Personal Injury Insurance

The club holds Personal Injury Insurance with JLT Sport through our affiliation with Worksafe Victorian Country Football League. Personal Injury Insurance provides coverage for injuries sustained whilst participating in an activity under the following circumstances: • An official match or training session. • Travelling to or from an official club activity. • Participating in an official club function. • Tours or representative matches. What is generally covered: What is generally not covered: D Physiotherapy x Doctor’s Fees D Chiropractic x Surgeon’s Fees D Dental x Anaesthetist’ Fees D Non Medicare MRIs. x X-Rays D Ambulance x Public Hospital Costs D Private Hospital x MRI Scans (Medicare Claim) Accommodation

In addition to the level of insurance cover that is automatically supplied through our registration, the club has undertaken to increase this cover to the higher "Gold" level which provides for a 90% rebate with a $50 excess. The automatic coverage provides for an amount of $250,000 if a player is made quadriplegic or paraplegic through a football injury. The club has now increased this level to $1,000,000.

These upgrades give our players the best possible protection against serious injury and although quite a costly exercise, they have been done in the interests of player welfare. This coverage applies to all senior and junior teams.

As you can see the big ticket items are not covered therefore the club’s committee urges every player to take out private health cover. Fit – Health Insurance (underwritten by GMHBA) has some excellent Hospital + Extras packages which are designed for sporting people. Remember, these packages cover you 24/7 for the entire year, not just football participation only. Dale Hunt is the club insurance manager so if you need to make a claim on JLT Personal Injury Insurance or you wish to sign up with Fit - Health Insurance for a complete 24/7 Hospital + Extras package please contact Dale. Dale Hunt – Mobile: 0498 483 817, email: [email protected] We also advise players to consider personal injury protection cover. Club Sponsor Davidson’s can offer free information and a PERSONAL quote from Graeme Crofts on 0419 209 194 or 5244 6864. 3 South Barwon Football & Netball Club Member’s Handbook

Social Awareness

Our club has identified the importance of major life issues away from football and netball. Led by David Barnes (club vice president) and aided by our Chaplin Alistair Maddock, the club has developed a program aimed at our junior age groups, (boys) under 16 and 18 and (girls) under 15 and 17.

Program Opportunities included. 1. Development of individual leadership traits. 2. Awareness of drugs and alcohol issues--- Responsible Serving of Alcohol. Approximately 100 of our young players (girls and boys) have completed the course over the past two years at no cost to themselves. 3. Awareness of mental health issues----Read the Play Program and Beyond Blue’s Look/Listen/Learn program. 4. Looking after Mates program. Exposure to local and community network. 5. Racial and Religious Tolerance Policy – accept people as they are (refer to appendices at the back of this book) 6. An address to the junior section footballers on the meaning and importance of ANZAC Day commemoration by Vietnam Veterans.

In recognition of the club’s efforts in addressing these issues we received an award in 2009 for the Most Outstanding Recreation Club and Well Being. The award was presented by the Barwon Region Mental Health Week Committee in conjunction with the Kardinia Rotary Club.

Football and netball clubs are so much more than just playing football and netball these days. As a club we will strive to continue the development work that David and Alistair commenced this year, with an aim to make our players better people in our community.

Please contact Alister Maddock on 0439 353 104 should you have any personal issues you would like to seek assistance or advice.

Volunteer Management

The volunteers range from all the people who act as team managers, coaches, scoreboard attendants, ground preparation, line marking facility maintenance, preparing meals to a host of tasks that can be onerous, difficult, time consuming and when done well are rarely noticed. The club recognises its volunteers by providing a volunteers’ evening at the commencement of each season and we could not operate without them. Our heartfelt thanks to all of you.

We can never have too many volunteers to the dozens of tasks required for football and netball operations, facilities management, canteen assistance etc and any additional help is always greatly appreciated.

If you have a suggested or want to involved at any level at our great club please have a chat to any Committee member at any time.

CLUB MISSION STATEMENT - PURPOSE Our Vision

The South Barwon FNC will be acknowledged throughout the GFL and its local region as a celebrated leader in community-based sporting organizations.

Our key aims 2011 - 2016 • Provide a friendly and safe environment for the participation and promotion of the games of Australian Rules football and netball. • Promote positive and proactive behaviours • Strong and healthy financial processes, • To field competitive teams in all club sections. • Club success through the participation of our community • Player development through the establishment of meaningful pathways – social, sporting and vocational – from junior to senior football and beyond. • Strategic partnerships • Maintain a Junior Development Program where as many young people as possible are given the opportunity to develop their skills in football and netball. • Improve club facilities and ongoing improvement to the physical environment at McDonald Reserve, Belmont..

To achieve our purpose, we will: • Encourage each player and develop their individual abilities to the highest level; • Utilise a player development ‘pathway’ that ensures integrity and fairness; • Supply the best possible resources and facilities; • Play a major role in the project management of the new clubrooms • Develop a Funding & Implementation Plan for the installation of all other facilities required to operate on both ovals. • Provide the most professional and dedicated team of coaches, other strategists and players who will ensure all performances of every team are at their peak every week; • Undertake to grow the number of young players in the club; • Elevate the sense of unity and purpose of the club

Club Structure

Club Capability

Key Strategies • Develop and implement a strategic planning, and reporting, process for use by all sections that enables South Barwon FNC to monitor club capability and identify opportunities to provide relevant financial or in kind support

Codes of Conduct

The Codes of Behavior (including off field and on field behaviors) will provide the basis for a welcoming and safe environment. The Club will ensure that they will be endorsed and adopted by all. Codes of Conduct the SBFNC abides by and endorses through AFL Barwon and Sport and Recreation Victoria.

These issues are outlined in the following links to Sport & Rec Victoria: http://www.dtpli.vic.gov.au/sport-and-recreation/make-sport-fair-and-drug-free/victorian-code-of- conduct-for-community-sport http://www.dtpli.vic.gov.au/sport-and-recreation/make-sport-fair-and-drug-free/victorian-code-of- conduct-for-community-sport/overview-of-the-code

CLUBROOMS and FACILITIES

The SBF&NC acknowledges the support of the Commonwealth Government of Australia and the State Government of Victoria as well as the City of Greater Geelong in the realisation of our clubroom extension project. We also acknowledge similar support in the kitchen and lighting upgrades completed for the 2014 season.

In support of this major development of our facilities we ask that all members respect our new facilities and work towards maintaining them for future generations of South Barwon players and members.

Resources & Facilities Development

Following on from our previous year's clubrooms extension project we embarked in the preseason on the long awaited kitchen upgrade. With only a small window of opportunity between mid March and mid April we were able to demolish the old kitchen and then install a modern state of the art commercial kitchen that will hopefully serve our club, and the Highton Cricket Club, for many years into the future. Once again this club is indebted to the City of Greater Geelong for providing a cash grant and regulatory guidance to enable the facility to be completed without too many hitches. We also thank a group of tradesmen within the club together with some other willing helpers who assisted with the project.

A further off field achievement this year was the replacement of a condemned light tower in the north west corner of the top oval. It is our intention to replace the remaining three wooden towers during 2015. A commitment from both major political parties to provide funding for this project will see work commence in late 2015.

The City of Greater Geelong has also been active the past few weeks installing a new drainage system on the bottom oval. This ground was badly affected by wet weather during the football season.

The club has a policy of continuous improvement to the facilities at McDonald's Reserve and it is our intention to undertake, in the near future, terracing work above the bottom oval to provide for enhanced spectator comfort. An electronic scoreboard for the top oval is also on the radar as a future capital improvement.

SMOKING POLICY

Please observe the clubroom and McDonald Reserve precinct smoking policy. This policy supported by all levels of government can be viewed in two sections; - Under age sports participation - General amenity smoking

Under age sports participation

Under new smoking regulations (5RI (1) of the Tobacco Act 1987) smoking is banned within 10 metres (two car lengths) of any sporting playing surface and club facility during under age sporting activities.

To simplify Colts matches are regarded as under age by the Club and the ban relates to training, playing and other junior activities. Effectively this means that SMOKING IS NOT PERMITTED in the McDonald Reserve precinct during ANY junior sport. This includes netball and football surfaces and rooms and the playground.

For example;

General amenity smoking

Smoking is also banned in under cover areas, within 5 metres of an entry/exit door, and 5 metres of a canteen or food selling area. This means that smoking IS NOT PERMITTED in front of the FULL LENGTH of the clubrooms and coaching boxes and interchange areas.

Designated Smoking area

In discussion with Council and independent sporting assembly the Committee has commissioned a Designated Smoking Area which will be behind the senior coach’s box facing the second ground. This area can only be used outside junior participation hours.

Please observe the signage and smoking regulations and any queries can be addressed to David Barnes. For further information go to; http://www.health.vic.gov.au/tobaccoreforms/smoke-free- children-rec-areas/index.htm 13 South Barwon Football & Netball Club Member’s Handbook
