Her research focuses on metal-poor galaxies and distant galaxies in order to understand galaxy formation and chemical enrichment history.

Besides her scientific work, Dr. Kakazu also gives talks and lectures to the public at outreach events and enjoys sharing her knowledge of astronomy with kids. She is a lover of jazz and classical music, a certified Zumba instructor and a practitioner of karate.

MS. EIKO KANO Violinist & OIST Foundation Music Ambassador

Praised as an artist with “electrifying intensity and lyrical expression” by Kyoto Newspaper and “mesmerizing interpreter” by Ongakuno-Tomo Magazine, Japanese violinist Eiko Kano is known for her sensational and dynamic performances. Eiko has a thriving international career as a soloist as well as a chamber musician frequently collaborating with distinguished artists such as principal oboist of the Berlin Philharmonic Albrecht Meyer, Eugene Drucker of the Emerson Quartet and Ani Kavafian while working closely with living composers premiering new works.

She has won top prizes at multiple international competitions such as the 4th International Competition of Tokyo. As a result of winning the prestigious Forval Scholarship, Eiko was granted the Stradivarius “Reinville” violin for two years. She currently serves as an assistant concertmaster in Grammy Award-winning Albany Symphony Orchestra as well as regularly playing in the New York Philharmonic. Eiko is the concertmaster and senior artistic advisor of Pegasus: The Orchestra based in New York.

OIST Foundation First Year Anniversary Gala 08 HONORABLE ROBERT KOEPCKE Consul General of the U.S. to Naha, Okinawa

A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Robert was born in Delaware, grew up in Pennsylvania, and has family roots in Wisconsin and Oklahoma. Since joining the State Department in 2001, Robert has served overseas in Tokyo, Baghdad, Beijing, and Berlin, as well as at the American Institute in Taiwan, Taipei. He was Director for Japan and Asian Regional Economic Affairs at the National Security Council in the White House from 2012-13. Robert also worked closely with Japan during back-to-back APEC host years for Japan and the United States during 2010-11.

As a graduate student at the London School of Economics, Robert researched the Japanese economy and studied Japanese language in Osaka through a generous grant from the Japan Foundation. Before joining the State Department, Robert worked in the semiconductor industry. After graduating from Boston University in 1993, he participated in the JET program in Aino-machi, Nagasaki-ken.

MINISTER KONO TARO Minister of State for Okinawa and Northern Territories Affairs Minister for Regulatory Reform and Administrative Reform

Minister Kono has been elected eight times to the House of Representatives in Japan. Among positions he has held are Minister of Defense; Minister of Foreign Affairs; Chairman of the National Public Safety Commission, or Minister in charge of the National Police Organization, Minister for Administrative Reform, Minister for Civil Service Reform, Minister for Regulatory Reform; Minister in Charge of Consumer Affairs and Food Safety; and Minister in Charge of Disaster Management in the Abe Government, Parliamentary Secretary for Public Management, and Senior Vice-Minister of Justice in the Koizumi Government; and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives. Taro is a graduate of the School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University. He was Chairman of the Japan Race Horse Association and Chairman of the Shonan Bellmare Football Club, the 1995 Asia Champion Soccer Club.

MASTER GRANT “SANDAA” MURATA Shihan (Master Instructor), Ryukyu Koten Afuso-ryu Ongaku Choichi Kai USA

Master Grant Murata is the founder, President and Artistic Director of Ryukyu Koten Ongaku Afuso Ryu Gensei Kai, Hawaii Chapter and President of Ryukyu Koten Afuso Ryu Ongaku Kenkyuu Choichi Kai USA. Murata Sensei first studied Ryukyuan (Okinawan) folk music (Minyo) at the age of 12 under Master Henry Masatada Higa of the Higa Masatada Koten Minyo Club. In 1981, he earned his teaching certificate from Higa Sensei and began teaching.Two years later he established the Sansei Minyo Kenkyu Kai. Continuing his uta-sanshin training, in 1984 he furthered his knowledge of Okinawan classical music (Koten) under Japan's National Treasure, Grand Master Choichi Terukina Sensei. By 1994, he established the Ryukyu Koten Afuso Ryu Gensei Kai Hawaii Shibu, and in 2007, Murata Sensei achieved the highest level of teaching certification, Shihan or master instructor.

OIST Foundation First Year Anniversary Gala 09 DR. SACHIKO KUNO Founder, Halcyon Incubator

Dr. Sachiko Kuno is the founder and visionary creative behind Halcyon and its mission to catalyze and nurture emerging creatives striving for a better world. Driven by Dr. Kuno’s vision, Halcyon’s family of innovative programs, including the acclaimed Halcyon Incubator, is growing rapidly to include Halcyon Stage, a pioneering creatives series of performances and conversations; Halcyon Arts Lab, a residency based studio arts program, and Halcyon Dialogue, a series of high-level discussions among global experts focusing on major topics including implications of robots for global society and social impact-based sciences.

Dr. Kuno also serves as CEO of S&R Foundation, an organization she co-founded in 2000 to support talented individuals with great potential and high aspirations in the arts, sciences, and social entrepreneurship, especially those who are furthering international cultural collaboration.

In 2016, Dr. Kuno co-founded WE Capital, a female-led investment fund in Washington, D.C. An impact investment group, WE Capital invests in female leadership while promoting social impact and financial returns. She is also a founding member of the Greater Washington Partnership, a group of civic-minded business leaders committed to improving the greater Washington region.

MASTER KENTON ODO Shihan (Master Instructor), Ryukyu Koten Afuso-ryu Ongaku Choichi Kai USA

Master Kenton Odo started his uta-sanshin journey in college with a desire to learn about his Okinawan background. Being a fourth generation Japanese (father's side) - Okinawan (mother's side) American, he only identified himself as a Japanese American in his formulative years. Curiosity about his Okinawan roots only intensified when Odo Sensei was given his grandfather's sanshin after his first lesson with Master Grant Murata Sensei. Uta-sanshin became a means for Odo Sensei to discover his roots and learn about the Okinawan culture. In March 1993, Odo Sensei was the recipient of the Okinawa Prefectural Scholarship and studied at the Okinawa Prefectural University of Fine Arts.

DR. AMY SHEN Professor, Micro/Bio/Nanofluidics Unit, OIST

Dr. Amy Shen is a Professor in the Micro/Bio/Nanofluidics Unit at OIST. Previously she was Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Washington and an Affiliate Associate Professor, Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center (DERC), University of Washington. She has received numerous awards for her research and teaching including the OIST Excellence in Mentoring Award, OIST, 2020; a Fulbright Scholar Award; the National Science Foundation CAREER AWARD, and she was the Annual Bergveld Lecturer, University of Twente in 2019, and received the Best paper award, Particle Technology Forum, AICHE meeting, 2008. She is an Associate Editor of Soft Matter, on the Editorial Boards of Biomedical Microdevices, Micromachines, VIEW, Physics of Fluids, and ACS Biosensors.

OIST Foundation First Year Anniversary Gala 10 DR. CARLA J. SHATZ Sapp Family Provostial Professor The Catherine Holman Johnson Director of Stanford Bio-X Professor of Biology and Neurobiology Stanford University

Dr. Shatz’s research aims to understand how early developing brain circuits are transformed into adult connections during critical periods of development. Her work, which focuses on the development of the mammalian visual system, has relevance not only for treating disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, but also for understanding how the nervous and immune systems interact.

In 1978, Dr. Shatz moved to Stanford University, where she attained the rank of Professor of Neurobiology in 1989. In 1992 she moved her laboratory to the University of California, Berkeley, where she was Professor of Neurobiology and an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. From 2000-2007 she was Chair of the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School and the Nathan Marsh Pusey Professor of Neurobiology.

Dr. Shatz has received many awards including the Gill Prize in Neuroscience in 2006. In 1992, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, in 1995 to the National Academy of Sciences, in 1997 to the American Philosophical Society, in 1999 to the Institute of Medicine, and in 2011 she was elected as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society of London. Dr. Shatz was awarded the Gerard Prize in Neuroscience from the 40,000 member Society for Neuroscience, and in 2015, the Gruber Prize in Neuroscience. In 2016, she was the recipient of the Champalimaud Vision Prize and the Kavli Prize in Neuroscience for the discovery of mechanisms that allow experience and neural activity to remodel brain circuits. In 2018 she received the Harvey Prize in Science and Technology.

DR. NANCY SNOW Pax Mundi (“Distinguished”) Professor of Public Diplomacy at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies

Dr. Snow is is also Emeritus Professor of Communications from Cal State Fullerton, a two-time Fulbright (Germany, Japan) and Abe Fellow (Keio University). The daughter of an electrical engineer (Rice/MIT), Snow has been dedicated to the OIST mission ever since she visited the campus in 2015. She is the author of the JAPAN TIMES article, “Japan’s Future is an OISTer.”

MS. MIKU SUGAMA High School Student, Miyako-jima, Okinawa

Ms. Sugama was a participant in the OIST mentoring program, which has inspired her to deepen her interest in science and pursue scientific studies in college. She flew regularly from Miyako to OIST in order to gain this experience.

OIST Foundation First Year Anniversary Gala 11 AMBASSADOR SHINSUKE J. SUGIYAMA Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the United States

Ambassador Sugiyama’s diplomatic career with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) spans over 40 years. He most recently served as Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs. Previous positions include Deputy Director-General of the Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau as well as the International Cooperation Bureau; Director-General for Global Issues, including Ambassador for Climate Change; and Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau. His overseas assignments have included multiple positions at the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C.; Political Minister at the Embassy of Japan in Korea; and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in Egypt.

DR. MISAKI TAKABAYASHI Vice Dean, Graduate School, OIST

Professor Takabayashi is a coral reef molecular ecologist who serves as Vice Dean of the OIST Graduate School. Dr. Takabayashi was previously with the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo marine science department and also served as Interim Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. At OIST, Dr. Takabayahsi oversees many aspects of the University’s outreach efforts to K-12 schools and students.

MR. TOMOYUKI UEHARA President, Okinawa Kenjin Club of Washington State

Mr. Tomoyuki Uehara grew up in Okinawa and attended Okinawa International University. He is currently a Financial Services Professional with New York Life and resides in Washington State. He serves as President of the Okinawa Kenjin Club of Washington State and is an Advisor to the OIST Foundation.

MR. TAKESHI UESHIMA Chair, OIST Foundation

Mr. Takeshi Ueshima is a Principal of Heritage Fund Management, LLC, in New York which specializes in alternative investments for institutional Investors and high net worth individuals. In addition, Mr. Ueshima has served as a member of the International Committee of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a Fellow of UK World Fellowship, a Scott M. Johnson Fellow of the U.S.-Japan Leadership Program, a trustee of Japan ICU Foundation, the treasurer of Tanaka Memorial Foundation, and as a director for various other entities.

Mr. Ueshima holds a B.A. in Economics from Fordham University, where he graduated in 1988. He started his financial career at the Sumitomo Trust & Banking Company Ltd in Tokyo. Mr. Ueshima also worked for UBS (formally Paine Webber, Inc.) in New York.

OIST Foundation First Year Anniversary Gala 12 MS. AMY WEBB Founder, Future Today Institute Professor, NYU Stern School of Business

Amy Webb advises CEOs of the world’s most-admired companies, three-star admirals and generals, and the senior leadership of central banks and intergovernmental organizations. Founder of the Future Today Institute, a leading foresight and strategy firm that helps leaders and their organizations prepare for complex futures, Amy pioneered a data-driven, technology-led foresight methodology that is now used within hundreds of organizations. Forbes called Amy “one of the five women changing the world.” She was honored as one of the BBC’s 100 Women of 2020 and was named to the prestigious Thinkers50 Radar list of the 30 management thinkers most likely to shape the future of how organizations are managed and led.

Webb is a professor of strategic foresight at the NYU Stern School of Business where she developed and teaches the MBA-level strategic foresight course with live case studies. She is a Visiting Fellow at Oxford University’s Säid School of Business, a Nonresident Senior Fellow in the Atlantic Council’s GeoTech Center, a Fellow in the United States-Japan Leadership Program and a Foresight Fellow in the U.S. Government Accountability Office Center for Strategic Foresight. She was elected a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She was a Visiting Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, where her research received a national Sigma Delta Chi award. She was also a Delegate on the former U.S.-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission, where she worked on the future of technology, media and international diplomacy.

She is the author of several popular books, including The Big Nine: How the Tech Titans and Their Thinking Machines Could Warp Humanity, which was longlisted for the Financial Times & McKinsey Business Book of the Year award, shortlisted for the Thinkers50 Digital Thinking Award, won the Gold Axiom Medal and was named Amazon’s best book about technology for 2019.

AMBASSADOR KANJI YAMANOUCHI Ambassador and Consul General of Japan in New York

As Ambassador and Consul General of Japan in New York, Ambassador Yamanouchi serves as a bridge in U.S.-Japan relations. He brings with him years of experience, ranging from his most recent position as Assistant Minister/Director-General for the Economic Affairs Bureau at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to his initial post at the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C. in 1997. In the decades between, he served at MOFA as Director of the First Southeast Asia Division and the First North American Division in 2007. This was followed by his work as Executive Assistant to two Prime Ministers and as Deputy Director General for the Asian Affairs Bureau. In 2013 he returned to Washington, D.C. as Minister for Economic Affairs.
