    LARKMEAD VINEYARDS: SINGLE SITE, MULTIPLE TERROIRS ELIN MC COY, DECANTER, AUGUST 5, 2019 Napa Valley had a rich wine history long before Prohibition, and three of the most celebrated wineries from that bygone era – Inglenook, Beaulieu Vineyards and Beringer – are still famous today. Family-owned Larkmead in Calistoga is a fourth, founded 125 years ago, but, jokes winemaker Dan Petroski, ‘It’s the one you’ve never heard of.’ Larkmead’s modern story began about 20 years ago, and it’s now making some of Napa’s top Cabernets and getting some serious recognition. So when Petroski invited me to a vertical tasting of six vintages of The Lark – the winery’s top Cabernet – that he was staging for collectors before the big-spend Napa wine auction, I emailed back: ‘Yes!’ On the warm summer day, bees were buzzing in the garden around the porch of the sleek, chic white farmhouse and winery designed by architect Howard Backen. The setting is idyllic: you look out on vineyards that stretch across the valley floor from Highway 29 on the west nearly to Silverado Trail on the east. ‘The soils,’ says Petroski, ‘are very diverse. They’re like a snapshot of the whole Napa Valley.’ Before the official tasting, he lined up three early vintages of The Lark and a couple of bottles of Solari, a Cabernet made from the estate’s oldest vines, for me to sample in the bright and airy farmhouse.     Decanter World Wine Awards 2018 – Results Press Release – United States Cabernet Sauvignon sweeps the board, winning over half of the United States’ top medals in the world’s largest wine competition The 2018 results of the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), the world’s largest wine competition, have been released, underlining the continuing increase in diversity offered to consumers, with more than 60 countries submitting wines. The 15th edition of the Decanter World Wine Awards received nearly 17,000 entries, with a marked increase in wines coming from emerging markets in Central Europe such as Bulgaria, Moldova and Serbia, as well as Central Asian countries such as Armenia and Kazakhstan. Over the course of an intense week at London’s CentrEd at ExCeL, 275 judges from 33 countries assessed the entries, eventually awarding just 50 wines (0.3% of entries) the ultimate accolade of Best in Show, 149 wines (0.88% of entries) a Platinum medal and 439 wines (2.60% of entries) a Gold medal. A combined total of just over 10,500 further wines were awarded Silver or Bronze medals. Californian Cabernet Sauvignon dominated the United States’ results in the 2018 Decanter World Wine Awards, winning 6 of the country’s top medals in the world’s largest wine competition, including the top Best in Show honor for Newton Vineyard’s “pristine, pure and head-turning” Cabernet Sauvignon from Yountville. One Platinum medal was awarded to the Scatters Peaks Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, and among the Gold medal winners were 2 Newton Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons, one from Mount Veeder and one from Spring Mountain District.

In the contemporary fine and rare wine market, wine fraud is a serious concern. The past several decades witnessed significant events of fine wine forgery, including the infamous Jefferson bottles and the more recent large-scale counterfeit operation orchestrated by Rudy Kurniawan.     LUCZY: 2011 CALIFORNIA CABERNET – 10 YEARS ON MAT THEW LUCZY, DECANTER, FEBRUARY 19, 2021 The 2011 Cabernet vintage in California has always been seen as one for European palates, thanks to the atypically cool, wet conditions. US drinkers may have dismissed this outlier vintage as subpar at the time, but a decade on Matthew Luczy discovers just how well these fresh and elegant wines have aged. Vintages are often placed on a continuum, with ‘good’ and ‘bad’ at either end. This binary framing necessitates an all-too-often unasked question: good or bad for what? Good for drinking tonight or good to drink in 30 years? Bad for being different than the norm or showing an alternate viewpoint? Some harvests produce wines built for decades of cellaring, others better suited for earlier consumption. As such, it should not be only the results of ripe, pristine vintages that deserve to be looked at fondly. Each year makes wines with different strengths, weaknesses and applications. The quality of a wine is proportional to grape quality, which is partially a reflection of weather conditions. Simultaneously, it all comes down to the winemaker and how they handle what nature gives them. This is where the difference between the competent and the world-class resides. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot account for 60% of the 1,370ha of vineyard, followed by Cabernet Franc, Syrah and the complementary variety Petit Verdot. Bolgheri Superiore is at the pointy end of the production pyramid, representing a rigidly selected 15% of the total annual bottling, alongside which there are also a limited number of IGTs of the ‘SuperTuscan’ ilk. The younger, early-drinking Bolgheri Rosso represents the second wine for most estates. Making a name In August 2019, Bolgheri celebrated the 25th anniversary of the founding of its wine producers’ consorzio. It was an occasion for ‘who are we, where are we coming from, where are we going’ type reflections. Federico Zileri, owner of the Castello di Bolgheri estate and former president of the consorzio, divides the modern history of wine in Bolgheri into three phases. In the beginning was Sassicaia, the wine that Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta originally made for his own family’s consumption, which was to become one of Italy’s truly iconic wines, with an inimitable style and consistency that sets it apart from any general discussion of the wines of Bolgheri.

The vine originated in Greece and was Grape (Vitis) brought to the south of Italy by Greek settlers. The name may be a corruption of vitis hellenica, Latin for "Greek vine."[1] Another etymology posits a corruption of Apulianicum, the Latin name for the whole of southern Italy in the time of ancient Rome. During this period, it was the principal grape of the famous Falernian wine, the Roman equivalent of a first-growth wine today.
