Staten Island was the first borough outside Manhattan to receive these electric trolley cars in the 1920s, and then finally Brooklyn joined the fun in 1930. By 1960, however, motor buses completely replaced New York City public transit trolley cars and trolley buses. The city's first regular elevated railway (el) service began on February 14, 1870. The El ran along Greenwich Street and Ninth Avenue in Manhattan. Elevated train service dominated rapid transit for the next few decades. On September 24, 1883, a Brooklyn Bridge cable-powered railway opened between Park Row in Manhattan and Sands Street in Brooklyn, carrying passengers over the bridge and back.

    THE OFFICE OF THE QUEENS BOROUGH PRESIDENT Strategic Policy Statement 2014 Melinda Katz Queens Borough President The Borough of Queens is home to more than 2.3 million residents, representing more than 120 countries and speaking more than 135 languages1. The seamless knit that ties these distinct cultures and transforms them into shared communities is what defines the character of Queens. The Borough’s diverse population continues to steadily grow. Foreign-born residents now represent 48% of the Borough’s population2. Traditional immigrant gateways like Sunnyside, Woodside, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Corona, and Flushing are now communities with the highest foreign-born population in the entire city3. Immigrant and Intercultural Services The immigrant population remains largely underserved. This is primarily due to linguistic and cultural barriers. Residents with limited English proficiency now represent 28% of the Borough4, indicating a need for a wide range of social service support and language access to City services. All services should be available in multiple languages, and outreach should be improved so that culturally sensitive programming can be made available. The Borough President is actively working with the Queens General Assembly, a working group organized by the Office of the Queens Borough President, to address many of these issues. Cultural Queens is amidst a cultural transformation. The Borough is home to some of the most iconic buildings and structures in the world, including the globally recognized Unisphere and New York State Pavilion. Areas like Astoria and Long Island City are establishing themselves as major cultural hubs.     2016 COMMUNITY HEALTH NEEDS ASSESSMENT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Community Health Needs Assessment, 2016 Update Purpose of the Community Health Needs Assessment This 2016 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) updates the CHNA completed in 2013 to meet the requirements of Section 9007 of the 2010 federal law, The Affordable Care Act (“ACA”). The ACA requires that any tax-exempt, IRS- designated 501(c) (3) hospital complete or update a publicly-available, comprehensive CHNA every three years in order to document the extent to which it understands the unique characteristics and needs of the local communities it serves, and responds to these needs by delivering meaningful and effective community benefit through clinical services and other programming. Required Components A CHNA report has five required components: 1) Definition of community served 2) A prioritized description of the significant health needs of the community 3) Transparency in the process and methods used to conduct the CHNA, including how it took into account input from the community served and prioritized community health needs 4) A description of the resources potentially available to address the identified significant prioritized community health needs 5) An evaluation of the impact of actions taken to address the significant health needs identified in the previous CHNA report (June 2013). A CHNA report is considered complete when it is adopted by a governing body of the facility and made widely available to the public. The works, suspended plate-glass sculptures internally etched with images of clouds, share Isamu Noguchi’s interest in sculpting ephemeral materi- als, and in using them to shape space. when April 25–August 12, 2018 Wednesday–Friday 10 am–5 pm Saturday and Sunday 11 am–6 pm where The Noguchi Museum 9-01 33rd Road (at Vernon Boulevard) Long Island City, NY sculptures Raised in a Buddhist temple by the sea in Okayama, Japan, and on 25-acres of redwood forest in coastal Northern California, Ando has always been drawn to the immaterial quality of fog and clouds. She began creating images of clouds in glass cubes and slabs in 2011. Pushing the limits of commercial laser etching technology from the outset, she started small. By collaborating with a highly specialized factory, she has been able to gradually enlarge them. The two examples for the Museum, the first she has decided to hang— Haku-Un (White Cloud) 4.8.1, the largest to date, and Haku-Un (White Cloud) 3.3.1— take the work in a new, more environmental direction.     Income Inequality in New York City and Philadelphia during the 1860s By Mark Stelzner Abstract In this paper, I present new income tax data for New York City and Philadelphia for the 1860s. Despite limitations, this data offers a glimpse at the income shares of the top 1, 0.1, and 0.01 percent of the population in the two premier US cities during an important period in our economic history – a glimpse previously not possible. As we shall see, the income shares of top one percent in New York City in the 1860s and mid-2000s are comparable. This combined with recent data and our knowledge of US history highlights new questions. Introduction In July 1863, New York City was ravaged by riots which extend for four full days. These riots are most commonly known for their anti-draft and racist elements. However, economic inequality was also a major factor motivating the mob. “Here [the working classes]… have been slaving in abject poverty and living in disgusting squalor all their days, while, right by their side, went up the cold, costly palaces of the rich,” explained the New York Times in October. “The riot was essentially and distinctly a proletaire outbreak,” continued the Times, “such as we have often foreseen – a movement of the abject poor against the well-off and the rich.” 1 In this paper, I present new income tax data for New York City and Philadelphia for 1863 and 1868 and 1864 to 1866, respectively.
