ANNUAL AWARDS

2018

LICQNS.com 1 Thank you to our Annual Sponsors Welcome PREMIERE Dear Members and of the LIC Partnership (LICP), Welcome to our Annual Awards Gala! We are proud to share with you our 2018 Annual Report on LICP and our special Gala Program. For over 30 years, we have celebrated some of the many fine people and institutions that make (LIC) the great community that it is. This year’s honorees—Frank “Turtle” Raffaele of COFFEED and the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy— bring a special dedication to this great community. LIC is a neighborhood unlike any other, with an unparalleled and intertwining mix of sectors, at once enjoying deep roots and PLATINUM achieving new heights. Since 1979, the LICP has been serving this large and important area, helping to facilitate both neighborhood- wide improvements and individual company growth. Today we are doing so in more ways than ever. In the following pages, you can sample what the neighborhood has to offer and what our efforts have accomplished in economic development, supplemental services, marketing and business assistance. This has been an extraordinary year for LIC. We have seen enormous growth in every sector. We were excited to release our Life Sciences Report and have begun to experience the interest of life science companies and investors. The City announced an unprecedented public investment in infrastructure and the launch of a master planning effort for Sunnyside Yard. None of this work is possible without the support of Members, Directors, our Corporate Sponsors, our highly effective Elected Officials, and most of all, the creative and committed people and organizations of LIC. Many of them are recognized throughout this program. Once you engage as an active member of LICP, you will GOLD connect with their great work and the efforts of so many more. Up-to-date information can always be found at our resource- packed website licqns.com. We encourage you to stay in touch by signing up for our e-newsletter, reaching out for business assistance, attending events and becoming a Member. Sincerely,

Elizabeth Lusskin Gary Kesner President Chair

William D. Modell Community Service Awards Hunters Point Parks Conservancy Hunters Point Parks Conservancy, a nonprofit volunteer-run organization, was formed as the “Friends of the Gantry” in 1998 by a group of dedicated Long Island City residents determined to improve the quality of life at the waterfront in Hunters Point, Long Island City. In 2014, the Friends of the Gantry expanded its mission and evolved into the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy—including the newly opened Hunters Point Park South Park and LIC Landing restaurant and event space. Their parks offer recreational activities including a soccer field, basketball courts, playgrounds and volleyball courts. Its gardens and spaciousness also provide plenty of room for quiet solitude. The Conservancy hosts programs and events including park clean-ups, movies, concerts, fitness activities, community celebrations and more.

Business Honoree Frank “Turtle” Raffaele, COFFEED COFFEED is a City–based, locally-sourced, charity-minded café and specialty coffee company. Its mission is to provide superior products at competitive prices, while keeping charitable giving at the forefront of all they do. They roast they’re own coffee, bake they’re own pastries, and through their partnership with the Brooklyn Grange, source much of their produce from the acre-sized roof of their flagship location in Long Island City, Queens. Each COFFEED location donates a significant percentage (up to 10%) of its gross revenue to worthy local charities. COFFEED currently has three locations in LIC. They are driven to become one of the most charitable companies in the world and one of the most profitable as well. Every location they open is a powerful opportunity to benefit another community, additional charities, and new customers. They want to be known as the best place to get fantastic, locally-sourced meals and superb coffee, and as a result, to support worthy local charities.

Special Service Award in Recognition of his 16 years as Chair of the LICP Board Gary Kesner Gary Kesner is Executive Vice President of Silvercup Studios, one of New York’s largest, full-service film, television and commercial production facilities. Silvercup’s affiliate, Silvertrucks, provides location lighting services in the metropolitan area. Mr. Kesner supervises operations, administrative, legal and financial affairs for the companies. Mr. Kesner is also actively engaged in Silvercup Properties real estate development efforts. Silvercup Properties recently completed The Harrison, a 120 unit residential condominium in Long Island City. Mr. Kesner is the longest serving Chair of the Board of Directors of the Long Island City Partnership. He is also the President of the Board of Directors of the Queens Theatre, a board member of the Long Island City Business Improvement District and a member of the Mt. Sinai Queens Hospital Business Advisory Board. Mr. Kesner previously enjoyed a successful career in the public sector specializing in economic development. He was appointed Commissioner of the Office of Business Development by Mayor Edward I. Koch in 1986 and served in that position until 1990. Mr. Kesner is a Member of the Bar of the State of New York.
