ALASKAN PENINSULA BASED HUNTS David River Bear Camp, Cold Bay, AK

How to get there How do I get to David River Camp? (Spring/Fall Brown Bear and Caribou) After arriving in Anchorage, you will most likely spend the night in town and then be flown down the Peninsula the following morning. You will need to head to Merrill Field Airport on the North end of Anchorage and take a Lake Clark Air charter flight to Nelson Lagoon. Once in Nelson Lagoon you will then be driven 18 miles down the Bering Sea beach to our camp.

Recommended Brown Bear Hunting Weapons & Rifles: your rifle should be equipped with a weatherproof Caliber 100 yards. Synthetic stocks and Stainless Steel barrels and actions perform best in the inclement weather. If you hand load, be sure all your ammo will chamber and eject properly. Practice as much as possible in all shooting positions. Silhouettes are especially good practice. Be sure scope mounts and all screws are checked for tightness. A good sling is worth its weight in gold.

Spring Brown Bear guide concessions. This is one of the very best areas for trophy Brown Bear in the world. Hunting They hunt these big brown bears by the spot and stalk method as they emerge from the den. In the spring, their coats are thick with winter hair. It is common to watch big males following sows for breeding. There may be time and opportunity to pursue other game in this remote wilderness region. Wolves are prevalent in the area. There is often a good run of Steelhead Trout.

Travel- From Anchorage, you have several options to get to our camp. information We prefer Lake Clark Air. This flight can be split with other David River clients. Another option is to charter a Navajo from Anchorage to Nelson Lagoon. You will need to pre-arrange this charter with Precision Air. He will meet you in Anchorage and fly you to Nelson Lagoon. This flight also can be split between 5 passengers. A Mountain Monarchs representative will meet you there and bring you to David River. If you choose to fly into Cold Bay and the weather is not flyable for a charter to David River, accommodation options are: Cold Bay Lodge or Bearfoot Inn

It is strongly recommended that you purchase a changeable airline ticket, as the weather is unpredictable on the Alaska Peninsula.

Accommodation Base Camp Enjoy comfortable heated cabins situated around the kitchen and dining facilities. Share camaraderie while feasting on home cooked meals. Power and hot showers are available at the beginning and end of the hunt - all within a 35 minute flight of your spike camp in prime Brown Bear country. While base camp is very comfortable, it is not a lodge. Spike Camps Established campsites are in key positions that have been proven over the past 40 years. Each camp consists of 2 tents 2 Sturdy Expedition Grade Tents: 1 for cooking and relaxing and 1 for sleeping and gear storage cots, pads, warm sleeping bags, tables, chairs, lanterns, heaters and lots of good food along with a skilled and personable guide. TROPHY SHIPPING: Mountain Monarchs will prepare your trophy(s) for travel. Unless otherwise arranged, Mountain Monarchs will help to organize shipping of your trophy(s) out of Alaska. An expediter will handle your trophy(s) from Anchorage to the taxidermist/tannery of your choice. The hide and skull must be sealed by an ADF&G Representative either at base camp or before it is shipped out of Alaska. All shipping is billed from David River to Anchorage at r to departing David River. It is expected that any surcharges that Mountain Monarchs receives from fuel vendors and shippers will be reimbursed by clients.

NOTE: all international clients will require a CITES permit for Brown Bear. It is recommended you have your hide tanned in the USA and then shipped to your home country.

Fall The hunt will be in Alaska's Cold Bay and Izembek Refuge area, where we have two Brown Bear exclusive guide concessions. This is one of the very best areas for trophy Brown Bear in the Hunting world. They hunt these big brown bears by the spot and stalk method along salmon choked rivers. As the bears leave the salmon streams, they hunt higher in the prime berry areas and below denning areas as the voracious bruins prepare for a long winter. Wolf and wolverine are present in the area and will often respond to a predator call.

Travel- From Anchorage, you have several options to get to Cold Bay. information We prefer Lake Clark Air. This flight can be split with other David River clients. Another option is to charter a Navajo from Anchorage to Nelson Lagoon. Licenses & You must purchase a hunting license and a Brown Bear tag. You can do that online with the Tags Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Wolves are also prevalent in the area. It is no longer required to purchase a wolf tag in GMU 9D. If time allows during your hunt you may get the opportunity to fish in the Alaska wilderness. There is no guarantee that there will be time to fish on your trip. However, if you hope to fish, a fishing license is required. In addition to a Hunting License and Brown Bear tag, a Registration Bear Permit is required. It is free and they are guaranteed.

Licenses /Tags/ Registration Bear Permit RB 368 / no fee but mandatory! Contact us directly well before your hunt for the ADF&G designated permit numbers. They are available over the internet.

Note: It is recommended you purchase a metal locking tag for wolverine. This is in addition to your Brown Bear tag and Hunting License. A fishing license is optional. Time does not always allow for fishing, bird or waterfowl shooting.

Fall Our Alaskan Peninsula Caribou hunts are operated out of our Legendary Brown Bear camp, Caribou Hunting David River Camp approximately 20 miles SW of Nelson Lagoon. Once arriving at David River Camp on the Bering Sea, you will be flown out to a spike camp location with your guide onto one of our two Federal Guide Concessions where bands of caribou have been located. Although the Lower Alaskan Peninsula Herd is not a migrating herd and is smaller than some other herds in the state, they are well known for their great genetics and the potential for a Boone and Crocket animal. Wolves and wolverine are also available to hunt during this time. Ptarmigan and waterfowl hunting is also open during this time of year and are fun to chase once you are successful with your caribou, if time allows.

How Do I Get to Bettles? (Sheep, Grizzly, Moose, Caribou) After arriving into Fairbanks, AK, you will go the "East Ramp" at Fairbanks International and catch a Wright Air Service flight up to Bettles. Wright Air services Bettles twice a day, except Sundays, with Cessna Caravans. A Mountain Monarchs representative will meet you at the airport in Bettles upon your arrival. Often times you may spend the night in Fairbanks and then catch a morning flight on Wright Air.

Accommodation options in Fairbanks include: Pikes Landing Hotel: restaurant/bar/airport shuttle La Quinta Inn: restaurant/airport shuttle Sophie Station Hotel: restaurant/bar/airport shuttle **Arrive at Base Camp 2 days prior to start of hunt (allow for weather) It is strongly recommended that you purchase a changeable airline ticket. Arctic weather is highly unpredictable at this time of year.

Recommended and Moose Hunting Weapons & Rifle: Caliber We highly recommend the heavier belted magnum calibers in a bolt action with a minimum bullet weight of 220 grains. The .300 Winchester Mag, .338 Winchester Mag, .375 H&H Mag or the .416 Remington Mag are all well suited for our type of shooting situations. Be sure and remove grease and oil from your action and bolt assembly!!! Check all screws for tightness. If you handload check to be sure all cartridges will chamber and eject properly.

Dall Sheep Hunting Rifle: Your rifle should be a lightweight bolt action, scoped with good quality optics and dialed in 2 inches high at 100yards. You should be adept at hitting targets out to 350 yards. If you hand load, be sure all your ammo will chamber and eject properly. Practice as much as possible in all shooting positions. Silhouettes are especially good practice. Be sure scope mounts and all screws are checked for tightness. A good sling is worth its weight in gold. Recommended Caliber: On Dall Sheep, we recommend .270 or larger calibers, with the flat shooting characteristics of the .30 caliber magnums being the most commonly used. Examples: .270 Win; .280 Rem; 7mm Mag; .300 WSM; .300 Win. Mag.; .300 RUM.

Grizzly Bear or They hunt moose and grizzly bears in the Central Brooks Range, an extremely remote and Moose unspoiled part of Alaska. They have Hunting: hunters are guided one on one and there are typically between two and four hunters in the field at any time. The only other hunters you can expect to see are those who may be sharing camp.

Mountain Monarchs usually only guides a handful of moose and grizzly hunters each fall, allowing us to concentrate on each individual hunter. I am an experienced guide, pilot and outfitter and a veteran of 38 Alaskan Seasons. At Mountain Monarchs, we have assembled a great team of guides and we would love to take you hunting.

Accommodation T Accommodations are basic but comfortable with plenty of good hot food. Transportation out in the field is done by ski plane, snowmobile and snowshoes. All hunts are fair chase and strictly legal.

Caribou Upon reaching Bettles, Mountain Monarchs Northern base, you will prioritize your gear Hunting and provisions while being acquainted with your guide. If time allows, we will try to get you out to camp that day. In most cases, you will overnight in Bettles after completing the necessary paperwork and checking the zero of your rifle. The following morning, weather permitting, we will fly you to your spike camp on the North Slope in prime Barren Ground Caribou country. This is an excellent hunt and conducted two hunters to one guide; The area is open country and hunted by the spot and stalk method. On some hunts, we may float an Arctic river to a different pick up point from where we started. Grizzlies and Wolves share this vast land with the roaming Caribou making it a very exciting hunt in beautiful wild country. One Caribou bull may be harvested. These hunts are based on 7 actual hunting days. Walking across tundra is strenuous and we highly recommend training and showing up in good physical condition. Your success depends on your own physical ability.

Air Charter The Air Charter out to spike camp or the rendezvous point is included in the hunt price and is conducted by Brooks Range Aviation. From that, point Mountain Monarchs through our affiliate Outfitting Company may reposition you as needed to get you into the Caribou. On the return, Mountain Monarchs will assist in getting your Caribou and gear back to Bettles in conjunction with BRA. Baggage weight is critical. Therefore, we recommend keeping your daypack, duffle and rifle at or below 60 lbs.

Please Note: All prices quoted include one trip in by DeHavilland Beaver floatplane and your return trip back to Bettles. In the event MMOA is not able to assist in the return flight and a second aircraft is required due to excess weight, we reserve the right to pass this expense on to the client (s). Brooks Range Aviation in this case should be paid directly. They accept Visa/ Master Card as well as Discover Card. Cash is also accepted. No checks.

Accommodation North Slope Caribou Camps: Spike camps are placed via Floatplane at established lake based upon the current movements of the Caribou. Either a float trip will ensue to a predetermined pickup location or you will hunt right from the lake you were dropped off at. Camps usually consist of 2 sturdy expedition grade shelters: 1 for cooking and lounging in and 1 for sleeping in. Along with a heat source, good hot food, and a personable guide, we provide cots, sleeping pads, and sleeping bags to make it one of the most comfortable True Alaskan hunts. Satellite phones are in each camp and each guide checks into base camp each day.

Overnight in Fairbanks before boarding Wright Air Service to Bettles Field. Wright Air Service is located on the East Ramp of Fairbanks International Airport. Shuttle and cab drivers are familiar with Wright Air Service. Upon reaching Bettles, a Mountain Monarchs of Alaska representative will meet your flight and assist you to board a bush plane to fly to base camp. Note: This sheep hunt is extremely strenuous, in order to be successful, you are advised to train and arrive in top physical condition. Note: Plan to be in Bettles two days prior to your hunt start.

Accommodation Base Camp: From Bettles you will be flown out to a base camp in close proximity to where trophy rams have been located. There we will set up a camp consisting of either wall tents or bomb shelter style tents. Home cooked meals around or over the campfire in the old traditional way. Heat, tables, chairs, plenty of food, and enough creature comforts to enjoy without losing the feel of being in the mountains. Good grayling fishing and gold panning is usually available near camp.

Spike Camps: We utilize lightweight expedition grade backpack tents. You will share, in most cases, this tent with your guide. Spike camps consist of jet boil or similar backpack stoves; freeze- dried food, sleeping bags and pads, your rifle and basic personal gear. You will need either a frame pack; or large internal frame pack; or make prior arrangements with us to hire a packer. Packer cost is USD 350 per day.

Trophy Care Sheep capes are professionally skinned, fleshed, salted and frozen in Bettles. Al Barrette of Fairbanks Tannery will assist you in the sealing, tanning and shipping of your sheep to a taxidermist of your choice. Call ahead.

Baggage: Your baggage should be packed in small soft duffle bags. If you wish to travel to Bettles with a suitcase or large duffle bag, please bring small duffle bags to repack your gear before it is loaded into the hi-performance Super Cubs we utilize in the mountains. Large duffle bags and suitcases will remain at o mail your clothes and boots to Bettles prior to the start of your hunt; allow at least three weeks.

The scheduled village flights generally charge USD 1.80+ per lb. for anything over 40 lbs.
